The fastest reliable route is the Blackmire Ancient Spire to the Snapjaw Tar Pits. Fast-travel to the spire, move into the nearby swamp water, kill Snapjaws around the mud and tar pools, loot each body, and repeat the circuit across neighboring pits. Snapjaws are the only enemy that drops Reptile Hide, and each kill normally provides one hide according to the current database reference.
What Reptile Hide is used for
Reptile Hide is a common level-13 crafting material with a stack size of 250. The Official Enshrouded Wiki identifies Snapjaws as its source and lists the material as an ingredient for progression equipment. You need the processed form, Reptile Leather, for several important upgrades rather than for a separate hunting-only objective.

- Pocket Heater: one Reptile Leather, one Metal Sheet, and one Coal produce three Pocket Heaters.
- Ranger armor: several pieces use Reptile Leather.
- Serpent Warrior Pants: the armor set also uses the processed material.
If inventory space is your immediate problem, reserve six leather for the Medium Backpack before spending leather on heaters or armor. For cold exploration, process additional hide after that reservation.
Where Snapjaws spawn
Blackmire Ancient Spire and the Snapjaw Tar Pits
Snapjaws are territorial reptiles that live in Blackmire mud and tar pits. The Official Enshrouded Wiki says they cannot leave those pits, so searching roads, dry clearings, or unrelated swamp edges wastes time. The Snapjaw Tar Pits west of the Blackmire Ancient Spire are described as a common gathering area, and the practical route from the spire leads directly through swamp water to those pools.

An Enshrouded.tools database lists 36 Snapjaw spawn points. Treat that number as a route-planning reference for the database’s 2026 state, not as a guarantee that every point will be occupied in every patch, world state, or difficulty setting.
Why the spire is the best starting point
Fast travel places you close to several pools, reducing the time between clears. The area also gives you a natural circuit: start at the spire, enter the water, check each nearby mud or tar pool, then return toward the first pools. The useful route is defined by four practical factors:

- Whether each pool has firm ground from which to fight and loot.
- How much distance separates one spawn point from the next.
- Whether your base or a Drying Rack is close enough to process hide and Salt without a long detour.
Step-by-step farming route
- Prepare before leaving. Carry enough healing and weapon durability for several encounters. Leave room in your inventory for hides and Salt-related crafting supplies, and identify a solid-ground retreat point before entering deep mud.
- Fast-travel to Blackmire Ancient Spire. This is the recommended reset point because the nearby pools are concentrated around the swamp.
- Move down into the swamp water. Head toward the Snapjaw Tar Pits west of the spire rather than searching the surrounding dry terrain.
- Scan the mud and tar pools. Look for the crocodile-like Snapjaw silhouette and movement in the muck. Their territorial behavior keeps them in this habitat.
- Pull each Snapjaw toward firm ground. Fight at the pool edge whenever possible. A clear retreat line prevents a stun or ambush bite from trapping you in mud.
- Loot immediately after the kill. The current practical database reference lists one Reptile Hide per Snapjaw. Pick up every hide before moving to the next pool.
- Continue across neighboring pools. Follow a consistent clockwise or counterclockwise loop so that you do not repeatedly cross the same water.
- Return to the first pools and check them again. Use repeated clears rather than relying on a promised timer; no reviewed source establishes a universal respawn interval.
This loop is faster in practice than roaming through Blackmire at random because every movement decision is tied to a known Snapjaw habitat.
How to win Snapjaw fights safely
Use the damage types that work best
Enshrouded.tools reports blunt and shock damage at 130% effectiveness against Snapjaws, while cutting and fire are listed at 70%. Those figures are a practical database reference for 2026 and can change with balance patches or difficulty settings. When you have a choice, use a blunt or shock attack to shorten the exposed part of the fight.

Respect the dive and ambush charge
Snapjaws can dive beneath the muck after attacking. While submerged, they cannot be targeted, so wasting attacks into the pool only drains stamina, ammunition, or durability. Wait for the animal to surface and keep your camera pointed toward the pool rather than chasing blindly into deep mud.
The ambush charge can stun, and standing in mud exposes you to an ambush bite. Fight from the bank or another firm patch, then step back when the Snapjaw begins a charge. If it disappears, hold your position on solid ground until it resurfaces instead of entering the pool to force contact.
Loot from the edge
After a kill, approach only far enough to reach the body. The edge of the pit is safer than wading into the center, especially when another Snapjaw is still active. Establishing one retreat point per pool also makes the circuit repeatable when several animals spawn close together.
Respawn expectations and efficient loops
No authoritative source reviewed for this guide publishes a fixed Reptile Hide-per-minute rate or a universally guaranteed Snapjaw respawn timer. Avoid guides that promise an exact number of hides every minute or describe the route as a timer exploit. Your actual yield depends on which spawn points are active, how quickly you kill, travel distance between pools, and the state of your world.

For consistent farming, measure success by completed circuits:
- Clear every visible pool near the spire instead of stopping after the first kill.
- Keep the same route direction each run so you recognize missed pools.
- Use firm ground to reduce deaths and recovery time.
- Fast-travel away and return only when your world state requires a reset; do not assume a specific elapsed time will always repopulate the pits.
- Process hide between longer sessions rather than carrying a full inventory back and forth after every single kill.
The official Snapjaw entry establishes the important constraint: these enemies stay in Blackmire mud and tar pits. That makes a short, repeatable pool-to-pool route more dependable than searching the wider biome.
Turn Reptile Hide into Reptile Leather
Drying Rack recipe
At a Drying Rack, combine one Reptile Hide and three Salt. The official item page lists a 1:00 craft time and an output of three Reptile Leather. This is the complete conversion loop: hunt Snapjaws, collect hide, supply Salt, queue the rack, and then use the leather at the relevant NPC or station.

The Medium Backpack needs six Reptile Leather. Because one drying batch yields three leather, reserve two Reptile Hide and six Salt for the backpack’s leather requirement. Planning heaters
One drying batch creates three leather, enough for three Pocket Heater batches if you have the required Metal Sheets and Coal. Each heater batch produces three heaters, and each individual heater grants +2 Frost Resistance for 30 minutes. If you need several expeditions’ worth of cold protection, farm and dry hide in batches so the rack keeps working while you explore.

Choose the Medium Backpack for permanent capacity
Six Reptile Leather is the stated requirement for the Medium Backpack. It is the best first claim on your early leather when inventory capacity is blocking exploration, gathering, or combat preparation. Farm enough Snapjaws for the two hide batches, keep the Salt reserved, and do not spend that leather on heaters until the backpack is complete.
Choose Pocket Heaters for cold zones
Pocket Heaters are a temporary defensive investment. The recipe consumes one leather, one Metal Sheet, and one Coal for three heaters, and each heater lasts 30 minutes while providing +2 Frost Resistance. They are appropriate when the next objective is cold exposure rather than carrying more loot.
Reserve leather for Ranger and Serpent Warrior gear
Ranger armor pieces and Serpent Warrior Pants are also identified as Reptile Leather uses. Their exact material totals depend on the particular piece and recipe available in your game, so check the recipe screen before allocating the leather you just dried. If a gear upgrade is your immediate progression gate, set that target before converting every hide into heaters.
Fixes for common farming problems
No Snapjaws at the first pool
Check the surrounding mud and tar pools rather than abandoning the area. Snapjaws are confined to these pits, and the database lists multiple spawn points around Blackmire. Follow the complete circuit; one empty pool does not prove that the route is inactive.
The Snapjaw dives and cannot be hit
This is expected behavior. The creature cannot be targeted while submerged. Stop attacking, stay on firm ground, and wait for it to surface before resuming your damage cycle.
You are stunned in the mud
Move the fight to the bank on the next pull. The ambush charge can stun, and the mud removes your safest retreat space. Keep the pool behind the Snapjaw and a clear solid path behind your character.
Hides are not appearing in your inventory
Loot the corpse directly after every kill and inspect the drop list. The Official Enshrouded Wiki identifies Snapjaws as the only Reptile Hide dropper, while the Enshrouded.tools entry lists one hide per kill. If you killed a different swamp creature, it will not supply this material.
The Drying Rack is slowing the whole operation
Stock Salt before a long farming session and queue conversions as soon as you return. Each batch occupies the rack for one minute, so a larger hide haul creates a processing queue even when the hunting loop is efficient. A second nearby rack or a base positioned close to the Blackmire route reduces downtime if your progression allows it.

- Mark firm ground at each pool as your retreat and looting position.
