The trick is using a different input path (like the PlayStation app/Remote Play) or switching the console into Safe Mode.
This guide covers 3 easy methods to factory reset a PS5 without controller—each with prerequisites, exact button/keyboard actions, and troubleshooting when something doesn’t detect.
Factory reset wipes local data and can reinstall or reset the system depending on the option you choose. Read the comparison table before you commit.
Why factory resetting a PS5 matters (and what it deletes)
A factory reset puts your PS5 back into a fresh system state. Depending on the option you run, it can remove installed games, reset settings, and in deeper modes reinstall system software.

- Media playback controls - Quickly navigate media with built-in play/pause, fast forward and fast reverse buttons.
- Seamless console compatibility - Power on your PS5 console and navigate its menus directly with the remote for ultimate convenience.
- TV settings - Adjust the volume and power settings of compatible TVs with the built-in IR transmitter. PS5 system software update may be required.
Most importantly: only cloud saves survive if you have PlayStation Plus cloud sync enabled. Anything local (downloads, settings, and game installations) will be erased from the console storage.
Before you start: prerequisites and expectations
- Account access: You’ll need the same PlayStation Network (PSN) sign-in after reset.
- Network: Remote Play requires a working Wi‑Fi connection. Safe Mode options may require network only for some flows.
- Backup reality check: Confirm saves are backed up (cloud) or copied (USB) if you care about them.
- Time: System software reinstall can take 15–60+ minutes depending on internet speed and storage.
- Input support: For controller-free Safe Mode, a USB keyboard is your best bet. The PlayStation app approach uses your phone.
Method 1: Factory reset using the PlayStation app (Remote Play) without a DualSense
This is the most straightforward controller-free option when your PS5 is already on (or at least can be reached). The PlayStation app can act like a controller through Remote Play, letting you reach the reset settings.
What you need
- A smartphone with the PlayStation app installed (iOS or Android)
- Same PSN account on the phone and PS5
- PS5 connected to the internet
- A phone with stable Wi‑Fi (or strong mobile data if your Remote Play setup supports it)
Step-by-step
- Sign in to the PlayStation app using your PSN account.
- Open the app and go to Remote Play.
- Pair/connect to your PS5 (if prompted, confirm access on the console screen).
- Once you see your PS5 screen on your phone, open Settings on the PS5 UI via Remote Play controls.
- Navigate to System > Reset Options.
- Select Reset PS5.
- Choose the option that matches your goal (for a true wipe, use the option that resets the PS5 system to default and removes user data stored on the console).
- Confirm the reset and wait for the reboot.
Depending on your system software version, labels may be slightly different, but the path is typically Settings > System > Reset Options.
When this method won’t work
- Your PS5 won’t boot far enough to reach Settings.
- Your phone can’t connect to Remote Play due to network restrictions (NAT/ports) or account setup issues.
- You can connect, but the on-screen controls don’t respond reliably.
If you hit any of those, switch to Safe Mode methods.

Safe Mode is the controller-free reset route when the PS5 is stuck, you can’t navigate menus, or you don’t have a DualSense available. A USB keyboard can provide enough input to select the reset option.

What this does
It triggers system recovery and then runs a reset that clears data and restores system state. In many cases, you’ll still be asked to reinstall system software (especially for the stronger reset option).
What you need
- A USB keyboard (USB-A to PS5’s USB port works for most setups)
- A USB keyboard connected to the PS5 during Safe Mode
- Basic patience: keyboard selection behavior can vary slightly
Step-by-step
- Power off your PS5 completely. Hold the power button until it turns off (no rest mode).
- Plug your USB keyboard into a USB port on the PS5.
- Press and hold the power button again.
- Release after you hear a second beep (this indicates Safe Mode).
- You should land on the Safe Mode menu. Use the keyboard to move/select options. If arrow navigation doesn’t work, try
Tabto shift focus andEnterto confirm. - Select Reset PS5 (wording may match “Reset PS5” or a similar label).
- Confirm the warning prompts.
- Wait for the console to reboot and complete the reset.
If your keyboard is detected, you can complete this without a controller. If it isn’t detected, jump to Method 3 (offline reinstall), which is more deterministic.
Gotchas if the keyboard doesn’t respond
- Wrong USB port: Try a different USB port (prefer USB ports on the front). Some setups behave differently in Safe Mode.
- Keyboard type: Some gaming/keyboards with special drivers may fail to initialize. A basic USB-A keyboard often works best.
- No focus movement: Use
TabandEnterwhen arrow keys don’t move the selection. - USB hub: Avoid hubs. Plug the keyboard directly into the PS5.
Method 3: Safe Mode reset from a hard reboot scenario (offline reinstall)
If your PS5 won’t navigate menus at all, Safe Mode plus an offline system software reinstall is the most reliable “no controller” path. This method doesn’t depend on your home network quality.
What this is best for
- Your PS5 can’t reach the normal Home Screen
- Remote Play fails
- Safe Mode input is limited or your keyboard won’t select reliably
Step-by-step
- Power off the PS5 completely.
- Put your PS5 into Safe Mode (hold power button, release after the second beep).
- Use the keyboard if available to select the recovery option that triggers reinstall. If keyboard navigation is limited, keep trying
TabandEnter. - Choose the option that reinstalls system software as part of recovery/reset (often described as reinstalling system software from USB or a reset that includes system software restoration).
- Follow the prompts to install from USB.
- After reinstall finishes, complete any reset steps shown and let the PS5 reboot into setup.
Download and prepare system software
- On a computer, download the latest PS5 system software from Sony/PlayStation’s official support site.
- Use a USB drive formatted to FAT32 (most compatibility issues disappear with FAT32).
- Create the folder structure required by PS5 recovery. Typically, it looks like:
PS5>UPDATE. - Copy the downloaded update file into that folder.
- Safely eject the USB drive and plug it into the PS5 while in Safe Mode.
File names and the exact folder layout must match what Sony specifies for your version. If anything is off (wrong folder name, wrong format), the PS5 won’t recognize the update.
Install system software and reset
- From Safe Mode, select the reinstall option that uses USB.
- Confirm and start the process.
- Wait until completion. Do not power off during installation.
- When the system boots, you’ll see setup prompts. The console will behave like a fresh start.
Common failures and how to fix them
- USB not detected: Try another USB port and remove any USB hub. Reformat the drive to FAT32.
- Update file not found: Double-check the folder path and filename. Ensure you didn’t download a PS4 package by mistake.
- Stuck at Safe Mode: Unplug the USB drive, restart into Safe Mode again, and reselect the option.
- Installation errors: Re-download the system software file—corrupted downloads are common.
Choosing between Reset Options: which one should you use?
Not all “reset” actions are equal. If your goal is to wipe everything before selling, the “reset PS5” style option is the one you want. If you only need to clear trouble, default setting restoration is less destructive.

| Reset option | Best for | Impact |
|---|---|---|
| Reset PS5 | Full factory reset before resale, major troubleshooting, wiping local user data | Removes users/config on the PS5, clears installed games, may reinstall system software depending on the prompt |
| Restore Default Settings | Fixing misconfigurations without wiping everything | Keeps games/apps but resets settings to default |
| Clear Cache and Rebuild Database (if shown in recovery) | Performance issues, corrupted caches, library indexing glitches | Less destructive than factory reset; can still take time |
After the reset: signing in, downloads, and storage sanity checks
Once the PS5 boots, you’ll go through setup (region, language, network). Then sign in with your PSN account and check cloud saves.
After that, re-download games you want. If you reset storage or reinstalled system software, installed game licenses will still be available under your account, but you’ll need to download again.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming cloud saves are automatic: Cloud sync depends on settings and membership.
- Forgetting to keep the PS5 powered: Don’t interrupt installation during system software recovery.
- Using the wrong USB format: If you’re reinstalling from USB, FAT32 is the safest default.
- Choosing the wrong reset level: If you only want to troubleshoot, “restore default settings” is less destructive than a full reset.
- Skipping Wi‑Fi when needed: Some resets still want downloads after reboot; having internet helps.
FAQs
Can I factory reset a PS5 without any controller at all?
Yes. The PlayStation app via Remote Play can get you to Settings for a reset, and Safe Mode with a USB keyboard can also work for selection/confirmation. If you can’t navigate input, offline reinstall from USB is the most reliable route.
Will a factory reset delete my saved games?
It deletes local save data stored on the PS5, but cloud saves may remain if you had PlayStation Plus cloud sync enabled. Always verify your saves after the reset.
Do I need Wi‑Fi to reset from Safe Mode?
Some flows can run without Wi‑Fi, especially if you reinstall system software from a USB drive. If the process requires system downloads, you’ll need internet.
Rank #4
- Media playback controls - Quickly navigate media with built-in play/pause, fast forward and fast reverse buttons.
- Seamless console compatibility - Power on your PS5 console and navigate its menus directly with the remote for ultimate convenience.
- TV settings - Adjust the volume and power settings of compatible TVs with the built-in IR transmitter. PS5 system software update may be required.
My USB keyboard doesn’t work in Safe Mode. What should I do?
Try another USB port and remove hubs. If possible, use a basic wired USB keyboard (not a wireless keyboard with a proprietary dongle). You can also switch to the offline reinstall approach and use the keyboard only to the extent needed—or retry Safe Mode selection with Tab and Enter.

Is there a difference between Reset PS5 and Restore Default Settings?
Yes. Reset PS5 is the factory-reset style wipe that’s meant to clear the console back to a fresh state. Restore Default Settings primarily resets system configuration and is less destructive.
What if the reset keeps failing or rebooting in a loop?
Re-attempt using Method 3 (offline reinstall). Corrupted system data is a common cause, and reinstalling from USB with the correct folder structure and FAT32 formatting usually resolves it.
Bottom Line
If you need to factory reset a PS5 without controller, start with the simplest path that matches your situation. Use the PlayStation app (Remote Play) when the PS5 is booting normally, and use Safe Mode with a USB keyboard or offline USB reinstall when navigation is impossible.
Pick the right reset level for your goal—full resale-grade wipe means Reset PS5. Then sign in again and re-download your games while verifying cloud saves before you assume anything is gone.
