Google Maps makes it pretty easy to share a trip with someone—whether you want them to follow your route in real time, receive a route link they can open later, or see where you’ve been.

The best method depends on what you’re trying to share: a one-time route link, live location during travel, or a sequence of stops. Below is the practical playbook for each scenario.

  • Route sharing: send a link for your destination (or multi-stop route) so the other person can open it and follow along.
  • Live sharing: share your real-time location while you travel, so the other person sees your movement.
  • Trip history / timeline-style sharing: share where you’ve been, typically via Timeline/Location History context (availability varies).

Prerequisites and what your recipient needs

Before you start, make sure you and your recipient can actually view what you share.

On your phone

  • You’ll need Google Maps installed and signed into a Google account.
  • You’ll need Location permissions granted for live sharing and navigation-based features.
  • For live sharing, your device must have enough GPS signal (outdoors helps).

On their side

  • They need the ability to open Google Maps links (they can use the app or the browser).
  • For live location, they’ll typically need to accept/enable whatever prompt appears when you start sharing.

Method 1: Share your trip’s route (share the navigation link)

This is the fastest option when you want someone to navigate the same route, even if you’re not sharing live movement.

Android

Use the share action from navigation after you set your route.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Google Maps.
  2. Search for your destination, then tap Directions.
  3. Choose your transport mode (Driving, Transit, Walking, etc.).
  4. Tap Start (or begin directions preview).
  5. Tap Share (often a paper airplane icon or “Share” button on the route screen).
  6. Select how you want to share (Messages, Gmail, WhatsApp, etc.).
  7. Send the link.

iPhone or iPad

The workflow is similar: plan the route, then share the directions link.

  1. Open Google Maps on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Search for your destination and tap Directions.
  3. Select your mode (example: Driving).
  4. Tap Start to confirm your route.
  5. Tap Share on the directions screen.
  6. Pick a sharing method and send.

What the recipient sees

They’ll usually get a link that opens Google Maps with your destination (and often the route preview). If you change route directions after sending, their link may not automatically update unless you share again or use live sharing.

Method 2: Share live location while you travel

If you want the recipient to see where you are moving, live location sharing is the right tool. It’s also the easiest way to handle “Are you close yet?” moments.

Android

Live sharing is typically available from the navigation or profile/location controls, depending on your app version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Google Maps and start directions to your destination.
  2. On the navigation screen, look for Share or Live location.
  3. Select Share your live location.
  4. Choose the contact or app (Messages, etc.).
  5. Set how long you want to share (common options include 15 minutes, 1 hour, or until you stop, depending on availability).
  6. Tap Send or confirm.

iPhone or iPad (iOS)

On iOS, location sharing requires Location Services permissions. Once enabled, you can share during navigation.

  1. Open Google Maps.
  2. Start directions to your destination.
  3. Tap Share (or the live-location option if shown).
  4. Select Share your live location.
  5. Choose the person to share with and the time window.
  6. Confirm and send.

Set location permission (only if live sharing fails)

If live sharing doesn’t show up or the recipient sees no movement, check permissions.

  • iPhone / iPad: Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Google Maps → set to While Using the App.
  • Android: Settings → Apps → Google Maps → Permissions → set Location to Allow while in use.

Method 3: Share stops using Timeline / Location History context

Timeline-style sharing can help when you want to show where you’ve been or how your trip progressed. It’s not the same as real-time live sharing.

Availability depends on whether Timeline and Location History are enabled on your Google account, and on your device permissions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to make Timeline work for trip sharing

  1. On your phone, open Google Maps.
  2. Tap your profile (top right) or your account area.
  3. Find Your timeline.
  4. If prompted, enable Timeline and ensure Location History is turned on in your Google account settings.

Sharing Timeline views

Once Timeline is available, Google Maps may let you share a day’s view or specific location entries. Because UI differs, the key idea is: open the Timeline entry you want to share, then look for Share or a share icon.

Method 4: Share a saved route or multi-stop plan

If your “trip” includes multiple stops (airport → hotel → dinner), sharing the whole sequence can be more helpful than sharing just the final destination. Depending on your region and account setup, Google Maps may support saving and sharing routes.

Build your multi-stop route

  1. Open Google Maps and start a route.
  2. Set your starting point and first stop.
  3. Add additional stops (you may see an Add stop button in the route planner).
  4. Review the order and estimated times.

Share the plan

  • Look for a Share option on the route screen or after saving.
  • If sharing isn’t offered for multi-stop routes in your build, use Method 1 repeatedly (share each key destination) or switch to live location sharing while you travel.

Method 5: Share a trip on desktop (Google Maps Web)

Desktop web is useful when you want to copy a link, send it from email, or plan a complex route with less typing.

Desktop web (Chrome/Safari/Edge)

  1. Go to Google Maps in your browser.
  2. Search for your destination and click Directions.
  3. Select your travel mode.
  4. Once the route appears, find and click Share (often near the route controls).
  5. Choose Copy link (or share directly to an app/site).
  6. Paste/send the link.

Using copied links effectively

When you copy a link from desktop, send it immediately after generating the route. If traffic conditions shift, their route ETA may still update once they open the link, but the exact path usually remains consistent.

Common problems and troubleshooting

If sharing doesn’t work, it’s usually permissions, app permissions, or a mismatch between what you shared (route vs live movement).

Problem: Recipient gets a link but can’t see directions

  • Verify you shared from the correct screen (directions/route screen, not just search results).
  • Try sharing again after confirming your route is visible.
  • Test opening the link yourself in an incognito window to rule out account/account-region effects.

Problem: Live location share shows no movement

  • Confirm your Location permission is set to While Using the App (iOS) / Allow while in use (Android).
  • Check that Location Services is turned on at the system level.
  • Move outdoors briefly to improve GPS lock.
  • Force-close and reopen Google Maps, then start navigation again and share from the route screen.

Problem: Share option is missing

  • Update Google Maps from the App Store / Google Play.
  • Restart the phone and retry from the navigation screen.
  • If you’re using a specific mode (Transit vs Driving), try switching modes—some share controls are shown only in certain flows.

Problem: Link works, but recipient can’t follow the correct starting point

Route links can depend on device context. If the app chooses a different starting point, instruct them to tap Start after opening, or resend with your chosen start point clearly set before sharing.

Privacy, permissions, and edge cases

Sharing trips touches both privacy and connectivity. A few practical realities help you avoid surprises.

Live location vs route link

  • Route links share the plan. They don’t expose your ongoing movement after sending.
  • Live location shares your movement during the active window. End sharing when you arrive.

Time limits and stopping sharing

Live sharing often includes a duration (for example, 15 minutes or 1 hour). If your window ends early, start navigation again and share with a new timer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cell coverage and battery saver

  • Live sharing may degrade or pause in weak signal areas.
  • Battery Saver / Low Power Mode can restrict background location. If the recipient sees you “stuck,” try disabling battery restrictions for Google Maps.

FAQs

Can I share my trip from Google Maps without a Google account?

You can open some Google Maps links without logging in, but sharing features typically work best when you’re signed into Google Maps on your device.

Will my recipient see traffic and ETA changes?

For route links, yes—once they open the directions, Google Maps can use live traffic to update the ETA. For live location sharing, the recipient sees your position as you move; traffic still affects your ETA, but they can judge progress visually.

Can I share my trip in a group chat?

Yes. When you tap Share, choose a group chat app (like Messages or WhatsApp) if it appears in the share sheet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does live location sharing drain battery?

It can. If you’re traveling a long distance, share with a timed window or stop sharing when you arrive. Turning off battery-saving restrictions for Google Maps can also improve reliability.

Why does my shared location stop early?

Live sharing time limits, location permission changes, or GPS loss can end sharing. Re-enable sharing from the navigation screen and ensure permissions are still set to location access while using the app.

Bottom Line

If you want someone to follow your route, share the route link from Google Maps directions. If you want them to see where you are while you’re traveling, use live location sharing and set a realistic time window.

When sharing fails, start by checking Location permissions, then retry sharing from the navigation screen, and finally update Google Maps if the share controls don’t appear.
