On PS5, Party Chat and Game Chat are separate voice paths. The trick is routing your microphone to the chat you want—without accidentally muting yourself or talking to the wrong group.
This guide walks you through the reliable 2024 methods to switch between them, plus the settings that commonly cause confusion. If you follow the checklist and the troubleshooting section, you’ll get your voice back where it belongs.

What Party Chat vs Game Chat means on PS5 (and why you care)
Party Chat is for your PlayStation party members. It’s usually persistent even when you change games, and many players prefer it because it’s stable and centralized.
Game Chat is controlled by the specific game session (match, lobby, squad). Some titles treat game voice separately, while others provide limited toggles.

Switching “between” them usually means one of two things: (1) changing what you hear (audio routing), and (2) changing where your microphone is sent (voice routing). Both matter.
Prerequisites before you switch
- You’re signed in to PSN and in the correct party (if you’re using Party Chat).
- Your headset is connected (controller 3.5mm or USB/Bluetooth). PS5 audio devices can behave differently depending on the connection type.
- Your microphone isn’t muted on the headset/controller. Many headsets have a physical mute toggle.
- You’re inside a voice-enabled context (a multiplayer lobby for game chat, or an active party).
Method 1: Switch quickly using the PS5 Control Center
This is the fastest path when you already know which chat you want. The Control Center gives you quick access to voice chat audio routing.
- While you’re in-game or on the party screen, press the PS button to open the Control Center.
- Select Sound (or open the panel showing audio options).
- Look for Microphone / Voice Chat Output / chat routing controls (wording varies slightly by firmware and game state).
- Choose the route that matches your goal:
- Party Chat when you want your voice heard by party members.
- Game Chat when you want your voice heard by teammates in the match.
- Speak for 2–3 seconds and check the in-UI mic indicators (or have someone confirm).
If you don’t see a chat routing control here, use Method 2 (system settings) or Method 3 (game options). Some games override or hide the choice.

Method 2: Set your default voice chat behavior
When the switch feels inconsistent, it’s often because your default audio/voice routing doesn’t match your current preference. System settings help you keep the behavior predictable.
Open Settings
- From the PS5 home screen, go to Settings.
- Select Sound.
Adjust Audio & Voice Chat
- Find Audio Output options if you’re also troubleshooting what you can hear.
- Open Microphone or Voice Chat related settings (the exact label can vary by system update).
- Set Voice Chat Output Device to your active headset or controller audio path.
- Set any option equivalent to Voice Chat routing so it favors the chat type you use most (Party vs Game, when available).
- Save changes, then test: have a party member and one game teammate confirm where they hear you.
Gotcha: If your headset output device is wrong, you might still be “switching,” but your voice won’t arrive (or you’ll hear the wrong group).
Method 3: Change it from inside the game (when supported)
Many games provide their own voice routing toggle. If the game exposes it, it’s often the most reliable way to decide whether your mic goes to party or game.

- Hear your Voice Level with Variable Mic Monitoring
- Low-Latency 2.4GHz Wireless plus Bluetooth 5.2 Connectivity
- Amplified 40mm Drivers for Powerful Spatial Audio
- QuickSwitch Button for Seamless Wireless to Bluetooth Switching
- Four Turtle Beach Audio EQ Modes
- Open the game’s Settings or Audio menu.
- Look for Voice Chat, Game Chat, Party Chat, or Communication settings.
- Set the chat routing option to match your goal (for example, choose Game Chat if available).
- Check Input/Output settings if the game asks for microphone permissions.
- Return to the lobby and test with one teammate.
Some titles also let you mute specific players independent of Party/Game. That can look like “switching failed,” when it’s actually a per-player mute.
Method 4: Confirm who your mic is routed to
Switching works best when you verify quickly. Don’t rely on guesswork—use a short test.
Check mic status indicators
- Watch for the mic icon change on PS5 (or the headset inline indicator) when you speak.
- If you’re using a controller with a mute button, confirm it’s off.
- Check whether the UI shows you are muted in the current chat context.
Do a quick test call
- Ask one party member to listen in Party Chat.
- Ask one in-game teammate to listen in Game Chat.
- Switch once (using Method 1, 2, or 3) and speak.
- Flip back and confirm the voice moves to the other group.
Troubleshooting when you can’t switch or nobody can hear you
If switching doesn’t behave, the fix is usually one of these: wrong output device, a mute state, per-game restrictions, or party/game overlap quirks.

- Mappable Wheel and Mode Button for Customizable Functions
- QuickSwitch Button for Seamless Wireless to Bluetooth switching
- Flip-to-Mute Mic with A.I.-Based Noise Reduction
- Multiplatform, Low-latency 2.4GHz Wireless plus Bluetooth 5.2
Scenario A: You hear game audio but your voice goes to the wrong place
- Re-run Method 1 from the Control Center and explicitly change the voice output routing.
- Open Settings > Sound and verify the Microphone / Voice Chat output device matches your headset.
- Inside the game, set the Voice Chat routing option to the chat you want (Method 3).
Scenario B: You can’t hear party members (or it’s muted)
- Press PS > open Sound controls.
- Confirm volume sliders aren’t zeroed for voice.
- Check if the party member is muted (some PS5 party UIs allow per-member mute).
- Ask them to send a quick test phrase and verify the chat works.
Scenario C: The option is missing or greyed out
- Some games hide routing toggles if you’re not in the correct lobby state (e.g., not fully joined to the match).
- Try switching while you’re in the lobby, then enter the match.
- Temporarily leave and rejoin the party or game session (this refreshes voice routing state).
- Restart the game app, not just the match—voice options sometimes fail to initialize until a full relaunch.
Scenario D: NAT/voice issues or temporary PSN glitches
- Run a network check from PS5 (if your connection is unstable, voice can degrade or drop routing).
- Test with a different party member or a different game lobby to isolate whether it’s party-side or game-side.
- If other users report hearing problems at the same time, PSN voice services may be temporarily impacted—wait 5–15 minutes and retry.
Common mistakes that break chat switching
- Using the wrong headset output: Bluetooth devices and USB dongles can show up as different audio paths.
- Forgetting per-game muting: many games let you mute players individually.
- Mic mute is toggled twice: one mute on the headset and another in the PS5 UI.
- Switching too early: before fully joining the match or party session.
- Assuming Party Chat always overrides: on some titles, game voice can take priority depending on how the game is configured.
Comparison: which chat to use for which situation
Use Party Chat when
- You want the same group voice across multiple games or modes.
- You’re playing with friends and don’t want teammate discovery noise.
- You prefer more control over who talks without relying on in-game settings.
Use Game Chat when
- Your match requires coordination with the squad (tactical comms, callouts).
- You want proximity-style communication or built-in squad voice behavior.
- You’re playing with randoms and want to avoid the friction of joining party voice.
FAQs
Can I hear both Party Chat and Game Chat at the same time on PS5?
Sometimes, depending on the headset settings and the specific game. Many setups allow balancing voice volumes, but full “two-ways simultaneously” behavior is game- and routing-dependent. If your UI doesn’t show both, you may need to choose one active voice output at a time.
Why does my voice work in Party Chat but not in Game Chat?
Common causes are game-specific voice routing settings (Method 3), per-game privacy/communication options, or the microphone output device set incorrectly in system sound settings (Method 2). Re-check your mic mute states and test by having one party member and one in-game teammate confirm.
Does switching require leaving the party or restarting the game?
Not usually. Method 1 (Control Center) and Method 2 (system settings) should handle most cases. If the option is missing or stuck, a lobby rejoin or a full game relaunch often resets the voice routing state.

How do I stop hearing one group without breaking the other?
Use the PS5 sound controls for voice volume and confirm per-player mute states inside the party or game. If you can route voice to the other chat, you can also reduce confusion by routing your mic to the correct place first, then adjust volumes.
Bottom Line
To switch between Party Chat and Game Chat on PS5 in 2024, focus on voice routing (where your microphone goes) and audio output (what you hear). Start with the Control Center, then lock in the headset/microphone output in Settings.
If the switch still doesn’t behave, the game’s own voice chat options and per-player muting are the usual culprits. Test with one party member and one teammate so you can confirm where your voice actually lands.
