How to Factory Reset iPad without Apple ID Password | Full Guide

Factory resetting an iPad without the Apple ID password can be possible, but the right method depends on what you can still access: the iPad passcode, a trusted device, the Apple account, Find My, or a computer. Some reset options erase the device successfully, while others may leave you at Activation Lock during setup.

This guide covers legitimate reset methods, including Recovery Mode, Find My, and Apple ID password recovery, while making clear where Apple’s security protections limit what you can do. It also explains what happens to your data, when a backup matters, and proof of ownership may be required if the iPad is locked to an Apple Account you cannot access.

What Happens When You Factory Reset an iPad Without an Apple ID Password

Factory resetting an iPad removes the local contents of the device and reinstalls it to a clean setup state. In practice, that means photos stored only on the iPad, downloaded apps, messages, device settings, saved Wi-Fi networks, Safari data, and locally stored files are erased. If the iPad is synced with iCloud or backed up to a computer, some data may be recoverable later, but a reset itself is designed to wipe the device.

Not having the Apple ID password mainly affects what happens before and after the erase. If you can open the Settings app and choose to erase the iPad normally, iPadOS usually asks for the Apple ID password when Find My iPad is enabled. This is because the device is tied to an Apple Account for anti-theft protection. Without that password, the Settings-based erase may be blocked.

If you use a computer and put the iPad into recovery mode, you can still erase and reinstall iPadOS without entering the Apple ID password during the restore process. This is a legitimate built-in recovery method for locked or malfunctioning devices. However, it does not remove Activation Lock. After the reset, the iPad may show a setup screen asking for the Apple ID and password previously used on the device.

Resetting the device is not the same as removing Activation Lock

Activation Lock is Apple’s security feature connected to Find My iPad. It remains associated with the device through Apple’s activation servers, not just the data stored on the iPad. A factory reset clears the iPad’s storage, but if Activation Lock was enabled, Apple still requires the original Apple ID credentials before the device can be set up again.

Action What it removes What it may still require
Erase from Settings Apps, files, settings, local data Apple ID password if Find My is on
Recovery Mode restore Device data and installed iPadOS copy Previous Apple ID during setup if Activation Lock is active
Erase from Find My Device data remotely Access to the Apple Account used with Find My

The outcome depends on the iPad’s status before the reset. If Find My iPad was turned off, the device can usually be erased and set up again without the old Apple ID. If Find My was turned on, the reset may complete, but setup can stop at the Activation Lock screen. For a device you bought used, this means the previous owner may need to remove it from their Apple Account before you can use it.

In short, a factory reset without the Apple ID password can wipe the iPad, but it may not make the iPad usable. The safest path is to confirm whether you can access the Apple Account, reset the Apple ID password, contact the previous owner, or prepare proof of ownership before erasing. This avoids ending up with a clean iPad that is still locked during activation.

Before You Reset: Backups, Data Loss, and Activation Lock

Before erasing an iPad, separate two issues that are often confused: removing the data on the device and removing the Apple ID security lock tied to it. A factory reset deletes local content such as apps, photos, messages, downloaded files, settings, and saved accounts from the iPad. It does not automatically remove Activation Lock if Find My was enabled. After the reset, the iPad may still ask for the Apple ID and password that were previously used on the device.

If you still have access to the iPad and can unlock the screen, check whether anything needs to be saved before continuing. Open Settings and look for iCloud sync options such as Photos, Contacts, s, iCloud Drive, and Messages. If the iPad is already syncing these items to iCloud, they may return after signing in again with the same Apple Account. Content stored only on the iPad, however, can be permanently lost once the device is erased.

Check your backup options first

  • iCloud Backup: If you can access Settings and the Apple Account is still signed in, go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup and check the date of the last backup. If possible, run a new backup before resetting.
  • Computer backup: A trusted Mac or Windows PC may be able to back up the iPad through Finder or Apple Devices/iTunes. This usually requires the iPad to be unlocked and the computer to be trusted already.
  • Manual file saving: Photos, videos, PDFs, and documents may be copied to iCloud Drive, another cloud service, AirDrop, or a computer if the iPad is accessible.
  • No passcode access: If you cannot unlock the iPad, you generally cannot create a new backup before erasing it. In that case, only previously synced or backed-up data can be recovered.

Activation Lock is the main limitation when resetting without the Apple ID password. It is designed to prevent a lost or stolen iPad from being erased and reused by someone else. If Find My iPad is turned on, the device remains linked to the owner’s Apple Account even after recovery mode or a computer-based restore. During setup, the iPad may display an Activation Lock screen asking for the previous Apple ID credentials or the device passcode used before the erase, depending on the iPadOS version and circumstances.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Situation What to expect after reset
Find My was off before erasing The iPad can usually be set up normally after the reset.
Find My was on and you know the Apple ID password Enter the Apple ID credentials during setup to reactivate the iPad.
Find My was on but the password is unavailable The reset may complete, but setup can stop at Activation Lock.
The iPad was bought used and is linked to someone else The previous owner must remove it from their Apple Account, or Apple may require valid proof of purchase.

Also consider post-reset setup requirements. You may need Wi-Fi, the current device passcode, the Apple ID used previously, a verification code from a trusted device or phone number, or access to the email address connected to the account. If the iPad belongs to a school, business, or organization, it may be supervised through device management and can re-enroll after being erased. In that case, only the organization’s administrator can release or reconfigure it. Taking a few minutes to confirm backups, ownership, and Activation Lock status can prevent a reset from turning into a locked setup screen.

Method 1: Reset the iPad Using Recovery Mode on a Computer

Recovery Mode is Apple’s built-in computer-based reset method for an iPad you cannot unlock normally. It erases the device and reinstalls iPadOS using Finder on a Mac or the Apple Devices app/iTunes on Windows. This can help if you forgot the iPad passcode, the device is disabled, or Settings cannot be opened. It does not remove Activation Lock, so if Find My was enabled, the iPad may still ask for the previously linked Apple ID during setup after the erase.

You will need a Mac running macOS Catalina or later, or a Windows PC with the Apple Devices app installed. On older Windows setups, or older macOS versions, use iTunes instead. Use a reliable USB cable, make sure the computer has an internet connection, and allow enough time for the iPadOS download. If the download takes longer than about 15 minutes, the iPad may exit Recovery Mode; if that happens, let the download finish, then repeat the button steps to enter Recovery Mode again.

Steps to reset with Recovery Mode

  1. Turn off the iPad. For iPads without a Home button, hold the top button and either volume button, then slide to power off. For iPads with a Home button, hold the top button, then slide to power off.
  2. Connect the iPad to the computer while entering Recovery Mode. For iPads without a Home button, connect the cable while holding the top button until the recovery screen appears. For iPads with a Home button, connect the cable while holding the Home button until the recovery screen appears.
  3. Open Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes. Select the iPad when it appears. You should see a message saying the iPad has a problem and needs to be updated or restored.
  4. Choose Restore. Do not choose Update if your goal is a full factory reset. Restore erases the iPad and installs the latest compatible iPadOS version.
  5. Wait for the process to finish. Keep the iPad connected until the restore completes and the device restarts to the setup screen.

After the restore, the iPad behaves like a newly erased device. You can set it up as new or restore from an available backup. If Activation Lock appears, you must enter the Apple ID and password that were previously used with Find My on that iPad, or provide valid proof of ownership to Apple. A Recovery Mode restore cannot bypass that security check, and any tool or service claiming guaranteed removal without the owner’s credentials should be treated with caution.

This method is safest when you own the iPad, can access the linked Apple account after the reset, or know that Find My was not enabled. It is also useful before selling or giving away an iPad only if you can complete setup afterward and confirm that Activation Lock is cleared. If you are resetting a second-hand iPad, ask the previous owner to remove it from their Apple Account before you proceed; otherwise, the device may become stuck at the activation screen even though the erase itself succeeds.

Method 2: Erase iPad Through Find My If You Can Access the Apple Account Elsewhere

If you do not know the Apple ID password on the iPad itself but you are still signed in to the same Apple Account on another trusted device, you may be able to erase the iPad through Find My. This method is useful when the iPad is lost, unavailable, locked with a passcode, or not responding normally, but the Apple Account is still accessible from an iPhone, Mac, another iPad, or iCloud.com. It performs a remote erase, which removes the iPad’s local data and returns it to setup mode.

This does not bypass Apple’s security. The iPad remains linked to the Apple Account used with Find My, and Activation Lock may still appear during setup after the erase. To use the iPad again, you will usually need to enter the same Apple Account email and password, or remove the device from the account after erasing it. If you are erasing an iPad you bought second-hand, the previous owner must complete these steps from their own account.

Erase the iPad from another Apple device

  1. Open the Find My app on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac where the same Apple Account is already signed in.
  2. Select the Devices tab.
  3. Choose the iPad you want to reset from the device list.
  4. Scroll down and select Erase This Device.
  5. Follow the prompts to confirm the erase. You may be asked for the Apple Account password or device passcode on the trusted device.
  6. Keep the iPad connected to Wi-Fi or cellular data if possible. If it is offline, the erase will start the next time it connects to the internet.

Erase the iPad from iCloud.com

If you can sign in to the Apple Account in a web browser, go to iCloud.com/find and authenticate with two-factor authentication if requested. Select All Devices, choose the iPad, then click Erase This Device. This is often the easiest option when you have access to the Apple Account on a trusted phone number or device but do not have the iPad’s passcode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After the erase, decide whether the iPad should stay linked to the Apple Account. If you plan to keep using it, leave it in the account and sign in during setup. If you are selling, giving away, or returning the iPad to another person, remove it from the account after erasing by selecting the device in Find My and choosing Remove This Device or Remove from Account. This step clears Activation Lock for the next user.

Method 3: Reset Apple ID Password Before Erasing the iPad

If the iPad is still connected to your Apple ID but you do not know the password, resetting the Apple ID password is usually safer than erasing the device first. Once you regain access to the account, you can turn off Find My, make a fresh backup, sign out properly, and erase the iPad without running into Activation Lock during setup. This method is best when the Apple ID belongs to you, you can access a trusted phone number or email address, or you are still signed in on another Apple device.

Use a trusted Apple device

The easiest path is through another iPhone, iPad, or Mac that is already signed in with the same Apple ID. On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings, tap your name, then go to Sign-In & Security and choose Change Password. If the device has a passcode enabled, Apple may let you create a new Apple ID password after entering that device passcode. On a Mac, open System Settings, select your name, choose Sign-In & Security, then use Change Password.

After changing the password, wait a few minutes for Apple’s services to update. Then return to the iPad you want to erase and enter the new password when prompted. You can then go to Settings > [your name] > Find My > Find My iPad and turn it off, or use Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Erase All Content and Settings. Entering the current Apple ID password during this process removes the device from Find My and prevents Activation Lock from blocking the next setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Apple’s account recovery website

If you do not have another trusted Apple device, go to iforgot.apple.com in a browser and enter the Apple ID email address or phone number. Apple may ask you to confirm a trusted phone number, approve a verification code, answer account prompts, or use a recovery contact if one was set up. If enough verification is available, you can reset the password immediately. If not, Apple may start account recovery, which can take several days depending on the account’s security settings and the information you can provide.

  • Have ready: the Apple ID email address or phone number, trusted phone number, device passcode, and access to any recovery email or recovery contact.
  • After reset: sign in again on the iPad if asked, update the password in iCloud settings, and confirm that Find My can be turned off before erasing.
  • If account recovery is pending: avoid repeatedly starting the process from different devices, as this can delay recovery.

Resetting the Apple ID password does not restore forgotten iPad passcodes or recover data that was never backed up. It only restores access to the Apple account linked to the device. If the iPad is locked at the passcode screen, you may still need Recovery Mode to erase it, but having the correct Apple ID password afterward allows you to pass Activation Lock and set up the iPad again. If the Apple ID belongs to a previous owner, ask them to remove the iPad from their account at icloud.com/find or in the Find My app; resetting your own Apple ID will not remove another person’s Activation Lock.

What to Do If Activation Lock Appears After the Reset

If Activation Lock appears after you factory reset the iPad, the device is still linked to the Apple ID that was used with Find My before the erase. This is a security feature designed to prevent a lost or stolen iPad from being reused without permission. The reset may have removed the local data, apps, and settings, but it does not remove the ownership link stored on Apple’s servers.

On the setup screen, you may see a message asking for the Apple ID and password previously used on the iPad. In some cases, the email address is partially hidden, such as a••••@icloud.com. The safest next step depends on whether you are the original owner, bought the iPad second-hand, inherited it, or manage it for a family member or organization.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the Apple ID Already Linked to the iPad

If the iPad belongs to you or someone you can contact, enter the Apple ID and password shown on the Activation Lock screen. If the password is forgotten, reset it through Apple’s account recovery options, then return to the iPad setup process and try again. If two-factor authentication is enabled, you may need access to a trusted phone number, trusted Apple device, or recovery contact.

  • If the iPad came from a workplace or school: contact the IT administrator, as the device may also be supervised or enrolled in device management.

Ask the Previous Owner to Remove the iPad Remotely

If you bought the iPad used and Activation Lock appears, the previous owner must remove it from their Apple account. They do not need to give you their password. They can sign in to Find My or iCloud on another device, select the iPad, erase it if needed, and choose Remove from Account. After that, restart the iPad and begin setup again while connected to Wi-Fi.

For a clean handoff, ask the seller to remove the iPad while you are present or to confirm once it is removed. If you purchased it through a marketplace, keep your receipt, listing, serial number, and messages. If the seller cannot or will not remove Activation Lock, request a return or refund through the platform. No legitimate reset method can bypass Activation Lock without the linked Apple ID or Apple’s approval.

Check Whether Apple Can Help Remove Activation Lock

If you are the rightful owner but cannot access the Apple ID, Apple may review an Activation Lock support request. You will usually need proof that clearly connects you to the iPad. Acceptable documents often include the original sales receipt from Apple or an authorized reseller, showing the serial number, IMEI, or other device identifier. A simple photo of the iPad, a payment card statement, or a second-hand bill of sale may not be enough.

Avoid paid services, software tools, or instructions claiming to bypass Activation Lock. Many are scams, may damage the setup state of the iPad, or may involve unauthorized access. If Activation Lock remains after all legitimate options are exhausted, the iPad cannot be set up as a normal personal device until the linked account removes it or Apple approves an unlock request.

When to Contact Apple Support With Proof of Ownership

Contact Apple Support when you have reached a security barrier that cannot be removed by resetting the iPad, restoring it in Recovery Mode, or changing the Apple ID password. The most common situation is Activation Lock: after the iPad is erased, the setup screen still asks for the Apple ID and password that were previously used on the device. If you cannot access that account and cannot recover it through Apple’s account recovery tools, Apple is the only legitimate route for requesting Activation Lock removal.

You should also contact Apple if the iPad belonged to a family member, employee, school, or business account and the original Apple ID owner is unavailable. For example, a relative may have passed away, an employee may have left without removing the device from their account, or a second-hand iPad may still be linked to the previous owner. In these cases, Apple will not bypass the lock based on possession alone. You will need documentation that proves the device legally belongs to you or your organization.

Documents Apple may ask for

  • Original purchase receipt: A receipt or invoice from Apple or an authorized reseller showing the iPad serial number, IMEI, or other device identifier.
  • Proof of identity: A government-issued ID may be required to match the purchaser or authorized requester.
  • Business or school ownership records: Organizations may need purchase orders, asset records, mobile device management details, or authorization from an administrator.
  • Legal documentation: For inherited devices, Apple may require documents such as a death certificate, will, court order, or other estate paperwork, depending on the region and situation.

Before contacting Apple, locate the iPad’s serial number if possible. You may find it on the original box, purchase invoice, Apple ID device list, Finder or iTunes if the device was previously trusted, or on some iPad models printed on the back casing. If the iPad is stuck at the Activation Lock screen, tap the information icon if available to view device details. Having the serial number ready helps Apple confirm the exact device tied to your request.

If you bought the iPad used and it is still locked to someone else’s Apple ID, first ask the seller to remove it from their account at icloud.com/find or from the Find My app on another Apple device. They do not need your iPad in hand to remove it from their account remotely. If the seller cannot or will not do this, request a refund through the marketplace or payment provider. Apple generally will not remove Activation Lock for second-hand buyers without valid original proof of purchase from an approved source.

Apple Support can be reached through the Apple Support app, Apple’s support website, by phone, or at an Apple Store or authorized service provider. If Apple approves the request, the lock may be removed from Apple’s activation servers, after which you can restart setup and activate the iPad. If the request is denied, avoid paid “unlock” services that claim to bypass Activation Lock without credentials; many are scams, and any method that tampers with Apple’s security protections can leave the device unreliable or unusable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I factory reset an iPad without knowing the Apple ID password?

Yes, you can erase the iPad using Recovery Mode with a Mac or Windows PC, but that only removes the data and reinstalls iPadOS. If Activation Lock is enabled, the iPad will still ask for the Apple ID and password linked to it during setup. Without those credentials or proof of ownership accepted by Apple, you may not be able to use the device after the reset.

Will Recovery Mode remove Activation Lock from my iPad?

No. Recovery Mode can erase the iPad and reinstall the operating system, but it does not remove Activation Lock. Activation Lock is tied to Apple’s servers, so the device may still require the previous Apple ID after the reset. This is especially common with second-hand iPads that were not removed from the previous owner’s account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if I bought a used iPad and it asks for the previous owner’s Apple ID?

Contact the seller and ask them to remove the iPad from their Apple Account through Find My or iCloud.com. They do not need to give you their password; they only need to remove the device from their account. If they cannot or will not do that, you should request a refund because Apple generally will not unlock it without valid proof of original purchase.

Can Apple unlock an iPad if I forgot the Apple ID password?

Apple may help you regain access to the Apple Account through account recovery if you can verify ownership of the account. If the issue is Activation Lock, Apple may require proof of purchase showing the serial number, IMEI, or other device-identifying details. Receipts from private sellers or screenshots of online listings may not be enough.

Will factory resetting my iPad delete everything permanently?

Yes, a factory reset removes apps, photos, messages, settings, and local files from the iPad. If you have an iCloud or computer backup, you may be able to restore your data during setup after signing in. If there is no backup and the device has already been erased, the deleted data usually cannot be recovered.

Bottom Line

Factory resetting an iPad without the Apple ID password is possible in some situations, especially through Settings, recovery mode, Finder, or iTunes—but it will erase the device and may still require the original Apple ID afterward if Activation Lock is enabled. Before you reset, back up anything you can, confirm whether Find My is turned on, and choose the method that matches your access level.

If the iPad asks for the previous owner’s Apple ID after the reset, only the account holder or Apple Support with valid proof of ownership can remove that lock. Your safest next step is to try Apple’s account recovery, contact the original owner, or prepare your purchase documents before requesting help from Apple.
