To factory reset a first-generation Google Home Mini, press and hold the reset button on its bottom, below the power cord. Keep holding through the reset countdown until you hear the confirmation sound. A second-generation model is called Nest Mini and uses a different sequence: turn off its microphone, then press and hold the center of its top surface. Identify your model first, because the controls are not interchangeable.
Before you factory reset
Try troubleshooting the problem first. If you only need to restart the speaker, unplug its power cable, wait one minute, then reconnect it; Google says this reboot preserves settings. A reboot is different from a factory reset. Google’s reboot instructions provide the procedure.

A factory reset clears data from the device, cannot be undone, and disconnects it from everyone in the home. You cannot reset the speaker by voice or from the Google Home app: use the physical controls on the device. Google’s factory-reset guidance explains the effects and button sequences.

- Google Home Mini (first generation): The reset button is on the bottom, below the power cord. Look for the etched circle.
- Nest Mini (second generation): It has no base reset button for this procedure. You’ll use the microphone switch on the side and the touch area in the top center, where the lights are.
Reset a first-generation Google Home Mini
- Leave the speaker plugged in and locate the reset button on the bottom, below the power cord.
- Press and hold the button. The reset begins after about 5 seconds; continue holding for about 10 seconds more.
- Let go when you hear the sound confirming that the speaker is resetting.
Google describes four orange lights as confirmation of a reset request on the Home Mini. Use the full button-hold sequence and wait for the confirmation sound. For details, see Google’s guide to speaker lights.

Reset a second-generation Nest Mini
- Move the microphone switch on the side to turn the microphone off. The lights on top turn orange.
- Press and hold the center of the top surface, where the lights are. The reset begins after about 5 seconds.
- Continue holding for about 10 seconds more, until you hear the confirmation sound.
These steps are for the Nest Mini, not the first-generation Home Mini. Google lists both procedures in its factory-reset instructions.
