Leave your phone outside the shower area. Apple, Google, and Samsung all advise against exposing phones to shower spray, steam, or high humidity. That is a sensible precaution—not proof that one shower will damage every phone. Water-resistance ratings do not make a device shower-proof, and resistance can diminish with age and wear.
Can I take my phone in the shower?
It is better not to. Google Pixel Phone Help puts it plainly: “Don’t take your phone into a sink, shower, sauna, or bathtub.” Apple lists bathing, steam rooms, extremely humid conditions, and pressurized or high-velocity water such as shower spray among exposures to avoid. Samsung cautions Galaxy users against abnormal temperatures such as saunas and steam rooms, as well as places with high humidity.

These are manufacturers’ precautionary instructions, not a claim that every phone will fail after a single exposure. The sources do not establish a universal failure mechanism or quantify the chance that shower steam will damage a particular device. The practical point is simpler: shower conditions are outside the use manufacturers recommend.

An IP rating describes protection under specified test conditions; it does not mean a phone is waterproof or approved for every kind of water exposure. Google’s explanation of IP68 describes dust-tight protection and fresh-water immersion at a manufacturer-specified depth and duration, which can typically be up to 1.5 metres for 30 minutes. Samsung UK Support gives IPx7 as 30 minutes at 1 metre and IPx8 as 30 minutes at 1.5 metres, while noting that the rating depends on the Galaxy model. Those immersion conditions do not override the manufacturers’ separate advice to keep phones away from showers, steam, and high humidity.

For a specific phone, check the exact model’s rating and the manufacturer’s own care instructions. A rating number alone does not settle whether a particular exposure is safe.
Water resistance can decline, and repairs may be costly
Apple says splash, water, and dust resistance are not permanent and may decrease through normal wear. Google likewise says normal wear and tear can reduce a Pixel’s water resistance. Samsung notes that ratings vary by Galaxy model. A phone’s history and condition matter, so do not assume a device retains its original resistance after years of use, a drop, or repair.

Liquid damage may also fall outside standard warranty coverage. Apple says liquid damage is not covered by its one-year limited warranty, subject to possible rights under consumer law. Google’s warranty guidance excludes damage from external causes such as water damage. Coverage depends on the specific device, region, and applicable terms; check those before assuming a repair will be covered.

Follow the instructions for your exact phone rather than applying one brand’s drying interval to another. The manufacturers’ shared practical advice is to keep charging accessories disconnected until the device and its connector are dry.

- Apple: Unplug cables, wipe the phone with a soft, lint-free cloth, and allow airflow. Apple says not to charge or connect an accessory until the phone is completely dry and advises waiting at least five hours after liquid exposure before doing so.
- Google Pixel: If the phone falls in water, Google says to turn it off, dry it with a soft cloth, and leave it at room temperature.
- Samsung Galaxy: Dry the phone thoroughly and do not connect a charger or accessory until the external connector is completely dry.
If the phone behaves abnormally after getting wet, consult its manufacturer’s support guidance rather than testing it by charging it while damp.

Google recommends: “When you’re near water or steam, use a Bluetooth speaker to listen to your phone from a distance.” Keep the phone outside the shower area, and use the speaker only in ways its own manufacturer permits; the suggestion does not mean every speaker is safe in a wet shower.
