Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The safest way to keep valuable DMZ loot is to decide what counts as a successful run before you open the first container, then extract as soon as that target is secured. Keep your backpack organized, preserve enough armor, ammunition, time, and mobility for the trip out, and use a Secure slot for the one item you would regret losing most. A successful extraction carries recovered gear into later deployments; an overlong raid can turn a good haul into an unrecoverable loss.
This guide covers the current Modern Warfare 4-era DMZ systems described by Call of Duty in 2026, while noting where the original 2022 Warzone 2.0 rules differ. Names, capacities, and extraction mechanics can change between releases and patches, so check the labels in your own build.

What happens to loot when you extract or die?
DMZ is an extraction mode built around a single-life risk. Call of Duty’s official tactical overview explains that dying removes all nonpermanent items in your Backpack. You keep an item only by completing an extraction or by placing it in a storage system that the current version explicitly protects.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →During a deployment, your Backpack can contain weapons, equipment, Cash, Resources, 3D Printer Ingredients, and other valuables. Those objects are not automatically safe because you picked them up. The extraction helicopter is the event that converts a successful haul into inventory you can use later. If you are eliminated, disconnected in a way the game treats as a failed deployment, or remain in the combat zone until the match ends, assume ordinary backpack contents are at risk.

The current Forward Operating Base (FOB) system adds Secure slots to upgraded backpacks. A Secure slot can insure a protected item when you fail to exfil, according to the 2026 FOB guide. It is a limited safety net, not a replacement for leaving on time: it protects the designated item while everything else remains subject to the deployment’s normal risk.
Set an extraction goal before you deploy
Looting becomes dangerous when every container feels like a reason to stay. Define a concrete success condition during the preparation screen. Examples include obtaining a mission component, finding a particular ingredient for an FOB upgrade, extracting a rare weapon, or reaching a stated Cash amount. Write the condition mentally in one sentence: “Once I have this item, I leave.”
Choose the run type that matches your goal
| Run type | Best use | Expected exposure | What to decide before launch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quick loot run | Secure one mission item, ingredient, or modest Cash target | Lower distance and fewer engagements when routed well | Nearest practical exfil and a hard leave-by time |
| Deep objective run | Multiple objectives, high-tier gear, or a large collection of ingredients | More travel, more hostile AI and rival Operator contact | Primary exfil, fallback exfil, Secure-slot item, and minimum reserve supplies |
The table is a planning framework rather than a promise of a particular loot value or survival rate. Official pages do not publish an independent average haul, extraction percentage, or time-to-survival figure. Use the route, objective, and risk information visible in your match rather than assuming a deep run is automatically more profitable.

An item threshold controls greed; a clock threshold controls panic. Pick a time at which you stop searching and start moving, leaving a buffer for doors, ladders, fights, vehicle changes, and the extraction countdown. If the nearest marked exfil becomes unsafe, that buffer gives you time to reposition. Waiting for the final exfil should be an intentional fallback, not your default plan.
Understand backpack capacity and keep it readable
The 2026 Call of Duty staff guide lists the Basic Pack as having eight available slots. Upgraded backpacks add item slots, and some include Secure slots. Treat every slot as a decision: an empty space is useful because it lets you take a mission item without discarding something important later.
What belongs in a slot?
Found items must be manually placed in the Backpack. Keep the layout legible by grouping mission items, ingredients, valuables, and combat supplies rather than filling every opening with the first object you see. Before opening a new container, glance at your remaining slots and identify the item you would drop if a higher-priority object appeared.

- Crafting or FOB ingredient: Preserve an ingredient required for a known recipe or upgrade rather than collecting unrelated materials.
- Rare weapon or gear: Take it when it materially improves the next deployment and you have a realistic plan to extract it.
- Cash or saleable valuable: Use the space when it supports a stated objective, purchase, or upgrade.
- Filler: Carry low-value objects only after the categories above are covered.
Resources and 3D Printer Ingredients are not the same
The current guide distinguishes automatically broken-down Resources from intact 3D Printer Ingredients. Ingredients stay in the Backpack during the deployment and are moved to the Stash after a successful extraction. They can then support crafting and FOB upgrades. Do not discard an intact ingredient merely because the interface also shows a Resource count; verify which object you are holding and whether your current objective needs the intact form.

Use a strict loot-triage order
When the Backpack is nearly full, compare the replacement cost and future use of each object instead of its apparent rarity. Apply this order from top to bottom:
- Keep the mission or progression item with the highest replacement cost.
- Keep an ingredient required for a known craft, recipe, or FOB upgrade.
- Keep a rare weapon or gear piece that provides a meaningful advantage in the next deployment.
- Keep Cash or sale valuables that serve a declared objective.
- Drop low-value filler first.
This order prevents a common mistake: sacrificing the item that justified the deployment to preserve several mediocre objects that merely look valuable in isolation. If you cannot name the next use for an item, it is a candidate for replacement when a mission-critical object appears.
Protect one irreplaceable item with a Secure slot
When your current backpack offers a Secure slot, assign it to the item that would be hardest to replace, not automatically to the most expensive-looking object. A mission component that blocks progression may be more valuable to you than a weapon you can find again. An ingredient needed for a rare upgrade may also deserve priority.
How to choose the protected item
- Ask whether losing it would force another full deployment or prevent a planned upgrade.
- Prefer a unique or unusually scarce item over a common high-tier weapon.
- Do not use the slot as justification for staying after your extraction threshold is met.
- Confirm that the item is actually displayed in the Secure slot before taking additional risks.
The Secure slot protects only what the current rules say it protects. It does not make the rest of the Backpack permanent, and it does not guarantee recovery from every technical failure. Treat it as insurance for one priority object while still planning to complete a normal extraction.
Plan the route to an exfil before you start looting
Marked extraction points are shown during a DMZ match, and you can call an extraction helicopter at those locations. The most convenient point at the start of a deployment may not be the safest one after the map changes, rival Operators arrive, or hostile forces occupy the approach. Identify a primary exfil and at least one fallback while you still have time to travel.

Calculate a practical departure window
Leave enough time for the full route, not just the distance shown on the map. Add margin for opening locked doors, climbing, healing, changing vehicles, fighting through an AI patrol, and waiting for the helicopter’s arrival and departure sequence. A route that is technically reachable can still fail if you arrive without armor or ammunition for the final contact.
Know what final exfil means
If the marked exfils are gone, the final exfil is the last escape opportunity. It is not an additional ordinary point that will appear whenever you need one. Use it as a deliberate contingency when your target requires the extra time; do not base every deployment on reaching it. As the match advances, assume travel and competition become less forgiving.
Approach extraction as a PvPvE fight
Exfil is not a guaranteed safe zone. Rival Operators and hostile AI can interrupt the route, and the helicopter’s location can attract attention. Arrive with enough armor, ammunition, and medical capacity to survive contact, but avoid spending all of those resources on optional rooms immediately before departure.
Before calling the helicopter
- Scan the approach, rooftops, windows, and likely vehicle positions.
- Reload every weapon and replace damaged armor if the area allows it.
- Check the map for a fallback exfil and confirm you still have time to reach it.
- Decide whether the current location is defensible or whether another marked point offers a better chance.
After calling the helicopter
Use cover and listen for both AI reinforcement and Operator movement. Do not stand in the most obvious open angle while waiting. If the approach becomes exposed, break contact and move to the fallback while the clock still permits it. Abandoning a bad exfil early is safer than defending a compromised position until no alternative remains.
Decide when one more container is not worth it
Use a simple marginal-value test whenever you are tempted to continue. Compare the likely benefit of the next room with four costs: distance to exfil, remaining time, exposure to PvE and PvP, and the value already in your Backpack. The more irreplaceable your current item, the less attractive an uncertain extra search becomes.
Extract now when these conditions align
- Your declared mission item or Cash target is secured.
- Your Backpack has a rare item or required ingredient that would be painful to replace.
- The nearest practical exfil is still reachable with a reserve for combat and the helicopter sequence.
- Your armor, ammunition, or healing supplies are declining faster than the expected loot value.
- The map shows increased competition or your route has become exposed.
Continue only when the upside is specific
Stay longer when you can name the exact objective that justifies the risk, have enough time for both the search and the return trip, and have a fallback route. “There might be something better” is not a sufficient objective. If the next container is merely convenient, start moving toward extraction.

What to do immediately after a successful extraction
Do not redeploy with your most important items still sitting in a temporary Backpack state. The official FOB guide advises offloading items needed in future deployments every time you extract.
- Open the post-deployment inventory and verify that the intended weapon, ingredient, mission item, and Cash were credited.
- Move ingredients, weapons, and other keepers into the Stash or the persistent storage location provided by your current build.
- Check that the Secure-slot item remains where you expect it and that no object is still marked as temporary.
- Review the next objective before selecting another deployment, then reserve the slots and equipment it requires.
This offload step separates a completed haul from a lucky escape that is accidentally put back at risk on the next launch.
2022 rules and the current 2026 systems
The original tactical overview for Warzone 2.0 DMZ, published in 2022, describes Al Mazrah, backpacks, marked exfils, a final exfil, and the single-life loss rule. Current 2026 Call of Duty pages describe a Modern Warfare 4-era DMZ with a Forward Operating Base, Stash, 3D Printer, persistent operator progression, and Secure backpack slots.
| System element | 2022 tactical overview | 2026 guide description | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Backpack loss | Nonpermanent Backpack items are lost on death | That single-life principle remains the risk basis | Plan to extract rather than treating pickup as permanent |
| Extraction | Marked exfils and a final exfil are documented | Extraction remains the route for carrying recovered gear forward | Track ordinary points and preserve a final-exfil fallback |
| Basic capacity | Capacity not stated in the overview | Basic Pack: eight available slots | Leave open space for mission items |
| Persistent systems | FOB, Stash, and 3D Printer systems not described | Ingredients, Stash storage, persistent progression, and Secure slots are described | Offload after extraction and protect one priority item when available |
Because these systems are version-dependent, use the labels and tooltips in the release you are playing. A guide written for the 2022 rules should not be assumed to describe every 2026 backpack, storage, or crafting behavior.

Example: the mission item appears early
You find the required component in the second building, but your Backpack also contains low-value sale items. Keep the component, discard the filler if necessary, and begin the route to the nearest practical exfil. Searching another block only makes sense if a separate objective requires it and the added distance fits your leave-by time.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesExample: a rare weapon appears with a full pack
Compare the weapon with every current slot. Keep it if it materially improves the next deployment; remove the lowest-priority filler first. If taking it would force you to drop a progression item, the progression item wins unless you can secure the weapon in a protected slot and still reach extraction.

Example: the primary exfil is exposed
Do not keep calling the helicopter while opponents or hostile forces control the approach. Break line of sight, check the map, and move to the fallback while your reserve time remains. If no ordinary point is viable, evaluate whether the final exfil is reachable with your current armor, ammunition, and route rather than waiting passively.
Example: you have a Secure slot but no extraction window
Place the irreplaceable item in the Secure slot if the interface permits it, then prioritize survival and movement. The protected object is not a reason to chase additional loot; your other items still depend on a completed extraction.
Common failure modes and fixes
Filling every slot with low-value loot
Symptom: A mission item appears and nothing can be discarded without hesitation. Fix: Apply the triage order before opening more containers and keep at least one flexible slot whenever possible.
Waiting until the final exfil by habit
Symptom: You reach the last escape window with little armor, ammunition, or route flexibility. Fix: Set a leave-by time at deployment and use ordinary marked points while they are available.
Calling an exfil from an exposed position
Symptom: The helicopter becomes a predictable fight in open ground. Fix: Scout first, reload and repair, use cover, and relocate to a fallback when the approach is compromised.
Confusing Resources with intact Ingredients
Symptom: A crafting or FOB objective does not recognize what you collected. Fix: Check whether the object is an intact 3D Printer Ingredient that must remain in the Backpack until extraction, rather than an automatically broken-down Resource.
Redeploying before offloading
Symptom: A weapon or ingredient intended for later use is still treated as deployment gear. Fix: Move keepers into the Stash immediately after the extraction screen and verify the inventory before launching again.

Assuming every failure has the same recovery
Symptom: You expect ordinary backpack items to return because one protected item survived. Fix: Separate the Secure-slot item from the rest of the Backpack in your planning; protection of one object does not make the remaining contents permanent.
Pre-deployment and exfil checklist
- Write one sentence defining a successful run.
- Choose a primary exfil, a fallback, and a leave-by time.
- Reserve Backpack space for the mission item or ingredient.
- Identify the one item that belongs in a Secure slot, if your backpack has one.
- Carry enough armor, ammunition, and healing capacity for the route and helicopter sequence.
- Reassess the plan after every major pickup, map change, or hostile encounter.
- Leave when the marginal value of another container is lower than the risk of losing the haul.
- After extraction, move intended keepers into the Stash before redeploying.
The central discipline is simple: valuable loot is only valuable to your future deployments after you have completed the extraction that carries it forward. Build the exit into the run from the first minute, and treat every extra room as a choice with a measurable downside.
