Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStart with the display, idle time and apps that keep working in the background. These changes reduce power use without imposing a system-wide performance limit. In Windows 11, begin at Settings > System > Power & battery > Energy recommendations; available recommendations depend on your laptop’s hardware. Microsoft’s Windows 11 guidance describes the relevant controls.
Make the highest-impact changes first
Display brightness and time spent with the screen on are useful first targets because they can reduce power use while your apps continue running normally. Microsoft’s 2021 technical overview says a mobile computer’s display can use up to 40 percent of overall system power; that is a general reference, not a measurement for every laptop. Microsoft Learn: Managing Battery Life and Power Consumption Overview.

- Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Energy recommendations on Windows 11 and review the suggested changes. The page may not show every option on every device.
- Lower brightness to a level that remains comfortable to read. If the display is hard to see, raise it again; there is no useful saving if the setting makes your laptop difficult to use.
- Shorten the on-battery time before the screen turns off and the device goes to sleep. Keep plugged-in timings separate if you want them to remain longer.
A lower refresh rate can also use less power on supported displays, but motion will look less smooth. If your laptop has an OLED screen, dark mode may reduce display power; do not assume it will have the same effect on other panel types.
Choose a power mode that fits the work
Windows power mode is a trade-off, not a single setting that improves both runtime and speed. Microsoft describes the choices as better battery life, better performance or a balanced experience. Change the power mode for your Windows PC.
#1 Best Overall
- Ultra-Portable: Slim, portable, and light weight allowing you to protect your investment wherever you go
- Ergonomic Comfort: Doubles as an ergonomic stand with two adjustable height settings
- Optimized for Laptop Carrying: The metal mesh provides your laptop with a stable laptop carrying surface
- Ultra-Quiet Fans: Three ultra-quiet fans create a noise-free environment for you
- Extra Usb Ports: Extra USB port and power switch design allows for connecting more USB devices. Warm Tips: The packaged cable is USB to USB connection. Type C connection devices need to prepare an Type C to USB adapter
| Mode | When it fits | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Best power efficiency | Routine unplugged work when conserving charge matters most. | Prioritizes efficiency; depending on the workload and device, responsiveness may feel reduced. |
| Balanced | When efficiency matters but a task feels less responsive in the more efficient mode. | Balances battery use and performance. |
| Best performance | When a demanding task needs it and power is available. | Uses more power, drains the battery faster and may make the laptop warmer. |
To change it, open Settings > System > Power & battery and select a mode under Power mode. The choices and labels depend on the laptop and its selected power plan; if the setting is missing, use the options your device provides rather than assuming all three modes are available.
Find apps that are using power in the background
Instead of disabling background activity everywhere, look for apps that are consuming power and decide whether each one needs to keep syncing or refreshing when you are not using it.

- Dual USB Hub: With a built-in dual USB hub, the laptop fan enables you to connect additional USB devices to your laptop, providing extra connectivity options for your peripherals. Warm tips: The packaged cable is a USB-to-USB connection. Type C connection devices require a Type C to USB adapter. Please plug the cooling pad's USB cable into a 5V 1A adapter for best performance; otherwise, the fans may fail to spin or run at very low speed.
- Whisper-Quiet Operation: Enjoy a noise-free and interference-free environment with super quiet fans, allowing you to focus on your work or entertainment without distractions.
- Enhanced Cooling Performance: The laptop cooling pad features 5 built-in fans (big fan: 4.72-inch, small fans: 2.76-inch), all with blue LEDs. 2 On/Off switches enable simultaneous control of all 5 fans and LEDs. Simply press the switch to select 1 fan working, 4 fans working, or all 5 working together.
- Ergonomic Design: The laptop cooling stand also serves as an ergonomic stand, offering 6 adjustable height settings that enable you to customize the angle for optimal comfort during gaming, movie watching, or working for extended periods. Ideal gift for both the back-to-school season and Father's Day.
- Secure and Universal Compatibility: Designed with 2 stoppers on the front surface, this laptop cooler prevents laptops from slipping and keeps 12-17 inch laptops—including Apple Macbook Pro Air, HP, Alienware, Dell, ASUS, and more—cool and secure during use.
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Battery usage and review the apps using the most power.
- For an app that does not need background updates, open its app-specific background permissions and restrict background activity where Windows offers that control.
- If the laptop feels sluggish or drains unexpectedly, use Task Manager > Processes and Performance to look for resource-heavy work. Close only apps you recognize and do not need.
Do not disable security, update or system services as a battery-saving shortcut. For a graphics-heavy app, Windows may offer a per-app power-saving graphics preference, but changing it can affect that app’s graphics performance.

Use Energy saver when its trade-offs suit you
On Windows 11 version 24H2 and later, Energy saver replaces Battery saver. It can dim the display, change syncing and limit background activity. Microsoft documents a default 30% display-brightness reduction, which users can toggle; that figure describes the feature’s default behavior, not a guaranteed battery-life improvement. Check whether the battery itself has lost capacity
If your laptop still runs for much less time than expected after reviewing settings, check its battery report before assuming a setting is to blame. In an elevated Command Prompt, run:

powercfg /batteryreport
Open the HTML report at the file location shown in the command output and review Installed battery, Recent usage and Battery usage. The report provides battery information and estimated capacity; it does not identify a universally compatible replacement part. If replacement seems necessary, confirm the exact laptop model, part compatibility, service requirements and whether the battery is user-replaceable before buying or arranging repair.
Protect long-term battery health separately from daily runtime
Settings that save power during today’s session do not restore capacity already lost through battery aging. Microsoft’s battery-care guidance says lithium-ion capacity declines with charge-discharge use and recommends avoiding frequent deep discharges, keeping charge roughly between 20% and 80% when practical, using Smart charging if available and avoiding high heat. These are longevity measures, not a promise of a specific number of extra hours per charge. Microsoft Support: Caring for your battery in Windows.

For long-term storage, Microsoft advises leaving the device at around 40%–60% charge in a cool, dry place and checking it periodically. If the battery is visibly swollen, stop using the device immediately. Handle it cautiously and do not press, puncture or open the battery; seek appropriate service.
Windows version notes
Energy recommendations and other Settings options vary with Windows release, laptop hardware and sensors. Windows 11 paths in this article may not match every PC exactly. Windows 10 can still function, but Microsoft ended support on October 14, 2025; it no longer receives free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance or security fixes from Microsoft. Microsoft: Windows 10 support ends on October 14, 2025.
Microsoft has also reported that, in its browser testing on Windows 10, Microsoft Edge lasted 36–53% longer per charge than Chrome, Firefox or Opera while browsing. The support page does not state the year, and the result is a Microsoft-reported test with a Windows 10 browsing scope—not an independent, current Windows 11 benchmark or a result for other workloads.
