Yes—on supported Galaxy S23 models, you can use one physical Nano-SIM and one eSIM at the same time. The practical difference is how the second line is provided: a physical SIM is a removable card, while an eSIM is activated digitally. Compatibility depends on your exact S23 model, country, carrier and plan; neither SIM type is established as faster or better for reception or battery life.
What dual-SIM means on a Galaxy S23
Samsung says the S23 series can use one physical SIM and one eSIM simultaneously. Samsung’s US Verizon specification likewise identifies the Verizon Galaxy S23 variant as Dual SIM with a Nano/eSIM slot type. That specification applies to the version it describes; it does not establish that every regional model has a tray for two physical cards.

Samsung also says multiple eSIM profiles can be stored on the phone, but only one eSIM profile can be active at a time. A saved profile is not an active line: storing several profiles does not mean they all provide service simultaneously or that every combination is supported on every S23 variant. What changes when you choose eSIM or a physical SIM?
| Consideration | Physical Nano-SIM | eSIM |
|---|---|---|
| How it is provided | A removable card inserted in the phone’s SIM tray. | A carrier-provisioned profile added digitally; no second plastic card is inserted. |
| Moving service | You can move the card by removing it and inserting it in a compatible phone. | Moving or reactivating service depends on the carrier’s transfer and activation procedures. |
| What you need | A compatible card and access to the SIM tray. | Carrier and plan support for eSIM on your specific device, plus the carrier’s activation method. |
Either can be used as one of the two lines in a supported physical-SIM-plus-eSIM setup. This can let you keep one number while adding a work, travel or second-carrier line, but do not assume a particular travel plan or carrier will work with every S23 model. The line chosen for mobile data—and the line used for calls or messages—depends on the phone’s settings, carrier configuration and plan. AT&T’s S23 setup guide, for example, tells customers to choose a SIM for mobile data.

Check whether your S23, carrier and plan are compatible
eSIM availability is not universal. Samsung says carrier support is required and notes that eSIM support varies by country and carrier. The phone may also need to be unlocked or accepted for eSIM service by its carrier. Samsung’s worldwide carrier directory cautions that model and carrier availability varies by country, so a carrier being listed does not by itself guarantee support for every plan or model.

- Find the phone’s exact model code and identify the country or market it was sold for.
- Ask the carrier whether that specific model is eligible for eSIM and whether your plan supports it.
- Check whether the phone must be unlocked or carrier-approved before you add a line.
- Confirm the intended dual-SIM arrangement with the carrier; do not infer two physical-SIM support from a specification listing Nano/eSIM.

Add an eSIM to the Galaxy S23
- Obtain eSIM service and activation details from your carrier. Depending on the carrier, this may be a QR code or an app-based process.
- On the phone, open Settings > Connections, then open SIM Card Manager or SIM manager. Menu wording can vary by software version and region.
- Tap Add SIM or Add eSIM, then choose the QR-code option if your carrier supplied a code. AT&T’s S23-specific path is Settings > Connections > SIM manager > Add eSIM > Scan QR code.
- Follow the onscreen instructions. If your carrier did not provide a QR code, check whether its app is required to obtain or activate the plan.
- After activation, use the SIM manager settings to select the line for mobile data and configure the available line preferences.
Samsung’s regional instructions and AT&T’s S23 guide provide these paths; the carrier’s procedure controls how its plan is provisioned. [Samsung setup guidance] [AT&T Galaxy S23 setup instructions]

If eSIM activation does not work
Before retrying, check the common eligibility and setup causes Samsung identifies:
- Carrier or plan restriction: Confirm that the carrier offers eSIM for your exact S23 model and plan.
- Device eligibility: Ask whether the phone must be unlocked or otherwise approved for eSIM service.
- Activation method: Make sure you have a valid carrier QR code, or use the carrier app if that is the required route.
- Connection or scan problem: Ensure the phone has network connectivity during setup and retry scanning if the QR code is not recognized.
If those checks do not resolve it, contact the carrier that issued the plan; it controls the activation process. Samsung lists carrier restrictions, unsupported plans, connectivity issues and QR-scanning problems among possible causes. [Samsung eSIM troubleshooting guidance]
