Recent U.S. reports name different leaders depending on whether they measure users’ ability to complete basic tasks, network availability, or coverage experience. To choose reliably, compare each carrier at the places you actually use your iPhone—especially home, work, and regular routes—rather than treating a national ranking or coverage map as a promise about your signal.
What “coverage” and “reliability” mean
These terms describe related but different things. A carrier may report service over a broad area without giving you dependable reception inside a particular building. And a fast connection is not necessarily available everywhere you need it.

- Coverage describes where a network is reported to reach. Traditional coverage measures may estimate land area or population covered, which does not necessarily match an individual customer’s experience.
- Reliability concerns whether users can connect and complete tasks. Opensignal defines its Reliability Experience metric as users’ ability to “connect to and successfully complete (basic) tasks on operators’ networks.” Opensignal
- Availability is a separate reported measure; it should not be read as a speed result or a verdict on indoor reception.
- Speed and 5G experience matter for bandwidth-intensive use, but are not interchangeable with reliable basic connectivity.
What recent U.S. reports say about the three carriers
The results vary by metric and measurement period. They are useful context, not a direct prediction for a particular iPhone at a particular address.

|---|---|---|
| Opensignal U.S. report, January 2025 | T-Mobile and Verizon tied for Reliability Experience at 898 points on a 100–1,000 scale. Verizon led Coverage Experience with 9.6 points on a 10-point scale. | The reliability tie and Coverage Experience award are different measures; neither establishes which carrier works best inside your home or workplace. Opensignal report |
| Opensignal U.S. report, June 2025 | AT&T Availability was 99.6% and Verizon Availability was 99.5%. T-Mobile won several experience and consistency measures, including Reliability Experience. | Availability is not an overall reliability ranking, speed comparison, or indoor-coverage verdict. The figures apply to this report’s period and metric. Opensignal report |
| Opensignal U.S. report, January 2026 | The report describes a 90-day measurement window from September 1 to November 29, 2025. | The available information here does not establish a carrier ranking from this report, so it cannot support a current winner claim. Opensignal report |
These findings are not necessarily contradictory: they cover different measures and reporting periods. A national award can help frame a comparison, but it cannot tell you which carrier has the strongest signal in a specific building, along a commute, or in a rural area.

How to check which carrier works where you live
- Check your important locations on all three maps. Search your home, workplace, regular destinations, and the routes you travel. Use the FCC National Broadband Map as an additional view alongside the AT&T coverage map, Verizon coverage map, and T-Mobile coverage map.
- Interpret the maps as screening tools. The FCC map uses provider-reported 3G, 4G, and 5G coverage and represents expected connectivity outdoors or in a moving vehicle; it does not show indoor coverage. FCC challenge tests must also be outdoors or in a moving vehicle. FCC map guidance
- Check your exact iPhone model. Confirm compatibility with the carrier and relevant 5G service before switching. A carrier’s 5G layers are not supported by every device; Verizon notes that not all 5G devices support all 5G Ultra Wideband spectrum. Check the carrier’s device-compatibility information for your model rather than assuming support.
- Seek local evidence. Ask people who use each network at the addresses and along the routes that matter to you. Their experience can help fill in what an outdoor coverage estimate cannot show.
- Test before moving your primary number, if a suitable trial or eSIM test is available. Availability and terms vary, so confirm the current offer and whether it can test the places and service you care about.
Why a coverage map cannot guarantee iPhone reception
Maps describe expected or approximate coverage, not a guaranteed connection at every point. The FCC says its map does not show indoor coverage. AT&T describes its map as approximate outdoor coverage and says actual coverage may vary and is not guaranteed. Verizon gives similar outdoor-coverage and no-guarantee caveats. AT&T map caveats · Verizon map caveats
That distinction matters most if you need service inside a home, office, or other building. A map may indicate outdoor service nearby while leaving your indoor experience uncertain. Check the places where losing service would be consequential, not just a broad region or a single point on a map.

Which carrier should you choose?
Choose the carrier that performs best at your own key locations with your exact iPhone model. Use national reports to understand how different networks performed on defined measures, then use maps and local experience to narrow your options. If coverage is the deciding factor, prioritize dependable connectivity where you spend time over a national award, a 5G label, or a speed result alone.
