Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Anthropic then emails a download link to your account address. You must remain signed in to download it, and the link expires 24 hours after delivery. The resulting archive can be imported directly into Gemini, or its conversation JSON can be uploaded to a new ChatGPT conversation for reference. Neither route recreates your old Claude account, subscriptions, sidebar, memories, or workspace settings.
What you can export, and who can request it
Anthropic says individual Free, Pro and Max users with active accounts can export account information and conversation history. The export request is available in the web app and Claude Desktop; Claude’s mobile apps cannot start an export. Team and Enterprise accounts have additional administrator controls.

| Account type | Where to request the export | Important condition |
|---|---|---|
| Individual Free, Pro or Max | Claude web app or Claude Desktop: Settings > Privacy > Export data | The account must be active, and the download requires a sign-in to that account. |
| Team member | Claude web or Desktop, if enabled by the organization | An owner may need to enable member exports. A member’s personal export does not include the contents of files that member uploaded, according to Anthropic’s Team export documentation. |
| Enterprise Primary Owner | Organization settings > Data management | The Primary Owner handles organization-level exports and policies. |
An export is an archive of account and conversation data, not a portable copy of every feature in Claude. Keep that distinction in mind before you choose a destination: an assistant can read conversation records without being able to recreate Claude’s projects, integrations, billing relationship, or interface state.
Before exporting: protect the data and avoid an irreversible mistake
- Export first, delete later. Anthropic warns that deleting the account removes access to saved chats. Do not make the deletion request until you have downloaded and checked the archive.
- Use the correct account. If you have personal and work Claude accounts, confirm the profile and email address shown in the signed-in session before requesting or downloading.
- Prepare private storage. The ZIP and JSON files contain conversation and account information. Save them in a private, encrypted location with access limited to the people who are allowed to see the content.
- Decide what really needs to move. A complete archive may contain years of casual conversations. Selecting only work, research or project threads reduces upload size and limits what you disclose to another provider.
- Preserve original documents separately. Team and Enterprise personal exports may omit uploaded file contents. Keep copies of source documents you still have the right to use, then re-upload only documents allowed by the destination’s policy.
Step-by-step: request and download your Claude export
- Open Claude on the web or desktop. Sign in to the account whose data you want to preserve. Do not use the mobile app for this request; mobile cannot initiate an export.
- Open Settings. Select Privacy, then choose Export data. Team members who do not see the option should ask an owner whether member exports are enabled. Enterprise Primary Owners should use Organization settings > Data management instead.
- Submit the request. Anthropic processes the request rather than presenting the archive instantly. Leave the account active while you wait for the delivery message.
- Watch the account email. Anthropic sends a download link to the email address associated with the account. Check spam or quarantine folders if the message is not visible.
- Stay signed in and download promptly. Open the email link while signed in to the same Claude account. The link expires 24 hours after delivery. Download the ZIP during that window and place it in your private storage.
- Inspect the archive before changing the account. Confirm that the ZIP opens, that conversation data is present, and that the files you care about are represented. Keep this local backup until the destination assistant has the material you actually need.
If the download link expired
An expired link cannot be extended. Return to Settings > Privacy > Export data and request a new export, then use the replacement email within its 24-hour window. If you are an Enterprise Primary Owner, repeat the request from Organization settings > Data management.

If you cannot find Export data
First verify that you are using Claude on the web or Desktop, not a mobile app. For a Team account, the organization owner may have disabled member exports. Enterprise users should confirm that the request is being made by a Primary Owner through the organization data-management area. These account-level controls are different from a missing browser setting.
What the export can and cannot preserve
The archive gives another assistant source material, but it is not an account clone. Conversation text can usually be searched, summarized or used as context after import. Account-level state is different: provider-specific subscriptions, workspace membership, projects, integrations, custom instructions, memories, uploaded assets and the old conversation interface do not automatically follow the archive.
| Item | Expected result when moving providers |
|---|---|
| Conversation text | Available as imported threads in Gemini or as reference data in ChatGPT, depending on the workflow. |
| Claude sidebar and original thread layout | Not recreated by the documented ChatGPT workflow; Gemini organizes imported threads in its own interface. |
| Subscription and billing | Not transferred. Set up billing separately with the destination provider if needed. |
| Workspace or team membership | Not transferred. An administrator must provision access in the destination workspace. |
| Custom instructions, memories, GPTs, projects and integrations | Not transferred through the documented ChatGPT reference method; plan to configure equivalent features manually. |
| Uploaded file contents | May be absent from a Team or Enterprise member’s personal export. Preserve permitted source files separately. |

Import the ZIP
- Open Gemini and go to Settings and help > Import memory to Gemini.
- Choose Import chats.
- Select the Claude-exported
.zipfile from your secure storage. - Wait for Gemini to process the archive, then open the imported conversations and verify that the important threads are present.
Google’s 2026 instructions set a 5 GB file-size limit and allow up to five ZIP uploads per day. Those are upload limits for this documented import flow, not a promise that every conversation will fit in one archive. If your export is larger than 5 GB, divide the material into appropriate ZIP files and schedule the uploads across days while retaining the untouched original.
What Gemini does with imported threads
Gemini organizes imported conversations so they can be searched, referenced and continued. The threads live in Gemini’s organization and controls, not as a visual copy of Claude’s sidebar. Review several long and short conversations after processing; a successful upload confirms receipt of the archive, while spot-checking confirms that the conversations you care about are usable.
Transfer preferences separately
Chat history does not always express preferences clearly. Google describes a separate method: ask the old assistant to produce a concise summary of your preferred tone, formatting, technical background, recurring constraints and working style. Copy that summary and paste it into Gemini’s memory settings. Treat the summary as editable instructions, not as an authoritative transcript; remove secrets, confidential details and outdated preferences before saving it.

Use a Claude export in OpenAI ChatGPT
OpenAI’s documented method is a reference upload rather than a native account migration. ChatGPT can read the uploaded conversation data in a new personal conversation, but it does not turn the historical records into independent chats in the old sidebar.
Prepare the conversation data
- Unzip the Claude export in a private local folder.
- Locate the conversation JSON. If the export is large, look for the numbered JSON files produced when the data is split into multiple parts.
- Decide which conversations are necessary for your task. OpenAI’s guidance allows uploading only the conversations needed for reference when the complete set is too large or unnecessarily sensitive.
- Keep the original ZIP unchanged as your backup; work from copies or selected files when preparing uploads.
Upload it for reference
- Start a new personal ChatGPT conversation.
- Use the attachment control to upload the selected conversation JSON or numbered JSON files.
- Tell ChatGPT what the files represent and what you want to retrieve, such as a project decision, a previous draft or a list of unresolved questions.
- Ask it to cite the relevant conversation date or thread title from the uploaded data so you can check its interpretation against the source.
This workflow gives ChatGPT access to the uploaded material in that conversation’s context. It does not merge accounts, recreate prior conversations as separate chats, restore Claude’s sidebar, transfer subscriptions, move workspace membership, or transfer custom instructions, memories, GPTs, files or other account settings.
When to upload everything versus a selection
Upload a focused set when you need an answer about one project, when the archive contains confidential material, or when file-size limits make a complete upload impractical. A broader set can help with questions that span many projects, but it also increases review work and the amount of sensitive information exposed to the destination. Keep a catalog of the files you selected so you know what ChatGPT could and could not have referenced.

Gemini versus ChatGPT: choose by the result you need
| Decision point | Gemini | ChatGPT |
|---|---|---|
| Import mechanism | Native documented flow: Settings and help > Import memory to Gemini > Import chats, using the Claude ZIP. | Manual upload of extracted conversation JSON, including numbered JSON parts for large exports. |
| How old chats appear | Gemini organizes imported threads for search, reference and continuation. | Uploaded data is reference material in a new conversation; the old sidebar is not recreated. |
| Published size or rate limit | 5 GB per file and up to five ZIP uploads per day, according to Google in 2026. | The cited workflow does not state a single Claude-import size or daily upload number; practical limits depend on the files and ChatGPT upload handling. |
| Preference transfer | Use a separately generated preference summary and paste it into Gemini memory. | Custom instructions and memories do not transfer through the documented reference upload; recreate them manually. |
| Account settings and subscriptions | Not transferred. | Not transferred; accounts and billing remain separate. |
| Best fit | You want a provider-supported Claude ZIP import and searchable, continuable imported threads. | You need an assistant to consult selected Claude conversations while working in a new chat. |
Why a full one-click migration is not available
Each assistant stores conversations, files, memories and account permissions in provider-specific systems. An export can standardize some text and metadata, but it cannot grant the destination the ability to recreate the source provider’s user interface or security model. Anthropic explicitly says an export cannot be imported into another personal Claude account. The documented Gemini and ChatGPT workflows therefore serve different purposes: Gemini accepts the Claude ZIP as an import, while ChatGPT treats extracted JSON as reference material.
Plan to rebuild the parts that are instructions rather than history. Re-enter your preferred response style, recreate project-level context, reconnect permitted services, invite yourself to any destination workspace and configure a new subscription if required. Do not assume that an imported transcript will automatically become a persistent memory or a project instruction.

- Download only from the email link sent for the correct Claude account, and only while signed in to that account.
- Store the ZIP and extracted JSON in encrypted, access-controlled storage. Do not leave an unencrypted copy in a shared downloads folder.
- Remove API keys, passwords, customer records, health information and confidential business material before uploading selected conversations.
- Read the destination service’s privacy, retention and workspace rules before sending work data. An employer’s policy may prohibit moving company conversations to a personal account.
- Upload the minimum necessary set. A smaller, curated import is easier to audit and less likely to expose unrelated conversations.
- Keep the original export until you have verified the destination copy and decided how long the backup should be retained.
- Preserve source documents separately when the export omits uploaded file contents, especially for Team and Enterprise member exports.
Troubleshooting common migration problems
The email never arrives
Confirm the account email, check spam and corporate quarantine folders, and verify that the request was made from the web or Desktop app. Team members should ask an owner to confirm that exports are enabled. If the account was deleted before the request completed, saved chats may no longer be accessible.

The link says it is invalid
The download link expires 24 hours after delivery. Request a new export and download it promptly while signed in. Do not forward the link as a substitute for signing in; the download is tied to account access.
Gemini rejects the ZIP
Check that you selected the actual Claude export ZIP, that it is no larger than 5 GB, and that you have not exceeded five ZIP uploads that day. If the archive is larger, prepare smaller valid ZIP files and upload them on separate days. Keep the untouched original in case you need to start over.
Gemini imported chats but a preference is missing
Conversation history is not a reliable settings file. Create a separate, privacy-reviewed summary of your preferences and add it through Gemini’s memory settings, as Google describes. Avoid copying secrets or temporary instructions that should not persist.
ChatGPT cannot answer from the upload
Check that you extracted the archive and uploaded the conversation JSON rather than the unopened ZIP. For large exports, include the relevant numbered JSON parts. Explain the file structure and ask a narrow question first; then verify the response against the original conversation. Upload only the files needed if the complete archive is too large.
Uploaded files are missing
A personal Team or Enterprise export may not contain the contents of files a member uploaded. Locate the original documents from an authorized source and re-upload only those the destination and your organization permit. A conversation mentioning a file is not proof that the file itself is present in the export.
Quick Recap
A practical migration plan
- Preserve. Request and download the Claude export before any account closure or deletion.
- Verify. Open the ZIP, identify the conversation JSON and note any important files that are absent.
- Curate. Separate high-value conversations from material you should not disclose or no longer need.
- Choose. Use Gemini for the documented Claude ZIP import and organized imported threads; use ChatGPT when reference access to selected JSON is sufficient.
- Rebuild. Recreate preferences, projects, workspace access, integrations and subscriptions manually in the destination.
- Validate. Test representative conversations, check dates and context, and confirm that the new assistant can answer the questions that motivated the move.
- Retain or dispose. Keep the local backup for as long as your privacy, legal and organizational policies require, then delete obsolete copies securely.
