Request a Character.AI data export while you can still sign in: on the web, open Profile → Profile Settings → Account → Manage Account & Data → Export Data; in the mobile app, open Profile → Settings → Legal & Privacy → Export Data. The request is not an instant download. Character.AI says processing can take 3–4 weeks, and the emailed download link expires seven days after it is sent. Because the link goes to the email associated with your account, preserving access to that inbox is part of protecting your chats.
This is the current official route for requesting a copy of account data. It is not a documented per-chat save or migration procedure, and Character.AI’s instructions do not promise a particular archive format or that every conversation will be included. If losing access is a possibility, submit the request early, keep your existing sign-in method available, and be ready to download the archive promptly when the email arrives.

How can I export my Character.AI chats?
Use Character.AI’s account-data export. Its current Help Center instructions provide two ways to submit the request: through the website or through the mobile app. The paths lead to an export request; the company does not say that one route produces a different archive, completes faster, or delivers the download in a different way. Choose whichever route you can use while signed in.

In the web flow, the final selection is followed by a confirmation pop-up explaining that an email will be sent once the export is ready. In the mobile flow, the Success banner indicates that the request has been submitted. Neither message means that the data has already been downloaded to your phone or computer. The next stage is processing by Character.AI, followed by delivery of a link to the account’s associated email address.
Both routes are documented as ways to request an account-data export. Character.AI does not describe different file contents, processing times, delivery guarantees, or archive formats for web and mobile. There is no reason in Character.AI’s published instructions to switch platforms in expectation of a more complete or faster export.
What happens after you submit the request?
Submitting the request starts the process; it does not immediately save a copy to your device. Character.AI’s Help Center estimates 3–4 weeks for processing. When the export is ready, the company says it will email a download link to the address associated with your account. The link is valid for 7 days from the time the email is sent, so download the file promptly rather than waiting until the end of that period.

These timings come from the official account-data export guide, updated October 8, 2026. Character.AI states, “Please note that exports can take 3-4 weeks to process.” It also says, “The link will be valid for 7 days from the time the email is sent, so be sure to download your data before it expires.” The first figure is a processing estimate, not a promised arrival date. The second is a deadline counted from when the email is sent, not from the day you happen to notice it.
- Before requesting the export: confirm that you can still sign in and can receive messages at the email address associated with the account. The request depends on account access, and delivery depends on that email address.
- While it is processing: retain access to the account’s existing sign-in method and check the associated inbox for the export message. Checking spam or junk folders is a sensible way to avoid overlooking an email, but it does not change the stated processing estimate or extend the link’s validity.
- When the email arrives: follow its download link as soon as practical and save the downloaded data somewhere you control. Do not assume that the link will remain available after its seven-day validity period.
Starting early matters because the two parts of the timeline create different risks: the processing period may be several weeks, while the download period is only seven days after the email is sent. If you are close to losing account access, requesting the export now is safer than waiting for the last day. But the official instructions do not say that an urgent request can be expedited, and they do not give a guaranteed completion date.
The guide identifies the associated email as the delivery address. It does not describe an alternative delivery channel, such as a second email address, direct download from the app before processing finishes, or delivery to another account. Do not plan on receiving the link somewhere other than the account email unless Character.AI confirms a different arrangement for your case.

Will the export include every chat, and what file will it be?
Character.AI says users can request a copy of account data, but its current export instructions do not specify the archive’s file format, enumerate the fields it contains, or guarantee that every conversation appears. They also do not establish how media attachments are represented. Character.AI’s published instructions therefore do not support promising a JSON or HTML file, a complete transcript of every chat, a particular structure for images or other media, or an archive that can be imported into another service.
This limitation matters if you are trying to preserve a specific conversation rather than simply request the account export. The official guide describes a general account-data request, not a control for selecting individual chats or downloading a named conversation. It does not confirm that every chat will be in the resulting file, nor does it provide a separate current per-chat export procedure. You can request the account export, but you should not treat it as a guaranteed complete transcript archive until you have received and checked what Character.AI provides.
There are two different questions hidden in “How can I export my chats?” One is how to submit the official request; the web and mobile steps above answer that. The other is exactly what the resulting download contains and whether it captures a particular old or media-rich conversation. The current instructions do not settle the second question. That distinction prevents a common mistake: interpreting the word “export” as a promise of a universally complete, portable backup.
If preserving one specific exchange is essential, the official pages do not establish a separate supported saving method or guarantee for that individual chat. Avoid assuming that taking a screenshot, copying text, migration, or a future account transfer is equivalent to the official export. Those may be different actions, and Character.AI’s published instructions do not verify them as a Character.AI-supported backup workflow.
Secure your email and sign-in before access is at risk
The export can take weeks, so submit it while your account is accessible and keep control of the email and sign-in method attached to it. Character.AI’s Help Center article “How can I change my email address?”, updated August 28, 2026, says changing, updating, or removing an account email is currently unsupported. That makes the email already associated with the account important before and during the export process: it is the address where the download link is sent, and the published FAQ does not offer changing it as a workaround if access is about to lapse.

If you still have access to the original email, the FAQ advises continuing to use the original email-verification link or the Google or Apple sign-in linked to the account. Keep using the sign-in route that is already associated with your account; do not assume that adding a different email or creating a different login will preserve access to the existing account or its chats.
The same FAQ says that if you lose access to the email, you need a new account; data, characters, and chat histories cannot be transferred between accounts. A new account is therefore not a recovery or migration plan for the old account’s history. Nor does the FAQ say that support can move the old data into a replacement account. If you can still access the original email and account, prioritize making the export request before that access is lost.
It is useful to think of account access and export delivery as connected but separate requirements. You need to be able to reach the account to submit the request. Then you need access to its associated email to receive the link. Finally, you need to act within the seven-day link window to download the file. Losing either account access before submission or email access before delivery can undermine the plan; losing email access after a new account is created does not, according to the FAQ, make old chats transferable.
Is chat migration the same as exporting your data?
No. Character.AI’s old/beta retirement notice, updated September 24, 2024, described moving chats to the new site or app and offered a manual migration option for chats older than six months during that transition. That was historical guidance about the 2024 platform change. It is not the current account-data export process and is not a guarantee that chats can now be transferred from an account you are about to lose.

The distinction is practical. Migration guidance concerned moving chats as part of a particular transition between Character.AI experiences. The current export guide concerns requesting a copy of account data, then receiving a download link by email after processing. One should not be substituted for the other: the 2024 instructions do not explain how to request today’s export, and the current export guide does not say that its download can be imported into a replacement Character.AI account.

The six-month detail belongs to that historical transition notice only. It should not be read as a current rule about which conversations qualify for export, an age limit on the account-data download, or evidence that older chats can still be manually transferred today. If you are acting now because access may be lost, use the current web or app export route rather than relying on an old migration announcement.

Character.AI’s Help Center privacy overview, updated October 29, 2025, notes that data-access and portability rights may depend on region and points users to its download guidance. The account export instructions explain the company’s request process; they do not determine what rights apply to a particular person under local law. Without knowing a reader’s jurisdiction and applicable law, it would be inappropriate to make a legal conclusion about the scope or timing of that person’s rights.
For a practical export, follow the current account-data steps and use the stated delivery expectations. If your question is instead about a legal right to access or port personal data, consult the applicable regional information and the relevant current privacy guidance. Do not assume that the ordinary account export process answers every legal question, or that a legal right guarantees a particular file format or an immediate delivery.

Quick checklist before you lose access
- Sign in now: submit the export while you can access the account, using either the web or mobile route.
- Verify the destination: make sure you can reach the email address associated with the account. Character.AI says the link is sent there and currently does not support changing the account email.
- Keep the existing login usable: if you retain the original email, continue with its verification link or the linked Google or Apple sign-in, as the FAQ advises.
- Allow for processing: plan around the published 3–4-week estimate, not an immediate download.
- Watch for delivery: monitor the associated inbox, including its spam or junk folder, while the request is pending.
- Download promptly: the link lasts seven days from when the email is sent.
- Check the result: the official guide does not guarantee every chat, state the format, or detail media contents. Inspect the downloaded file rather than assuming it is a complete transcript archive.
- Do not count on account transfer: the email FAQ says data, characters, and histories cannot be transferred to a new account.
These are separate checks, not interchangeable safeguards. Submitting the request without access to the associated inbox leaves you unable to receive the link. Having the inbox but waiting until the account is no longer accessible may leave you unable to submit the request. Receiving the email but postponing the download risks the seven-day expiration. The safest plan is to start while both sign-in and email access are available, then follow through once the link arrives.
