What Character.AI has said about the service’s future
Character.AI’s October 12, 2026 announcement said the company had initiated a voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy process to facilitate a court-supervised sale. At the time of the announcement, the platform remained online and available. The company said it hoped the sale would produce an actionable proposal that would allow operations to continue. It also said that if no actionable bid emerged, the platform would be wound down.

Character.AI expected the sale process to finish by the end of November or possibly early December 2026. That was an expectation for the sale process, not a published shutdown date. The announcement does not establish that a sale has happened, that a shutdown is scheduled, or that the service has since changed status. These developments are time-sensitive, so check Character.AI’s current announcements before relying on the October 12 status.
The distinction matters: the company described two possible paths, not a confirmed outcome. A successful sale could allow service to continue, but the announcement does not promise that a buyer will keep every feature or existing account content unchanged. A wind-down is conditional on no actionable bid emerging, and the company did not give a date for one. The sale-process estimate should therefore not be treated as a countdown to the last day users can access their chats.

The same announcement said subscriptions remained active and billing was unchanged “for now.” Character.AI said it intended to notify subscribers in advance if a change affected paid features. That statement describes the situation at announcement time; it is not a guarantee about future billing or service availability.
What is confirmed—and what is not—about your data
The company’s shutdown announcement does not set out a plan for account content if the platform is wound down. It does not specify a final date to access chats, a shutdown-related export deadline, when data would be deleted, how long it might be retained, or whether characters or chat histories could be moved to another service.
Character.AI points users to its existing export and deletion controls and says its Privacy Policy remains in effect. Those are general tools and policies, not a shutdown-specific promise about what will happen to your content. In particular, the existence of an export feature does not establish that all chats and character details will be included, that the files will be usable in another service, or that users will have access to the feature after any closure.

The practical distinction is between what you can do while the account and export controls are available and what the company has not promised about a future closure. An export request is a prudent preservation step, but it is not a guarantee that an archive will be complete or ready before a possible wind-down.
There is also no stated comparison between the treatment of free and paid accounts’ chats, or between content created by a user and content they merely chatted with. The announcement addresses subscriptions separately, saying billing was unchanged “for now”; it does not say that a subscription changes data-retention rights or makes an export faster. Avoid assuming that a paid plan provides extra time or a different preservation route.

How to request a Character.AI data export
Character.AI’s current export instructions, published October 8, 2026, give different routes for the website and mobile app. Use the route for the interface you have:
- Web: Profile → Profile Settings → Account → Manage Account & Data → Export Data.
- Mobile app: Profile → Settings → Legal & Privacy → Export Data.
Character.AI says the request may take 3–4 weeks to process. When the export is ready, the company will email a download link to the address associated with the account. The link remains valid for 7 days from the time the email is sent. Because the stated processing window is measured in weeks, rather than hours or days, do not wait for a shutdown notice before starting if you want a copy.
- Submit the request through the account settings. Follow the web or app route above and complete the export request.
- Keep access to the account email. The export link is sent to the email address associated with your Character.AI account, so make sure you can receive mail there.
- Watch for the export message. Once Character.AI sends the link, the 7-day validity period begins. The company does not promise that a request will finish before a possible wind-down.
- Download the files promptly and retain a copy somewhere you control. Do not rely on the link staying available beyond its stated validity period.
The 3–4-week estimate is processing time, not a guarantee that every request will be finished within that window. Given the possible sale outcome and the lack of a shutdown-specific export deadline, the sensible sequence is to request a copy while the normal account controls are available, then promptly download it when the email arrives. If you cannot access the associated email, the published export instructions do not describe an alternate delivery method.
Character.AI’s instructions do not state the export’s file format, confirm that every chat or character definition is included, or promise that the files can be imported into another platform. Treat the export as a copy of data made available by Character.AI, not as a guaranteed, fully usable replica of your account. If certain conversations or character details matter to you, do not assume they are preserved in the export unless you can verify that in the files you receive.
Chats, created characters, and public characters are separate issues
A chat history and a character definition are different kinds of account content, and neither has a shutdown disposition described in the October 12 announcement. The company has not announced a way to transfer characters to another service or a way to preserve conversations there. Nor has it specified whether public-facing content would stay visible, disappear, or be handled differently from private account content after a wind-down.

An older Character.AI Help Center article explains that character privacy settings and posting options affect whether a created character is public or visible only to its creator. That is information about visibility while using the platform; it does not establish what would happen to either public or private characters if the service closed. A character being public today should not be treated as evidence that its page or definition would remain available after a shutdown.

The company’s shutdown announcement provides no separate chat retrieval deadline or assurance of continued access. If there are conversations you especially want to retain, requesting the export early is the available official preservation step, but the documentation does not guarantee that it will capture every desired conversation.
Why the 2024 chat migration is not a shutdown guarantee
In September 2024, Character.AI retired its old or beta site as it moved users to its new site and app. At that time, the company said recent chats were available on the new site or app, older chats might require manual migration, and chats would be preserved and migrated as part of that transition.
That was a move between interfaces while Character.AI continued operating. It does not answer what would happen if the company wound down the service altogether. The 2024 assurance should not be read as a promise that a future buyer would keep the platform running, that users would receive a migration window, or that old chats and characters would be moved elsewhere.
Should you delete your account?
Character.AI says account deletion is permanent and cannot be reversed. Its help page provides deletion routes on the web and in the app, but does not say whether a pending export request would survive deletion or provide a schedule for removing data from backups.

If preserving records is your priority, request and download the export before deleting the account. Deletion is an account-removal action, not a way to create or protect a backup. Since the company has not explained how deletion interacts with a pending export request, avoid starting deletion before you have retrieved the copy you want to keep.

Character.AI’s privacy FAQ says users may have rights to access, correct, or delete data, object to or restrict processing, or port data, depending on their region. It lists [email protected] as a privacy contact. The applicable rights and procedures vary by jurisdiction, and these general privacy rights do not answer the separate question of what the company will do with chats and characters after a wind-down.
If you need to exercise a privacy right, consult the current Privacy Policy and the rules that apply where you live. A request made through privacy channels should not be assumed to replace the export procedure or to guarantee that data will be delivered in a particular format.
A practical preservation checklist
- Submit the official data-export request now if you want a copy of your account data.
- Retain access to the account’s associated email and watch for the message containing the download link.
- Download the export within its 7-day validity period and keep the files somewhere you control.
- Inspect the files you receive rather than assuming they contain every chat or character detail you care about.
- Do not delete the account before retrieving the export if keeping a copy is important to you.
- Check for current company announcements and updated Help Center instructions, since the sale process, service availability, and account controls may change.
At present, the official guidance offers a way to request a data copy, but it does not guarantee a complete archive or explain the fate of content after a shutdown. The sale process could allow the service to continue; if it does not, the specific outcome for chats and characters remains unannounced.
