Exporting your data gives you a copy; it does not delete the copy held by the AI service. Request and download the archive, check that it contains what you need, and store it securely before deleting chats, activity, or your account. The steps differ by provider and by whether your account is personal or managed by work or school.
Before you start: identify the account and data you want to manage
First check which AI service you used and whether you signed in with a personal account or an organization-managed account. Work and school administrators may control access to exports or activity settings. Also decide whether you want to preserve a copy, remove particular conversations or activity, or delete the account itself; these are separate actions.

- Request an export using the provider’s official instructions below.
- Watch for the email or download notice and retrieve the archive before its link expires.
- Open the archive and confirm it contains the information you intended to keep.
- Store it somewhere private. Exported files may contain sensitive personal information; OpenAI advises keeping the download link and files secure (OpenAI’s export instructions).
- Separately delete the conversations, activity, links, or account you no longer want, using the relevant controls below.
An optional hardware-encrypted USB drive can provide offline storage, but it is not required; verify the drive’s encryption and compatibility rather than assuming any USB drive protects its contents.

How to export ChatGPT data
Personal accounts
While signed in, open Profile menu > Settings > Data controls > Export data and confirm the request. You can also use OpenAI’s Privacy Portal: choose Make a Privacy Request, identify the account as a consumer ChatGPT account, then choose Download my data. You may need access to the account email or phone to verify ownership. See OpenAI’s current export instructions for the latest flow.

OpenAI says an export can take up to seven days to arrive. The download link expires 24 hours after receipt, and you must download the ZIP while signed in to the same account that requested it. The export includes chat history and other relevant account data, but OpenAI describes eligible account data rather than promising a complete copy of every item associated with every product.
Business, Enterprise, or Healthcare workspaces
Self-service export is unavailable for these ChatGPT workspaces. Ask the workspace owner about organization-managed access. If a personal workspace is being removed or moved, request and verify the export before that happens.

How to export Claude data
Use Claude on the web or Claude Desktop. Open Settings > Privacy and start the export of user information and chat history, following Anthropic’s export instructions. The Claude iOS and Android apps cannot start an export, so switch to the web app or desktop client.
How to export Gemini data
Use Google Takeout while signed into the Google Account you used with Gemini. Select Gemini for Gems data. To include chats, generated media, uploads, and other Gemini Apps activity, select My Activity, then choose Gemini Apps in the activity data selection. Google notes that an archive may not include changes made after you request it and before it is created. Follow Google’s Gemini export instructions for current options.

Google Takeout can email a download link or deliver the archive to supported storage services. Archive creation may take from a few hours to a few days; Google says many people receive the link the same day. An emailed download link remains active for seven days. Downloading the archive does not remove the original data from Google’s servers.
How to delete chats or activity
Gemini Apps activity
For a personal Google Account, open Gemini Apps Activity from the Gemini app’s activity controls or Google My Activity. From there, review or delete selected activity, a time period, or all activity, and turn off Keep Activity if you do not want activity saved there. Google’s instructions are at Gemini Apps activity controls.

Turning off Keep Activity does not necessarily mean a conversation is discarded immediately: Google says conversations may still be held for up to 72 hours to provide the service and process feedback, even though they do not appear in Gemini Apps Activity. For work or school accounts, the Workspace administrator controls activity settings.

Check related Gemini data separately
Deleting activity may not delete every associated item. A shared public link may need its own deletion, and deleting data in a connected app does not delete the copy or conversation in Gemini Apps Activity. Review shared links, connected services, and related content separately. Google says deletion begins by removing data from view and then proceeds through deletion from its storage systems; do not assume every backup is erased immediately. ChatGPT controls are not interchangeable
In ChatGPT Data Controls, turning off Improve the model for everyone means new conversations are not used to train OpenAI models, but they can still remain in chat history. This setting is not an export or deletion command. See OpenAI’s Data Controls FAQ.

OpenAI directs users to account settings to delete an account. If you cannot sign in, submit a deletion request through the Privacy Portal. Account deletion is distinct from turning off model improvement or removing individual chats; review OpenAI’s current account deletion instructions for the steps and effects on account access or subscriptions.
What to expect after deletion
Deletion controls and retention rules vary by service, account type, and data category. The available provider instructions do not justify promising that deletion instantly removes every copy, including backups or data governed by an organization’s policies. Confirm the scope for the specific data you selected in the provider’s current official guidance.
