If Pokémon HeartGold or SoulSilver will not save, replacing a battery in the game card is not the right first step: these Nintendo DS games do not use a backup battery to retain save files. Nintendo identifies dirty game-card terminals as one possible cause of saving trouble and recommends cleaning them. The Pokéwalker is different: it has its own replaceable battery, which does not power the game card’s save.
Does HeartGold or SoulSilver have a save battery?
No. Nintendo says Nintendo DS and DSi software saves do not use backup batteries. HeartGold and SoulSilver are DS games, so a depleted cartridge battery is not the explanation for a save that will not persist or a missing save file.

Nintendo also says its backup-battery replacement service for game software has ended. Its support information does not name an approved third-party replacement provider. Avoid opening the game card or arranging a battery replacement based only on a saving symptom; the available official guidance does not establish that as a fix.

What to try when the game card will not save
Check the game-card terminals
Nintendo says dirt on a game card’s terminals can cause saving problems and recommends cleaning the terminals. Its guidance does not specify a cleaning product, tool, or step-by-step method, so use the game-card instructions and avoid applying an unverified cleaner or procedure. Nintendo’s HeartGold instruction booklet is the game-specific reference.

If cleaning does not resolve it
If the card still will not save or be recognized, the cause is not established by the symptom alone. Seek diagnosis from a qualified game-card repair specialist rather than assuming the save battery is faulty. Nintendo says its own game-software backup-battery replacement service has ended; no particular third-party service, price, or repair outcome is established here.

The Pokéwalker accessory uses a replaceable CR2032 coin cell; it is not the battery that retains a HeartGold or SoulSilver game-card save. Nintendo specifies a size-1 Phillips screwdriver for replacement. Before changing the cell, account for the accessory’s data: Nintendo warns that up to one hour of its game and step data may be lost during replacement.
