Explain the confirmed reason your role ended in one or two sentences, mention AI only if your employer identified it as a factor, then turn to a relevant contribution you made and what you can bring to the new role. Be accurate about whether you were laid off, had your position eliminated, or were terminated; those terms are not interchangeable.
Build a brief, truthful answer
A useful response has three parts: what happened, what you contributed, and why you are a fit for the position you are interviewing for. Keep the explanation factual and neutral. The U.S. Department of Labor advises candidates to answer directly and focus on achievements relevant to the job; Indeed’s layoff guidance likewise recommends keeping the explanation concise and positive.

- State the employment event. Use the description that matches what happened: your position was eliminated, the team was reduced, the function was consolidated, or you were laid off.
- Give the confirmed business reason. Mention AI or automation only if the employer identified it as a reason. If you do not know the reason, do not guess about management’s motives.
- Pivot to evidence. Name a specific result, responsibility, or skill relevant to the new position, then connect it to the employer’s needs.
For example, adapt this framework to your circumstances: “My position was eliminated during a restructuring as the company changed how it handled [specific work]. AI tools were part of that change [if accurate]. In the role, I [specific accomplishment or measurable contribution]. I’m now looking for a position where I can bring [relevant skill] to [employer’s need].” Replace the AI reference with the verified reason if AI was not identified as a factor. Treat this as a framework, not a script to memorize.

“Laid off” generally describes an employer ending employment for business reasons, such as a reduction or restructuring. Indeed specifically cautions against calling a firing a layoff. If your employer eliminated your role, saying “my position was eliminated” may be more exact than saying you were laid off. If you were terminated for performance or another individual reason, do not recast it as an AI-driven layoff.
#1 Best Overall
If you are unsure how to characterize the event, use neutral wording that you can support, such as “My employment ended after [confirmed event].” Answer directly if asked whether the decision was performance-related. Do not imply that every layoff is unrelated to performance; explain your own circumstances truthfully and offer relevant feedback, results, or references only when accurate.
Prepare for likely follow-up questions
“Why were you let go?”
Give the confirmed business explanation in one sentence, then describe what you owned or accomplished. Avoid presenting assumptions about private management decisions as fact.
“Was it because of your performance?”
Answer yes or no honestly. If it helps clarify your record, point to specific results or feedback you can substantiate. Do not claim that performance played no part unless you know that to be true.
“How do you feel about AI?”
Separate your view of the technology from the decision that ended your job. You can explain what you learned, or how you would use human judgment, domain knowledge, quality checks, and collaboration in the role you want. Keep claims about your AI experience grounded in what you have actually done.
Rank #3
“What have you done since?”
Describe genuine activities that are relevant, such as a course, project, contract work, caregiving, or job-search activity. Do not invent training or projects to make an employment gap sound busier.
“How many people were affected?”
Share a figure only if you know it and are allowed to disclose it. Avoid confidential or proprietary details about your former employer.
Connect your explanation to the role ahead
The strongest pivot is concrete rather than a broad claim about being adaptable. Choose one accomplishment that demonstrates a capability the target role needs, then briefly explain how you would apply that capability there. If the work changed because of automation, you might discuss a relevant process improvement or how you handled quality and exceptions—but only if that reflects your actual responsibilities.

Use the same standard for work samples: share them only when permitted and after removing confidential information. A brief, specific example is more useful than criticizing the former employer or speculating about what its AI systems could do.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is AI exposure proof that AI caused your job loss?
No. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics distinguishes occupational exposure to AI from evidence that a particular job disappeared because of it. Its 2025–35 employment-projections materials group occupations into four relative exposure categories using five external data sources. BLS says exposure does not establish job loss, productivity gains, automation probability, or wage effects, and it is not a forecast of employment growth or decline. Its FAQ notes that “higher exposure does not necessarily translate into AI-related changes in demand for a given occupation or that the occupation’s work is expected to be automated in the future.” These measures cannot prove why your individual position ended.
A separate, bounded U.S. finding also needs careful interpretation. In an April 2026 working paper, Lee C. Tucker of the U.S. Census Bureau Center for Economic Studies reported that regression-adjusted employment among workers aged 22–24 in the most AI-exposed quintile of industry-state cells declined 12% over the 10 quarters after ChatGPT’s introduction. The paper reports a hiring decline and discusses other factors, including earlier trend shifts around the COVID-19 pandemic. It is a working paper about a specific group and period; it does not establish the cause of an individual layoff.
Rehearse and find U.S. transition support
The U.S. Department of Labor recommends preparing a 30–60 second summary. Rehearse yours aloud with one relevant accomplishment and an example tied to the target job. You can bring copies of your résumé and a permitted, non-confidential work sample; printed materials are optional aids, not requirements.
