Neither is universally better. FPGA systems can make it easier to play several classic platforms through one configurable device, often with digital video options. Original consoles remain the direct reference for the behavior of a particular hardware revision, its native connections, and its quirks. The practical choice depends on the games, controllers, display, and setup you care about—and on how well the FPGA core supports them.
What an FPGA retro system does
An FPGA is a programmable logic device. A platform such as MiSTer loads a different core to configure the device for a target system—for example, an NES or Genesis. Loading another core changes the system being simulated; it does not turn the FPGA into a collection of original consoles. MiSTer’s core overview describes this model.

Because an FPGA can implement hardware logic in parallel, it offers a hardware-oriented alternative to software emulation. That approach alone does not prove that a particular core reproduces every circuit, game, peripheral, or timing quirk of the original. MiSTer founder Sorgelig makes the terminology distinction plainly in the project’s FAQ: “Currently, it’s hard to find a core that can truly be called a replica – most cores are based on more-or-less functional recreations rather than true circuit recreation.”
Where FPGA systems and original consoles differ
| What matters | FPGA system | Original hardware |
|---|---|---|
| Accuracy | Depends on the specific core, game, revision, and supported features. MiSTer says most console and computer cores have been compared with original hardware and directs users to individual core documentation for remaining issues. | Runs the physical console revision itself, including its hardware behavior and quirks. |
| Controllers and peripherals | Support depends on the platform, connection path, core, and accessory. Check the core and system documentation for the controller or peripheral you intend to use. | Accepts the console’s original accessories through its native connections, subject to the condition and compatibility of that hardware. |
| Video path | May provide configurable HDMI or analog output, depending on the system setup. HDMI requires scaling on MiSTer; output modes and display compatibility need checking. | Provides the outputs of that console and revision. Connecting to a modern display may require additional equipment or processing. |
| Convenience | One configurable platform can cover multiple systems, but requires setup and core-specific checks. | Requires the console and accessories for each system you want to play. |
| Original behavior | A core may reproduce much of a system’s behavior, but should not be assumed identical in every detail. | Is the direct reference for that particular physical console, its cartridges, accessories, and hardware-specific quirks. |
How accurate are FPGA cores?
Accuracy is core-specific, not a guarantee attached to the word “FPGA.” MiSTer’s core overview says most console and computer cores have been compared with original hardware “to a high level of precision,” citing audio-capture comparisons as one example. It also directs users to the relevant core’s documentation for known issues and limitations. That supports a qualified claim about the project’s validation; it does not establish identical behavior for every game, console revision, peripheral, or output mode.

The MiSTer FAQ says most of its cores are as accurate as, or more accurate than, other major FPGA offerings. That is the project’s own general assessment, not an independent guarantee for each game or a head-to-head measurement of the whole FPGA category against original consoles. If one title matters most, consult the current documentation for that title’s core and look specifically for reported compatibility or accuracy issues.
Does an FPGA system have lower input lag?
Not automatically. Input response is a chain: controller behavior and polling, core processing, video output, and display processing all contribute. A fast core cannot remove delay added by a controller or television. MiSTer’s latency documentation discusses these parts of the chain and does not claim one latency figure applies to every setup.

For context, that guide gives USB polling examples: at 1,000 Hz the worst-case polling interval is 1 ms and the average is 0.5 ms; at 125 Hz, the worst case is 8 ms and the average is 4 ms. Those are polling intervals, not end-to-end measurements of a complete console, controller, and display setup. The guide also notes that a 60 Hz frame is typically about 16 ms, which helps explain why missed or variable frames can matter in responsive games.

MiSTer output settings involve trade-offs
MiSTer describes its analog output as unbuffered, making its latency from the output perspective effectively identical to a real console. HDMI output must be scaled, and the selected synchronization behavior can trade latency against display compatibility:

These are MiSTer documentation descriptions of configuration behavior, not measurements for every television or every FPGA product. A meaningful comparison needs the same game, controller, output path, display, and relevant settings on both systems.

Digital output can be a major convenience if you want to connect to a modern screen, but a core’s output mode does not guarantee that a particular television or monitor will accept it. MiSTer’s native-resolution chart lists example modes such as NES at 256×224 and SNES at 512×224 in the versions shown. The chart warns that these values can change and are not a compatibility list for an individual display.

For MiSTer, check the core’s current video-mode documentation and your display’s supported input modes before relying on a specific native mode. HDMI scaling settings can affect compatibility and latency. Analog output may suit a setup built around an analog display, but the required output hardware depends on the particular MiSTer configuration; do not assume every system includes the same connections.

- Choose original hardware if your priority is the behavior of a particular console revision, original cartridges and accessories, or its native analog output.
- Consider an FPGA system if you value access to multiple systems from one configurable platform or want configurable digital output, and you are willing to check support for the relevant cores, games, controllers, and display.
- Compare the exact setup if response time is decisive. Include the controller, its connection method, the output and scaling path, and the display—not just the console or FPGA board.
- Check before buying or configuring if a specific game, accessory, video mode, or hardware revision is essential. The relevant core’s current documentation is more useful than a blanket claim that one platform is perfectly accurate.
The clearest evidence available for MiSTer is its own documentation about architecture, validation, output, and configuration. It is not an exhaustive independent test of every FPGA product against every original-console revision. Keep that distinction in mind when applying MiSTer-specific details to another FPGA platform.
