Play Red Dead Redemption 2 first, including its full epilogue, then play Red Dead Redemption. That follows the story from 1899 to 1911 and gives John Marston’s arc its intended handoff. Afterward, play Undead Nightmare only if you want a separate zombie-horror story. Red Dead Revolver is an unrelated frontier tale and can be skipped when your goal is the Redemption saga.
The correct story order at a glance
The connected narrative is best experienced in this sequence:

- Red Dead Redemption 2 main story — set in 1899 and centered on Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang.
- Red Dead Redemption 2 epilogue — finish it before moving to the next game.
- Red Dead Redemption — John Marston’s story in 1911.
- Undead Nightmare (optional) — a separate zombie-horror campaign played after Red Dead Redemption.
- Red Dead Revolver (optional) — a standalone western that is not part of the Redemption continuity.
This is the chronological order, not the order in which the games launched. The original release sequence was Red Dead Redemption in 2010 followed by Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2018. For a first-time story run, chronology provides the clearer progression.
Why Red Dead Redemption 2 comes first
It begins the connected saga in 1899
Red Dead Redemption 2 takes place in the dying days of the outlaw age. Its central character is Arthur Morgan, a senior member of the Van der Linde gang. The game establishes the gang’s relationships, ideals and internal conflicts before the events that define John Marston’s later life.
Take-Two’s October 26, 2018 launch announcement describes the game as an epic tale of honor and loyalty following Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang. That framing matters for the play order: you are seeing the earlier chapter of the world and the people who shape the 1911 story.
It supplies context for John Marston
Red Dead Redemption follows former outlaw John Marston after federal agents threaten his family and force him to hunt members of the gang he once called friends. Playing the 1911 game after RDR2 lets you approach John’s history with the preceding events fresh in mind, rather than treating those relationships as unexplained backstory.
Rockstar’s store description calls Red Dead Redemption the predecessor to the 2018 blockbuster Red Dead Redemption 2 in release terms, but the events themselves run in the opposite direction: 1899 first, 1911 second. The result is a prequel-first experience that turns the second game’s ending into a direct bridge to the first game.
The epilogue is part of the handoff
Do not stop when the main RDR2 storyline ends. Complete the epilogue before launching RDR1. The epilogue is the final piece of the 1899-era game and prepares the status quo that Red Dead Redemption continues in 1911. Starting the older game immediately after the main chapters would leave that transition unfinished.
What changes if you play in release order?
Release order: RDR1, then RDR2
Release order remains a valid way to play, especially if you want to experience the games as their original audiences did:
- Red Dead Redemption (2010)
- Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018)
That route preserves the surprises and assumptions of the 2010 game, then lets RDR2 function as a prequel that adds history to people and institutions you already know. Its drawback is structural: the earlier release does not introduce Arthur Morgan’s 1899 story first, and the emotional transition from RDR2 into RDR1 is no longer a continuous chronological handoff.
Chronology: RDR2, then RDR1
Chronological order gives you the broadest context before John’s 1911 mission. You follow the saga from the outlaw era’s decline through the later federal pursuit of Marston. The trade-off is that the prequel can reveal information that the 2010 release originally presented as mystery or history.

|---|---|---|---|
| Story chronology | RDR2 (1899) → RDR1 (1911) | First-time players who want the connected narrative in timeline order | Some information is presented as background rather than a surprise |
| Original release order | RDR1 (2010) → RDR2 (2018) | Players who want the historical release experience | The prequel follows the sequel in your personal play sequence |
For the question “Which one should I play first?”, choose RDR2 unless preserving the original 2010-to-2018 experience is your priority.
Step-by-step plan for a first story run
1. Start with the RDR2 main story
Begin a new Red Dead Redemption 2 playthrough and follow the main chapters. You can explore, complete side activities and pursue optional objectives, but keep the main story as your first priority if your goal is a clean narrative progression.
Because the game is the opening chapter in the timeline, avoid switching to RDR1 partway through. The older game is set more than a decade later and assumes that the earlier era has already passed.
2. Finish the RDR2 epilogue
Continue until the epilogue is complete. Treat it as required story content for this order, not as an optional postscript. It is the final section of the 1899 game and the point at which the narrative is ready to move to John Marston’s 1911 campaign.

After the epilogue, start Red Dead Redemption. Its premise is immediately later in the timeline: federal agents use John Marston’s family as leverage and compel him to pursue former gang associates. You are now playing the direct chronological follow-up rather than jumping backward to an earlier chapter.

4. Finish the main RDR1 story before optional fiction
Complete the principal Red Dead Redemption campaign first. Do not insert Undead Nightmare between the base game’s major story sections. The expansion is designed as a separate alternate scenario, so it works best once the main 1911 narrative is complete.
5. Add Undead Nightmare only if it appeals to you
Launch Undead Nightmare after RDR1 if you want a zombie-horror variation on the western setting. It is optional and is not needed to understand the two-game Redemption arc. You can omit it without creating a gap between RDR2 and RDR1.
Where Undead Nightmare fits
It is alternate fiction, not the next canon chapter
Undead Nightmare is best treated as a separate horror campaign built around the Red Dead Redemption setting. It does not replace the 1911 story and is not a prerequisite for understanding John’s main arc.
That distinction resolves the common “before or after?” question: play it after finishing Red Dead Redemption if you want to include it. Playing it earlier is not useful for chronology, because its premise is intentionally outside the main narrative progression.
Why waiting improves the experience
The base game establishes the characters, setting and stakes that Undead Nightmare reworks. Completing the main campaign first keeps the dramatic western story intact and prevents the alternate horror tone from interrupting it.
Where Red Dead Revolver fits
Red Dead Revolver is a separate frontier tale rather than a required entry in the Redemption continuity. It can be played before or after the two Redemption games if you simply want another western, but there is no chronology-based reason to place it between RDR2 and RDR1.

If your objective is to experience the connected Redemption saga, skip it until that two-game sequence is finished—or skip it entirely. Including it is a matter of interest in the broader western catalogue, not story completeness.

How to avoid common order mistakes
Do not confuse release order with story order
The 2010 release date of Red Dead Redemption does not mean its events happen first. The game is the later chapter in the internal timeline. The 2018 RDR2 is the earlier chapter despite launching later.
Do not stop before the epilogue
The epilogue belongs before RDR1 in a complete chronological run. Moving on as soon as the main RDR2 chapters end weakens the transition the order is meant to provide.
Do not treat Undead Nightmare as required canon
You will not miss essential information about Arthur or John by skipping the zombie campaign. Add it for its alternate genre and setting, not to fill a narrative requirement.
Do not use Red Dead Revolver as a missing prequel
Its separate status means it does not explain the Van der Linde gang, Arthur Morgan or John Marston’s connected storyline. It is optional from the perspective of the Redemption arc.

Platform and edition considerations
Current PlayStation listings
The PlayStation listing currently identifies Red Dead Redemption for PS4 and PS5. It also documents a bundle containing Red Dead Redemption, Undead Nightmare, Red Dead Online and Red Dead Redemption 2 Story Mode. Catalogue inclusion, price and regional availability can change, so check the store page for your account’s country before buying.
Best Value
- Printed on Highest Quality Poster Paper.
- Poster measures 16" x 24" inches
The availability note affects access, not the recommended order. If your edition includes both story campaigns, still complete RDR2 and its epilogue before beginning RDR1.
Online content is outside this story sequence
Red Dead Online is listed with the PlayStation bundle, but it is not one of the story chapters in the order above. You can treat it as separate multiplayer content and return to it whenever you choose without changing the single-player chronology.
Should you use an official guide?
A guide is optional. Players who want map references, mission context or completion help while beginning RDR2 can look for the Red Dead Redemption 2 Complete Official Guide, published by Piggyback. Confirm the edition and region before purchasing because listings can vary over time. A guide can support exploration, but it does not change which game comes first.

A spoiler-conscious way to choose your order
Choose chronology if you want the cleanest timeline
Select RDR2 → epilogue → RDR1 when your priority is understanding how the earlier outlaw era leads into John’s 1911 assignment. This is the recommended route for someone encountering both stories for the first time.
Choose release order if historical context matters more
Select RDR1 → RDR2 when you specifically want to reproduce the order in which players originally received the games. This approach highlights how the later title functions as a prequel to an already familiar story.
Add optional games only after the main arc
Whichever order you choose, keep Undead Nightmare outside the main sequence until RDR1 is complete. Keep Red Dead Revolver separate as well. That prevents optional material from obscuring the two-game narrative that the chronological recommendation is designed to preserve.
Recommended checklist
- Start with Red Dead Redemption 2.
- Complete the main story and the epilogue.
- Play Red Dead Redemption next.
- Play Undead Nightmare afterward only if you want its alternate zombie campaign.
- Treat Red Dead Revolver as a separate optional western.
- Verify your platform’s current catalogue, bundle contents, price and regional availability before purchasing.
Final recommendation
For a first-time player, the definitive order is Red Dead Redemption 2 (1899), including its epilogue, followed by Red Dead Redemption (1911). Add Undead Nightmare afterward as optional alternate fiction, and regard Red Dead Revolver as separate. This sequence follows the internal timeline and gives John Marston’s story the context established by Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang.
