Choose between an internal M.2 SSD and USB storage
PS5 owners are choosing between two fundamentally different kinds of extra space. The internal M.2 expansion appears in the console’s storage system and can hold games you download, update and play. USB extended storage is slower as a game location: it can hold PS5 games, but those games must be copied back to the console’s internal storage or an M.2 SSD before they can run. PS4 games can run directly from compatible USB storage.

| Reduce redownloading of PS5 games | USB extended-storage drive | Archive PS5 installations and restore them faster than downloading again | It is an archive, not a direct PS5 play location |
PlayStation’s own wording is unambiguous: “PS5 games are playable on M.2 SSD storage.” For USB storage, Sony says, “PS5 games can be moved to USB extended storage, but they need to be copied back to console storage or M.2 SSD storage to be played.”

Use Sony’s M.2 compatibility checklist before buying
A drive is not suitable merely because its product page says “NVMe” or “gaming SSD.” The drive, its heatsink and the console bay must fit together. Sony’s current support requirements are:
| Requirement | Supported specification | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Interface | PCI-Express Gen4x4 M.2 NVMe SSD, Key M | The expansion slot expects this electrical and physical standard |
| Capacity | 250GB to 8TB | Drives outside this range are not within Sony’s listed support limits |
| Supported form factors | 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110 | The number identifies the drive’s width and length class |
| Maximum width | 25mm, including cooling hardware | A wider heatsink or cover can prevent installation |
| Maximum length | 30mm, 42mm, 60mm, 80mm or 110mm, matching the listed form factor | The spacer and screw position must match the drive length |
| Maximum total thickness | 11.25mm including heat dissipation hardware: up to 8.0mm above the board and 2.45mm below | A tall heatsink can stop the expansion cover from closing |
| Sequential read speed | 5,500MB/s or faster recommended | This is Sony’s recommended target for the drive’s sequential-read rating |
| Cooling | A heatsink or other effective heat-dissipation structure is required | The drive must be able to shed heat in the enclosed expansion bay |
| SATA interface | M.2 SATA SSDs are not supported | An M.2 shape alone does not make a drive compatible |
Measure the complete assembly, not just the bare circuit board. A drive that is 22mm wide can still exceed the 25mm limit once its heatsink is fitted; the same applies to total height. If a drive already has a built-in heatsink, do not stack another heatsink on top of it. Stacking can exceed the thickness limit and prevent proper contact or closure.
Sony also cautions that matching the listed numbers does not guarantee that every third-party drive will work and that game performance may differ from the PS5’s internal SSD. Treat the table as a screening checklist, not an absolute performance guarantee.
How to select a practical expansion drive
Decide how much space you actually need
The supported range starts at 250GB and ends at 8TB. A 250GB drive adds room for only a modest number of large PS5 installations, while a multi-terabyte drive is more appropriate if you regularly keep several current-generation games installed. Capacity does not change the interface requirement: an 8TB drive still has to be PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe, physically fit and include effective cooling.

Search for the complete configuration
The clearest product description for this use is “PS5 compatible 2TB M.2 NVMe SSD with heatsink.” That wording signals the three details buyers most often miss: the console compatibility claim, the M.2 NVMe interface and included cooling. Verify the manufacturer’s dimensions against Sony’s limits instead of relying only on the word “PS5” in a listing.
Do not confuse an external SSD with an expansion-bay SSD
An external USB solid-state drive can be fast and useful, but it remains USB extended storage. It does not become an internal M.2 drive through a USB adapter, and it cannot run PS5 games directly. For native PS5 play, the drive must be installed in the console’s M.2 expansion bay.
Install an M.2 SSD safely
The console must be completely powered off before you remove its cover or open the expansion bay. Rest mode is not sufficient. Set aside uninterrupted time because the first formatting operation erases data already on the new drive.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Update the console. Install the latest available PS5 system software before opening the hardware. This reduces the chance that an older system build will complicate the initial setup.
- Shut down fully. Use the power menu to turn the PS5 off, then wait until the power indicator has stopped flashing and is completely off. Unplug every cable.
- Let it cool and prepare the workspace. Leave the console long enough to cool, place it on a stable surface protected from scratches, and ground yourself against a metal object before handling the drive.
- Remove the model-specific outer cover. The cover-removal direction differs between PS5 models, so follow the procedure for your exact console revision rather than forcing the panel.
- Open the expansion bay. Remove the expansion-slot cover to expose the M.2 mounting point.
- Set the spacer for the drive length. Move the supplied spacer to the hole that matches the drive’s 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 or 22110 length.
- Insert the SSD diagonally. Align the connector and slide the M.2 SSD in at an angle until it is fully seated. Do not press down first or force the connector.
- Lower and secure the drive. Gently lower the free end onto the spacer and fasten it with the supplied screw. The board should lie flat without bending.
- Reinstall both covers. Replace the expansion-slot cover and the outer console cover. If a cover will not close normally, stop and recheck the drive’s width and total thickness; do not operate the console with a distorted panel.
- Reconnect and format. Reconnect the cables, power on the PS5 and follow the on-screen formatting guide. Formatting is required before the drive can be used and erases any data that was already on that SSD.
Set the new drive as the installation location
After formatting, the M.2 SSD appears in the console’s storage settings. To send future downloads there, open Settings > Storage > Installation Location and select the M.2 drive for the relevant game type. You can change the destination later if your internal or M.2 space becomes the priority.

To relocate games already installed on the console, open Game Library, highlight the game, press the Options button and choose Move Games and Apps. Select the destination M.2 storage and confirm. Moving changes where the installation lives; it does not create a second copy, so allow the transfer to finish before disconnecting power.
Updates and downloads follow the installation-location choice. Keep enough free space on the destination for the complete installation and its update process; a drive that is technically large enough for a game can still fail a transfer when almost all of its capacity is occupied.
Use USB extended storage for archives and PS4 games
USB storage is the lower-complexity option when your priority is inexpensive capacity, PS4 play or keeping PS5 installations available without downloading them again. Sony requires a SuperSpeed USB connection rated at 5Gbps or later and a capacity from 250GB to 8TB.
| USB requirement | Sony’s listed specification |
|---|---|
| Connection | SuperSpeed USB 5Gbps or later |
| Capacity | 250GB to 8TB |
| PS5 games | May be stored and moved, but must be copied to console or M.2 storage before playing |
| PS4 games | Can be installed and played directly from USB extended storage |
Connect the drive directly to a compatible PS5 USB port rather than through a USB hub. A hub adds another point of failure and is not the configuration Sony specifies for this use. When you are finished, use the console’s safe-removal control before unplugging the drive. Pulling the cable during a write can corrupt the file system or an in-progress game transfer.

Archive a PS5 game
- Connect and format the USB drive as extended storage when the PS5 prompts you.
- Open the game library or storage management controls and choose the PS5 game you want to move.
- Select the USB extended-storage destination and wait for the copy or move operation to complete.
- When you want to play it, move or copy the game back to console storage or the M.2 SSD, then launch it from that location.
USB archiving is useful when a game is large, your internet connection is slow or a game may return to your rotation later. It does not bypass the storage requirement for patches or the console’s need to have the playable copy on internal or M.2 storage.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How this helps before a future PlayStation
No confirmed next-generation PlayStation storage specification is established in the official pages considered here. That means no current M.2 model can honestly be promised as a guaranteed drop-in upgrade for an unannounced console. Physical dimensions, firmware rules, interface requirements and cooling arrangements could all change.
An internal upgrade is still a sensible purchase when it solves a current PS5 problem. A standard PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD may remain useful in other compatible computer or console hardware, but that is a possibility rather than a compatibility guarantee. Buy for the PS5 you own, keep the drive’s documentation and packaging, and treat any future-console reuse as a bonus.
Troubleshoot the common installation problems
The PS5 does not detect the M.2 drive
- Power the console down completely and remove the cover again; never reseat the drive while the console is running.
- Check that the SSD is PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe Key M, not M.2 SATA.
- Remove any protective film that blocks the connector, then reseat the drive diagonally until it is fully inserted.
- Verify that the spacer is in the hole matching the drive length and that the retaining screw holds the board flat.
- Confirm that the console software is up to date before retrying the format.
The expansion cover will not close
Remove the drive and measure the complete assembly. The 25mm width and 11.25mm total-thickness limits include the heatsink or other cooling structure. Do not add a second heatsink to a model that already includes one. Forcing the cover can damage the drive or the console.

The console asks to format again
The first successful setup requires formatting, and that process erases data on the drive. If the prompt returns after a failed installation, power down, check the seating and dimensions, then format only after confirming that no needed data remains on the SSD.
A PS5 game will not launch from the USB drive
This is expected behavior, not a fault. Sony states that “PS5 games can’t be played directly from USB extended storage.” Copy the game to console storage or the installed M.2 SSD before launching it. PS4 games are the titles intended for direct USB play.
A transfer or archive appears corrupted
Stop using the drive, reconnect it directly rather than through a hub, and use the PS5’s safe-removal control before disconnecting it again. Avoid unplugging during a transfer. If the console requires reformatting, remember that formatting deletes the stored games and other data on that extended-storage drive.

Quick Recap
A simple buying and setup checklist
- Choose an internal M.2 drive for direct PS5 play; choose USB extended storage for PS4 play or PS5 archiving.
- For M.2, confirm PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe, Key M, 250GB–8TB capacity and one of the five supported form factors.
- Measure width, length and total thickness with the heatsink installed: no more than 25mm wide and 11.25mm thick, with the correct length class.
- Look for a sequential-read rating of at least 5,500MB/s and effective cooling.
- Never use an M.2 SATA SSD in the expansion bay or stack a heatsink over a built-in heatsink.
- Update the PS5, shut it down completely, unplug it and ground yourself before opening the bay.
- Expect the first M.2 format to erase data already on the drive.
- Use Settings > Storage > Installation Location for future downloads and Game Library > Options > Move Games and Apps for existing installations.
- For USB, use SuperSpeed USB 5Gbps or later, stay within 250GB–8TB and connect directly without a hub.
- Safely remove USB storage before unplugging it.
- Do not assume today’s SSD will be compatible with the next PlayStation until Sony publishes that console’s specifications.
