To exclude a folder from OneDrive on Windows 11, change the account’s selective-sync settings—not the folder’s Free up space option. Open the OneDrive cloud menu, go to Settings → Account → Choose folders, then clear the folder you no longer want stored on that PC.
The folder and its files remain available in OneDrive online. This procedure only removes that folder from the local OneDrive directory on the selected Windows 11 computer.

Exclude a OneDrive folder from this Windows 11 PC
- Find the OneDrive cloud icon in the Windows taskbar notification area. It may be blue or white. If it is hidden, select the taskbar’s Show hidden icons arrow.
- Select the cloud icon and choose Help and Settings.
- Select Settings.
- Open the Account tab.
- Select Choose folders.
- In the Choose Folders window, clear the checkbox beside each folder you want to exclude.
- Select OK.
OneDrive will stop making the deselected folder available in the local OneDrive folder. It does not delete the cloud copy. You can still open the folder from OneDrive.com or the OneDrive mobile app.

If the OneDrive icon is missing
Start OneDrive manually:
- Open Start.
- Type OneDrive.
- Select the OneDrive app from the results.
Wait for the cloud icon to appear in the notification area, then follow the settings path above. If you have both a personal account and a work or school account connected, make sure you open settings for the correct account before changing Choose folders.

What happens after you clear a folder?
| Action | Result |
|---|---|
| Clear a folder in Choose folders | The folder is removed from this computer’s OneDrive folder but stays in OneDrive online. |
| Use Free up space | Removes the local download while keeping the item in the OneDrive folder structure. It does not exclude the folder from synchronization. |
| Move a folder outside OneDrive | Microsoft says the folder is removed from OneDrive.com and remains only on the PC. |
| Unlink this PC | Disconnects the entire OneDrive account from the computer, not just one folder. |
Selective-sync choices apply separately to each computer and account. For example, excluding Projects on one Windows 11 PC does not exclude it on another PC signed in to the same Microsoft account.
Folders you cannot exclude with Choose folders
Microsoft says some folders cannot be unchecked in the folder-selection window. These include:
- Documents
- Desktop
- Pictures
- Personal Vault
Documents, Desktop, and Pictures may be in OneDrive because PC-folder backup was enabled. That setting is separate from normal selective sync. To review it, open the OneDrive settings and look under Sync and back up → Manage back up. Do not use Manage back up as the ordinary control for excluding a subfolder such as OneDriveProjects2024.
Choose folders only works inside OneDrive
The Choose folders window lists folders that already exist inside the OneDrive hierarchy. It cannot add or control a folder stored elsewhere, such as:
C:Work- An external USB drive
- A second internal drive outside the OneDrive folder
If a folder is outside OneDrive, it is not part of that account’s OneDrive sync relationship in the first place.
Do not use Files On-Demand to unsync a folder
Files On-Demand and selective sync solve different problems:
- Choose folders: excludes a folder from the local OneDrive folder on this computer.
- Files On-Demand: keeps the folder in the OneDrive structure but avoids storing all of its contents locally.
- Free up space: removes a downloaded local copy while retaining the online item.
To remove a local download without excluding the folder, right-click the file or folder in File Explorer and select Free up space. This is useful when an item was accidentally set to Always keep on this device.

A file marked Available when online can still be opened. OneDrive downloads it before opening. If the download is unwanted or taking too long, open the OneDrive taskbar pop-up and select the X beside the downloading file.
Fix: “The file or folder already exists on OneDrive”
After changing selective-sync settings, OneDrive may show the message:
The file or folder already exists on OneDrive.
Microsoft’s first workaround is to delete the local copy. This does not delete the folder from OneDrive online when the folder has already been deselected. Check OneDrive.com first if the files are important, then remove the redundant local copy and allow the client to finish updating.
If your actual goal is to keep the folder only on this PC, move it outside the local OneDrive folder. Be careful: Microsoft states that doing this removes the folder and its files from OneDrive.com. That is the opposite of selective sync, which keeps the cloud copy.

The settings menu is similar for personal and work or school accounts, but the choices belong to separate accounts. Select the appropriate cloud icon or account before editing Choose folders.
SharePoint libraries and OneDrive for work or school can have an additional limitation. Microsoft’s library-specific procedure can stop synchronization for an entire synced library, but it does not provide a way to stop individual files or folders within that library through that procedure. The files remain in the previously synced local folder after the library is disconnected.
That documented library procedure uses the older or previous OneDrive sync app and follows this general path: select the OneDrive for work or school icon → Settings → Account → Choose folder, select the library, and choose OK. Current work or school installations may show different options. An organization policy can also hide settings; contact your IT administrator if the required controls are unavailable.

Alternatives when you want to stop more than one folder
Pause synchronization temporarily
Pausing is useful during a large download, presentation, or network problem, but it does not exclude a folder permanently:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Select the OneDrive cloud icon.
- Select Help and Settings.
- Select Pause syncing.
- Choose 2 hours, 8 hours, or 24 hours.
Quit OneDrive for the current session
To stop the client until you start it again, select the cloud icon → Help and Settings → Quit OneDrive. To run it again, open Start, type OneDrive, and select the app.
Unlink the entire PC
Use this only when you want to disconnect the account, not when you want to exclude one folder:
- Select the OneDrive cloud icon.
- Go to Help and Settings → Settings → Account.
- Select Unlink this PC.
- Confirm with Unlink account.
Unlinking does not delete the OneDrive data. The files remain accessible through OneDrive.com, but the account is no longer connected to that Windows 11 installation.
Uninstall OneDrive
Windows 11 can remove the client through Start → type Programs → Add or remove programs. Find Microsoft OneDrive, select its three-dot More menu, and choose Uninstall. Removing the app does not delete the files stored in the cloud.
Do you need a command or Registry change?
No. Microsoft’s supported Windows 11 procedure uses the OneDrive settings window and does not require Command Prompt, PowerShell, Registry editing, or an onedrive.exe command. If the menu looks different, check the OneDrive version under Settings → About; Microsoft notes that settings can vary between app versions.
FAQ
Does deselecting a OneDrive folder delete it?
No. Clearing its checkbox under Account → Choose folders removes the folder from that computer’s local OneDrive folder. The folder and its contents remain available in OneDrive online and in the mobile app.

What is the correct way to unsync one folder on Windows 11?
Select the OneDrive cloud icon → Help and Settings → Settings → Account → Choose folders. Clear the folder’s checkbox and select OK.
Does Free up space unsync a folder?
No. Free up space removes the local download but keeps the item inside the OneDrive folder structure. Use Choose folders when you want to exclude the folder from that PC.
Why can’t I uncheck Documents, Desktop, or Pictures?
Microsoft lists Documents, Desktop, Pictures, and Personal Vault among folders that cannot be cleared in Choose folders. Documents, Desktop, and Pictures may be controlled by PC-folder backup, which is reviewed under Sync and back up → Manage back up.
Will excluding a folder on one PC exclude it everywhere?
No. Selective-sync settings are per computer and per account. Other computers using the same OneDrive account keep their own folder-selection settings.
Can I exclude a folder on a USB drive?
No. Choose folders only controls folders already inside the OneDrive hierarchy. A folder elsewhere on the computer or on an external drive cannot be added through that window.
The Bottom Line
For a real folder exclusion, use OneDrive cloud icon → Help and Settings → Settings → Account → Choose folders, then clear the folder and select OK. The local copy is removed, but the cloud copy remains. Use Free up space only when you want to save disk space, and avoid moving the folder outside OneDrive unless you intend to remove it from OneDrive.com.
