Windows 11 has a built-in dark mode, and turning it on takes less than a minute. The supported route is Settings > Personalization > Colors; you do not need a registry tweak, PowerShell command, third-party app, or administrator account.
Turn on dark mode in Windows 11
- Press Windows key + I to open Settings. You can also open it from Start > Settings.
- Select Personalization in the left sidebar.
- Choose Colors.
- Open the Choose your mode menu.
- Select Dark.
Windows applies the change immediately. Supported parts of the interface, including the Start menu, taskbar, Action Center, File Explorer, Windows Console, and Settings, will use darker colors. Many Microsoft Store apps can also follow this preference.

Windows 11 can control the Windows interface and apps separately. This is useful if you want a dark taskbar and Start menu but prefer documents or other apps in a light theme.

- Open Settings > Personalization > Colors.
- Set Choose your mode to Custom.
- Set Choose your default Windows mode to Dark.
- Set Choose your default app mode to Light.

To make both Windows and supported apps dark, select Dark instead of Custom.
Make Microsoft Edge dark
Windows dark mode does not automatically force every webpage to use a dark background. Edge’s own interface has a separate appearance setting.
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Select the three-dot Settings and more (…) button in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Settings > Appearance.
- Under the appearance options, select the dark Theme.
Depending on the Edge version and the interface rollout on your PC, the available choices may be labelled Light, Dark, and System default. Choose Dark for a dark Edge interface, or System default if Edge should follow Windows.
This changes Edge’s controls, not necessarily the pages you visit. A website can remain white even when Windows and Edge are dark. On supported pages, open Immersive Reader, open its appearance controls, and choose a darker page theme.

Make Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or classic Outlook dark
Microsoft 365 has its own Office theme. Use these steps in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or classic Outlook:
- Open the Microsoft 365 app.
- Go to File > Options > General.
- Find the Office Theme menu.
- Select Black for the darkest Office interface, or Use system setting to follow Windows 11’s light or dark mode.
- Select OK.
In Word and Outlook, the Black theme may also change the document page or email background. To keep those backgrounds white, use the relevant option in File > Options > General:
- Word: Under Personalize your copy of Microsoft Office, select Never change the document page color.
- Outlook: Select Never change the message background color.
Why some apps or websites remain light
Windows dark mode is a color preference, not a universal switch. Individual programs can ignore it, provide their own theme menu, or offer no dark mode at all. Look in the app’s settings for options named Theme, Appearance, Color mode, or Dark mode.
Websites are controlled separately from the browser interface. A site may ignore the browser’s darker-theme preference and continue using a light design. In that case, check whether the site has its own appearance setting or use a browser reading feature such as Edge’s Immersive Reader when available.

Fix dark mode when it does not look right
Check Contrast themes
A Windows Contrast theme is separate from standard dark mode and can override the normal color choices.
- Open Start > Settings > Accessibility > Contrast themes.
- Open the Contrast themes drop-down menu.
- Select None.
- Select Apply.
You can also toggle high-contrast mode with Left Alt + Left Shift + Print Screen. This shortcut can be triggered accidentally, so it is worth checking Contrast themes if Windows suddenly displays unusual colors.
Check the individual app
If File Explorer and the taskbar are dark but one application is still light, Windows is probably working normally. Open that program’s appearance settings and select its dark option, if it has one. Some applications simply do not support dark mode.

Night light changes the display to warmer tones to reduce blue light. It does not recolor Windows or turn interfaces dark. Its settings are under Settings > System > Display > Night light settings.

Accent color is a separate option
Accent color changes highlights such as links, buttons, title bars, and window borders. It does not activate dark mode. The option to show an accent color on Start and the taskbar is available only when Windows is using Dark or Custom mode.
Does dark mode work on every Windows 11 edition?
Microsoft publishes the dark-mode procedure as a general Windows 11 Settings process rather than separate instructions for Home, Pro, Enterprise, and Education editions. The same path—Settings > Personalization > Colors—is the normal way to enable it on supported Windows 11 installations.

No. Registry edits and command-line scripts are unnecessary for normal Windows 11 dark mode. Use Settings > Personalization > Colors > Choose your mode > Dark. Registry changes can introduce unwanted behavior and make troubleshooting harder.

How do I turn on dark mode in Windows 11?

Can I keep Windows dark but make apps light?
Yes. Choose Custom under Choose your mode, set Choose your default Windows mode to Dark, and set Choose your default app mode to Light.
Why is a website still white when Windows 11 is in dark mode?

Why does one app stay in light mode?
The app may have its own theme setting or may not support dark mode. Check its Appearance or Theme settings; Windows cannot force every program to follow its color preference.
The Bottom Line
For normal Windows 11 dark mode, go to Settings > Personalization > Colors and choose Dark. Use Custom when Windows and apps need different themes, then configure Edge and Microsoft 365 separately if their interfaces or content do not follow the system setting.
