How To Add Overlay In CapCut PC – Full Guide

Add videos, images, text, stickers, captions, and green-screen footage as overlays in CapCut PC. This guide explains the Desktop timeline workflow, masking, effects, common problems, and export settings.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

CapCut PC does not use the mobile app’s dedicated Overlay → Add overlay button. On Desktop, you create the same layered effect by importing your media and placing it on a timeline track above the main video.

This works for videos, images, logos, text, stickers, captions, effects, and green-screen footage. The exact panel arrangement can vary slightly between CapCut Desktop releases, but the core workflow remains the same.

How to add a video or image overlay in CapCut PC

  1. Open CapCut Desktop and click New project.
  2. Click Import and choose the video you want to use as the background.
  3. Drag the background video from the media area onto the main timeline.
  4. Click Import again and select the video, image, logo, or other file you want to use as the overlay. You can also look in Device, Spaces, or Brand assets, depending on where the media is stored.
  5. Drag the overlay asset onto a timeline track above the background clip.
  6. Select the overlay in the preview window. Drag its corner handles to resize it, then drag it to the required position.
  7. Move the overlay clip left or right on the timeline to decide when it appears. Drag either end of the clip to change its duration.
  8. Press the Spacebar to preview the result.

The upper timeline track is the overlay layer. If you place the second video on the same track after the background clip, it will play after the background rather than appear on top of it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Changing overlay size and position

Click the overlay clip first. In the preview player, use the corner handles to scale it. Drag inside the selected area to move it. For a picture-in-picture layout, shrink the overlay and position it in a corner. For a full-screen replacement or texture, enlarge it until it covers the frame.

Keep the overlay’s proportions locked where possible. Stretching a portrait video horizontally or a logo vertically will make it look distorted.

Changing when the overlay appears

The overlay’s horizontal position on the timeline controls its start time. Its length controls how long it remains visible. For example, to show a reaction video from 00:12 to 00:20:

  1. Place the overlay on the upper track.
  2. Drag its left edge to the 12-second point.
  3. Drag its right edge to the 20-second point.
  4. Preview the section and adjust the edges if the timing is not precise.

How to add a stock overlay from CapCut

You do not always need to download an overlay file separately. CapCut Desktop provides built-in Stock materials, including categories such as Trending, Green screen, and Background.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open a project and click Import.
  2. Open Stock materials.
  3. Browse or search for an asset.
  4. For an item that is not already available locally, hover over it and click the download icon.
  5. Add the stock item to the project and drag it onto a track above the background video.

Stock material follows the same editing rules as imported media: resize it in the preview, move it on the timeline, and trim its duration.

How to add a text overlay

Text is useful for titles, labels, subtitles, calls to action, and watermarks.

  1. Click Text in the left-side menu.
  2. Choose Add text. You can also select Text template for a pre-designed text element.
  3. Enter your wording in the text controls.
  4. Format the font, size, color, alignment, and other available properties.
  5. Drag the text layer on the timeline to the required start point.
  6. Trim the layer’s left or right edge to control how long it stays on screen.
  7. Select the text in the preview and reposition or resize it.

CapCut places the text on an upper timeline track, so it behaves as an overlay above the video. Avoid placing important text too close to the edges, where it may be cropped on different screens.

Adding automatic or imported captions

For captions generated from the video’s audio, use Auto captions → Generate. CapCut creates caption elements that can be edited and positioned as text overlays.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you already have a caption file, use Local captions → Import. Check the imported captions against the audio because timing, line breaks, and unsupported formatting can vary.

How to add a sticker overlay

  1. Click Stickers.
  2. Browse the available sticker categories and choose an item.
  3. Drag or add the sticker to the project.
  4. Resize and position it in the preview window.
  5. Adjust its timeline duration and start time.

The sticker section also includes AI generated stickers, which can create an asset from a description, and Branded stickers for available branded materials.

How to add a green-screen overlay

A green-screen clip is added like any other video overlay: import it and place it on a track above the background. You then need to remove the green background so the subject appears over the main video.

  1. Import the background and place it on the main track.
  2. Import the green-screen video and place it above the background.
  3. Select the green-screen clip in the timeline.
  4. Open the clip’s background-removal controls if they are available in your Desktop layout.
  5. Use the chroma-key or related green-screen control to select the green color and refine the result.
  6. Resize and position the subject over the background.

On some Desktop installations, Remove BG controls may be unavailable or greyed out. Selecting the actual overlay clip—not the background clip—is essential before checking clip-specific controls. A recent Mac user report also describes Remove BG options remaining greyed out after an update, so the cause is not universal and may depend on the project, media, edition, or current app state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

  • Video effects: effects that alter the video generally.

Apply an effect to the intended clip or layer, then review its duration on the timeline. If the effect changes the entire composition instead of only the overlay, check which clip or track is selected before applying it.

How to mask an overlay

A mask hides part of a clip so that only a selected shape or area remains visible. This is useful for circular face-cam windows, split-screen compositions, and revealing an overlay through a specific region.

  1. Place the overlay above the background clip.
  2. Select the overlay clip in the timeline.
  3. Open Mask in the clip’s editing controls.
  4. Choose a mask shape or style available in your version of CapCut.
  5. Adjust the mask’s position and size.
  6. Set the mask’s duration or align it with the required section of the clip.

In some recent Desktop layouts, users report finding Mask in the upper-right Video panel after selecting the clip. If you cannot see it, click the overlay again and inspect the Video controls rather than the general project settings. The location can differ between Desktop versions.

Overlay versus transition: what is the difference?

These features are often confused:

Feature Where it goes What it does
Video or image overlay On a track above the main clip Shows additional media over the background
Text or sticker overlay On an upper timeline track Adds words, graphics, or animated elements over the video
Transition At the junction between two clips Controls how one clip changes into another

To add a transition, click Transition at the junction between two timeline clips, select a style, adjust its duration, and preview it. A transition does not create a separate overlay layer.

Common CapCut PC overlay problems

There is no Overlay button

This is normally expected on Desktop. The dedicated Overlay → Add overlay route belongs to the mobile app. On PC, use Import and drag the media onto a track above the background.

The overlay replaces the background instead of appearing above it

Check the timeline track. The background must be on the lower/main track, while the overlay must be on a track above it. If both clips are on the same track, move the overlay upward.

The overlay is not visible

  • Confirm that the overlay clip is within the playhead position.
  • Check that its duration has not been trimmed to zero or to a different section.
  • Select it and look for a very small scale or an off-screen position.
  • Check whether another full-screen clip or effect is covering it.
  • Make sure the clip is not hidden, muted, or disabled by a layer control in your current layout.

Mask is missing

Select the overlay clip first. Then inspect the upper-right Video panel for Mask. Clicking an empty timeline area or the background clip can show different controls.

Remove BG is greyed out

Select the overlay video itself and check the clip controls again. If the controls remain disabled, the issue may be related to the media type, project, CapCut edition, hardware, or an app-specific problem. The available reports do not establish one universal fix.

The exported overlay looks blurry

Start with a sufficiently large source image or video. Enlarging a small image beyond its original resolution will not restore detail. Also check export resolution and bitrate rather than judging quality only in the editing preview.

Exporting a CapCut PC video with overlays

  1. Click Export in the upper-right corner.
  2. Choose the required resolution, bit rate, codec, format, and frame rate.
  3. Review the estimated file size and output location.
  4. Click Export again to render the finished video.

CapCut Desktop can support resolutions up to 4K in suitable projects, although the available options depend on the source media, project, hardware, and current application capabilities. For broad compatibility, CapCut identifies H.264 as a practical codec and MP4 as a widely supported format.

As general guidance, CapCut gives approximately 4,000–6,000 kbps for standard-quality video and 10,000 kbps as an example for higher-definition content. These are not mandatory overlay settings. Match the export frame rate and resolution to the project when possible, then increase bitrate if fine details, text, or fast motion look compressed.

MP4 with H.264 is a broadly compatible choice. Select the resolution, frame rate, and bitrate based on the project and the quality you need.

Are Ctrl+I and Ctrl+Alt+T verified overlay shortcuts?

They should not be treated as verified current CapCut Desktop commands for this workflow. The reliable method is to use Import and drag the asset onto a track above the main video.

The Bottom Line

To add an overlay in CapCut PC, import the extra media and place it on a timeline track above the background video. Select it to resize or move it, then adjust its timing on the timeline. Text, stickers, stock materials, effects, masks, captions, and green-screen footage use the same layered editing principle. The mobile Overlay → Add overlay button is not the Desktop workflow.
