Discord can show a green speaking indicator while producing no sound. In most cases, the problem is not the server or microphone—it is an incorrect output device, a muted per-app volume setting, or a voice configuration that no longer matches your headphones or speakers.
Work through these six methods in order. The paths below use Discord’s desktop app and Windows 11 where applicable; Windows 10 alternatives are included. If you can hear system sounds but not Discord, start with Method 1 and Method 2.

1. Select the correct output device in Discord and Windows
Discord can use a different playback device from Windows. Your microphone may work normally because Input Device and Output Device are separate settings.
Choose the device in Discord
- Open Discord and select the User Settings cogwheel.
- Open Voice & Video.
- Under Voice, find Output Device.
- Select the exact headphones, headset, speakers, or monitor you want to use. Do not leave it on Default while troubleshooting.
- Raise the Output Volume slider and rejoin the voice channel.
Also check that you are not deafened and that the individual user or channel volume has not been muted. If other users have a green speaking indicator but you hear nothing, Discord recommends checking the selected output device, the Windows playback device, your deafen status, and channel volume.
#1 Best Overall
- Enjoy expansive cinematic sound. Big 50 mm audio drivers deliver an incredible sound experience
- Hear Enemies From All Sides. DTS Headphone:X 2.0 surround sound(1) lets you hear enemies sneaking behind you, special ability cues, and immersive environments. It’s positional clarity that can make the difference between victory and defeat. Experience three-dimensional audio that goes beyond 7.1 channels to make you feel like you’re right in the middle of the action. (1) DTS Headphone:X 2.0 requires Logitech G HUB Software.
- Be Heard Loud and Clear. The big 6 mm boom mic makes sure you’re heard by gaming partners and mutes when flipped up.
- Use One Headset For Most Game Platforms. Your headphones work with your PC or Mac via USB DAC or 3.5 mm cable, mobile devices with 3.5 mm cable or with gaming consoles including PlayStationⓇ 5 and PlayStationⓇ 4 (USB wireless stereo sound only), Nintendo Switch (wireless stereo sound when docked)
- Game for Hours in Comfort. Everything about these headphones is about comfort: The deluxe lightweight leatherette ear cups and headband are made to keep pressure off your ears. Ear cups rotate up to 90 degrees for convenience.
Choose the device in Windows 11
- Open Start → Settings → System → Sound.
- Under Output, select the headphones or speakers you actually want to use.
Be careful with HDMI and DisplayPort monitors. Windows may select a monitor as the output even when that monitor has no built-in speakers. Windows can report normal volume while sending Discord audio to that silent display.
Set the classic Windows playback device
- Go to Start → Settings → System → Sound.
- Open Sound Control Panel under Related settings.
- Open the Playback tab.
- Select the intended device and click Set Default.
Test the device with another application before returning to Discord. If it is silent everywhere, check its power, mute switch, cable, Bluetooth connection, and USB port. Unplug headphones temporarily as well—Windows may stop using speakers while headphones are connected.
2. Fix Discord’s per-app volume and output assignment
Windows can give each application its own volume level and output device. This explains why YouTube or system sounds can work while Discord remains silent.
Windows 11
- Open Start → Settings → System → Sound.
- Select Volume mixer.
- Under Apps, find Discord.
- Make sure Discord is not muted and raise its volume slider.
- Set Discord’s Output device to the same headphones or speakers selected in Method 1.
You can reach the same controls from the taskbar: right-click the Speakers icon, select the arrow beside the volume slider, then select the settings icon beside the Volume mixer slider. Its tooltip is More mixer settings.
Windows 10
- Right-click the taskbar Volume icon and choose Open Volume mixer.
- Make sure Discord is not muted and increase its slider.
- Right-click the Volume icon again and select Sounds → Playback.
- Set the correct playback device as Default.
- Return to the Volume mixer and confirm Discord is assigned to that device.
Close and reopen Discord after changing the per-app device. Some audio assignments do not update cleanly while the application is already connected to a voice channel.
3. Change Discord’s audio subsystem or reset voice settings
A Discord update or a change of headset can leave the client using an audio mode that does not cooperate with your Windows driver. Discord’s current troubleshooting options are Standard and Legacy.
Switch the subsystem
- Open User Settings → Voice & Video.
- Scroll down to Audio Subsystem.
- Switch from Standard to Legacy, or from Legacy to Standard.
- Restart Discord or leave and rejoin the voice channel.
Do not rely on old guides that instruct everyone to select an “Experimental” subsystem. Discord’s current troubleshooting material identifies Standard and Legacy as the relevant choices, and the available options can vary by installed build.

Reset Discord’s voice configuration
- Stay in User Settings → Voice & Video.
- Scroll to the Debugging section.
- Select Reset Voice and Video Settings and confirm.
- Return to the Voice settings and reselect your Input Device and Output Device.
The reset restores custom voice settings, including device selections, so you may need to configure your headset again afterward.
4. Restart Windows audio services and repair the driver
If Discord and other applications are both having trouble, repair Windows audio rather than changing Discord settings repeatedly.
Restart the audio services
- Press Start, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - Right-click Windows Audio and select Restart.
- Right-click Windows Audio Endpoint Builder and select Restart.
- Open Discord and test a voice channel again.
Update the audio driver
- Open Start and search for Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the audio device and choose Update driver.
- Restart the PC and test Discord.
If the headphones or speakers do not appear in Windows at all, open Device Manager and expand Sound, video and game controllers. If the device is listed, right-click it and choose Enable device when that option is available. If it is missing, select View → Show hidden devices, then Action → Scan for hardware changes.
Missing devices can result from a disabled device, a failed driver load, a driver change, an update, or a corrupted driver. In Windows 11, you can also run Start → Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters → Audio → Run. Microsoft also offers the automated Audio troubleshooter through the Get Help app.

Audio enhancements can interfere with particular headsets, USB DACs, Bluetooth devices, or driver packages. Disable them temporarily while testing.
- Open Start → Settings → System → Sound.
- Under Output, select the active playback device.
- Under Advanced settings, set Audio enhancements to Off.
- Retest Discord.
Also verify that Windows has not disabled the device:
- Go to Start → Settings → System → Sound.
- Under Advanced, select More sound settings.
- Open Playback, select the device, and choose Properties.
- Next to Device usage, choose Use this device (enable).
If your problem includes both hearing and speaking, check Start → Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone. Turn on Microphone access and Let apps access your microphone. This setting mainly affects your outgoing audio, but a blocked microphone can also make the Discord voice session behave incorrectly in both directions.

6. Isolate a Discord client, browser, or mobile problem
When Windows audio works elsewhere and the settings above are correct, determine whether the fault belongs to the Discord desktop client, your browser, or the mobile app.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDesktop Discord
On Windows, right-click the Discord shortcut and choose Run as administrator. This is a troubleshooting test rather than a permanent requirement. If Discord works only as administrator, another Windows permission or software conflict may be affecting the normal client.
You can also compare the stable desktop client with Discord Beta. Beta is a pre-release build and may occasionally break, so use it as a comparison—not as a guaranteed repair. Discord support may ask for your operating system, client type, screenshots of Voice & Video, and the available input/output device list.
Discord in a browser
Check that your browser has granted Discord microphone and related site permissions. Discord provides separate permission paths for Chrome, Firefox, and Safari. After correcting permissions, apply the same output-device, Windows mixer, and audio troubleshooting steps used by the desktop app.
iPhone and iPad
- Open Discord and tap your avatar in the bottom-right corner.
- Tap the cogwheel in the top-right.
- Scroll to Voice and review the available voice options.
- During a call, tap the Bluetooth icon, open the AirPlay selection, and choose the Bluetooth headphones or speaker.
On iOS, Discord uses AirPlay to select an external output instead of the phone speaker. If mobile voice audio is still abnormal, toggle options such as Auto Sensitivity, Noise Suppression, Echo Cancellation, Noise Reduction, and Automatic Gain Control to identify whether one is affecting the session.

FAQ
Why can I hear YouTube but not Discord?
Windows may have muted Discord in the Volume mixer or assigned Discord to a different output device. Open Settings → System → Sound → Volume mixer, raise Discord’s volume, and set its Output device to your active headphones or speakers.
Why does Discord show people talking when I hear nothing?
The green speaking indicator only shows that Discord is receiving their voice. Check Discord’s Output Device, Windows’ selected output, your deafen status, and the individual or channel volume.

Should I choose Standard or Legacy audio subsystem?
Try both. In Discord, open User Settings → Voice & Video, find Audio Subsystem, switch between Standard and Legacy, then restart Discord or rejoin the channel. The correct choice depends on the Windows audio device and driver.
Will resetting Discord Voice and Video settings delete my account or servers?
No. It resets voice-related settings, including custom input and output selections. Afterward, reselect the intended microphone and playback device.
Why is my monitor listed as an audio output but silent?
An HDMI or DisplayPort monitor can be selected as Windows’ default output even when it has no speakers. Select your actual headphones or speakers under Windows Settings → System → Sound → Output.
Does Windows 10 still receive Microsoft audio support?
Microsoft support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025, including free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes. The Windows 10 menu paths may still work, but upgrading to a supported Windows release is worth considering.
The Bottom Line
Start by selecting the exact output device in both Discord and Windows, then check Discord’s entry in the Windows Volume mixer. Those two settings explain most cases where Discord indicators work but voices are silent. If they are correct, switch the Discord audio subsystem, reset Voice and Video settings, restart Windows audio services, and inspect the driver or physical device. For browser and mobile users, check site permissions and AirPlay/Bluetooth routing before reinstalling anything.
