To keep transcripts out, identify every place the app persists them, configure the relevant iOS or Android backup controls, and test the actual restore and migration paths. Exclusion also means users may lose transcript history when they restore or move to another phone.
Decide what “out of backup” means
Separate three questions before changing storage or backup rules: which transcript artifacts should be excluded, whether the policy applies to cloud backups, device-to-device transfers, or both, and what users should expect after reinstalling or migrating. Android can configure cloud backup and device transfer separately. Apple’s file-exclusion mechanism is a system hint, not a guarantee that data will never appear in a backup or on a restored device.

Map the complete transcript lifecycle, not just the final text file. Include raw audio, decoded text, temporary chunks, indexes, summaries, database records and sidecar files, exports, logs, and cached intermediate data. Platform documentation describes available controls; it cannot tell you which paths or remote services a particular app uses.
Choose storage for the data’s lifecycle
Do not put durable transcript history in temporary or cache storage merely to avoid backup. Such locations are intended for data that may be purged, which can conflict with a product promise to retain history. Choose a location that matches how long the app and user need the data, then apply the appropriate backup policy.

On Apple platforms, Documents and Application Support are included in regular backups. Application Support is not excluded just because users do not see it. Apple describes temporary and cache locations as purgeable; these may suit genuinely temporary or recreatable artifacts, not durable history users expect to keep. See Apple’s guidance on optimizing app data for iCloud Backup.
Exclude transcript files on iOS
For transcript data that should not be backed up, set URLResourceValues.isExcludedFromBackup to true on each file or on a dedicated directory containing related artifacts. Apple’s API documentation shows setting the resource value through URL.setResourceValues and notes that directory exclusion can apply to its contents.

- Trace each transcript artifact to its persisted file or directory, including database files and associated sidecars.
- Apply the exclusion to the relevant files or to a dedicated transcript directory. Avoid excluding a directory that also contains data the app intends to back up.
- Reapply the exclusion after saves, replacements, or other file operations that may reset the resource value.
- Test backup and restore behavior on the supported OS versions, and verify the product’s actual outcome rather than treating the flag as a guarantee.
Apple explicitly cautions that this setting is not a mechanism to guarantee excluded items never appear in a backup or on a restored device. Avoid promising that a transcript is “impossible to back up” based on the flag alone.

On Android 12 (API 31) and later, use android:dataExtractionRules to point to rules that state the intended policy separately for <cloud-backup> and <device-transfer>. Exclude transcript paths from each section where transcripts must not be carried. If a transfer section is omitted, Android documents that transfer as fully enabled by default apart from excluded directories, so make the intended policy explicit.
Retain the older android:fullBackupContent rules for Android 11 (API 30) and earlier when those versions are supported; the legacy rules have different syntax and manifest wiring. Also account for target SDK and device-maker behavior. On some Android 12+ devices from some manufacturers, android:allowBackup="false" disables cloud backup but does not disable device-to-device transfer. If transcripts must not move to another phone, configure and test the transfer route rather than relying on that flag alone.

Android excludes cache, code-cache, and no-backup directories from Auto Backup by default. Use those locations only when their lifecycle fits the data: they are not a substitute for deciding whether transcript history is temporary or durable. Android recommends excluding particularly sensitive data or requiring end-to-end encryption if it cannot be excluded; see its backup best practices.

Compare the available policies
| Policy choice | What it controls | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Exclude transcript files or directories | Targets transcript artifacts while allowing other app data to remain eligible for backup. Apple documents file- or directory-level exclusion; Android supports selective rules. | Requires a complete inventory of transcript paths and, on iOS, reapplying the exclusion after file operations that can reset it. |
| Disable all app backup | Android’s android:allowBackup="false" opts out of app backup. |
Broader than transcript-only exclusion; on some Android 12+ devices it may not prevent device-to-device transfer. |
| Exclude from cloud backup but allow transfer | Android 12+ rules can assign different policies to cloud backup and device transfer. | Transcript history may still move to a new phone; this is not a “never transfer” policy. |
| Exclude from both cloud backup and transfer | Android 12+ rules can exclude transcript paths in both extraction sections. | Users may not recover that history through either route. Test relevant OS versions and manufacturers. |
Review and test the first PR
- Trace inference output through every persisted representation, including databases, sidecars, app logs, crash reporting, exports, cached audio, and intermediate data.
- Write down the product promise: exclude from cloud backup only, or from both backup and device migration?
- On iOS, inspect writes and replacements to ensure exclusions are applied after operations that may reset the resource value.
- On Android, check manifest attributes and XML rules for every supported OS and target SDK range, including legacy rules for Android 11 and lower.
- Verify that every transcript-related path is excluded in each intended Android extraction section.
- Exercise backup, restore, and migration routes on supported platform versions and relevant manufacturers. Configuration expresses intent; only testing establishes the app’s observed outcome.
- Confirm what the app displays when transcript history is absent after reinstall, restore, or migration, and ensure that behavior matches the retention promise.
