To evaluate semiconductor equipment stocks, examine three connected factors: how much reported backlog can realistically turn into revenue, how dependent the company is on a few customers, and whether those customers are placing and timing capital-spending orders. Compare each company using its own definitions and aligned reporting periods. Backlog can offer visibility, but it is not a promise of revenue, profit, or cash in a particular quarter.
What backlog tells you—and what it does not
Backlog is a starting point for assessing potential demand, not a forecast you can simply add to next quarter’s revenue. Companies may define it differently, and orders may be canceled, deferred, shipped later than expected, or recognized only after installation or customer acceptance.

Axcelis defines backlog to include firm product orders plus specified remaining funded contract value. Its 2025 Form 10-K reported backlog of $161.6 million as of December 31, 2025, while cautioning that cancellations or deferrals and shipping or acceptance delays mean backlog may not indicate revenue for a particular future period. - Record the amount and date. Use the latest annual or quarterly filing and note the reporting date, currency, and fiscal period.
- Copy the company’s definition. Check what counts as an order, including any funded contract value, and do not assume another supplier uses the same measure.
- Check cancellation and timing terms. Look for language on customer deferrals, shipment schedules, installation, and acceptance.
- Compare trends across periods. Read backlog alongside revenue, shipments, order commentary, and working-capital movements. A rising backlog may be useful context, but it does not establish that margins or cash collection will rise with it.
Keep the conversion chain distinct: planned customer spending is not necessarily an order; an order is not a delivery; and a delivery is not automatically recognized revenue in the same period.

How customer concentration changes the risk
Find each company’s largest-customer shares of revenue and, where disclosed, receivables. Label the measure precisely: a percentage of sales is not the same as a share of orders or unpaid invoices. Then consider the effect of a major customer reducing, delaying, or shifting purchases.
Two fiscal 2025 disclosures illustrate why customer shares need context. ASML reported that its two largest customers accounted for 38.0% of 2025 net sales. Ichor reported that Lam Research and Applied Materials together accounted for 76% of its fiscal 2025 sales. These figures describe different businesses and reporting bases; they are company-specific examples, not directly comparable measures of peer risk. Identify who the customer is
A company selling complete systems to chipmakers faces a different customer structure from a subsystem supplier selling into other equipment manufacturers. Ichor’s named major customers are equipment companies, while ASML’s sales concentration reflects its own customer base. A high percentage can therefore signal different dependencies: a supplier may be exposed to one manufacturer’s purchasing decisions, while another may be exposed to a chipmaker’s fab plans. Examine the company’s role in the supply chain before interpreting the percentage.
Connect fab spending to the supplier’s business
Semiconductor equipment demand depends on customers’ spending decisions, but those decisions can reflect both production capacity needs and technology transitions. Applied Materials says its results are driven primarily by customer spending on equipment and services to support technology transitions or changes in production volume. ASML says customer capital-expenditure timing and magnitude affect its business, and that reductions or delays can adversely affect sales, revenue, and results. When reading a supplier’s outlook, pair customer spending plans with the supplier’s comments on capacity additions, technology transitions, end markets, and order timing. A large fab project may provide sector context, but it does not guarantee near-term orders or revenue for every equipment company. Product role, customer mix, service exposure, and the timing of installation and acceptance all affect how an industry spending change reaches a particular supplier.

Use the same checklist for each company, but preserve differences in their definitions rather than forcing unlike measures into a single ranking.
| Comparison item | What to record |
|---|---|
| Backlog | Latest reported amount, date, currency, and the company’s stated definition. |
| Backlog conversion caveats | Whether orders may be canceled or deferred, and any disclosed delivery, installation, or acceptance timing. |
| Customer concentration | Largest customer shares and whether each percentage refers to revenue, orders, or receivables. |
| Customer type | Chip manufacturer, equipment maker, or another buyer; note the supplier’s position in the value chain. |
| Demand exposure | Disclosed exposure to capacity growth, technology transitions, production-volume changes, and relevant end markets. |
| Revenue mix | Systems and services mix where reported, and how the company describes their demand drivers. |
| Execution timing | Disclosed risks or conditions affecting shipment, installation, acceptance, and revenue recognition. |
| Reporting basis | Fiscal year end, reporting period, and currency so that comparisons are aligned. |
Use annual and quarterly filings to keep the comparison current, and retain each company’s own wording for backlog and customer concentration. These measures help describe visibility and exposure; together they do not remove uncertainty about when customers will spend or when orders will become revenue.
