Scientists identify ancient animal bones by comparing their anatomy with known skeletons, then record how certain the identification is given the specimen’s condition. To date a bone, they may radiocarbon-date suitable organic material; its age must then be interpreted alongside the archaeological layer and the bone’s relationship to other finds. These are related but separate tasks: a species identification is not a date, and a date for one bone does not automatically date an entire site.
How scientists identify animal bones
Start with the find’s context
Before examining the bone, archaeologists document where it was found, which layer it came from, and how it relates to nearby material. Context anchors a find in time and space and helps determine whether bones and artifacts belong to the same deposit. The Council for British Archaeology’s zooarchaeology overview describes this connection between excavation records and later interpretation.

Identify the skeletal element and compare its anatomy
A specialist first sorts the remains and determines which part of the skeleton is present. They inspect diagnostic shapes and surfaces, then compare them with reference skeletons from known animals. The Florida Museum explains that identifications are made as specifically as the fragmentary condition permits; the Illinois State Museum’s guide to reading ancient animal remains also describes comparative identification.

A complete, distinctive bone may support identification to species. A small, worn, burned, or otherwise altered fragment may only support a broader group—or no reliable identification at all. Analysts should record that uncertainty rather than infer a species solely because it would fit the site’s story.

Ask what else the remains can show
Once identified, bones can be examined for age, sex, body size, cut marks, burning, and the distribution of skeletal parts. Across an assemblage, these observations may help investigate food habits, hunting and fishing, animal husbandry, seasonality, trade, ritual activity, and site formation. The University of Copenhagen’s zooarchaeology service outlines these potential research questions. A single isolated bone rarely establishes a broad pattern by itself.
When specialists use laboratory methods
Laboratory methods can add evidence when anatomy is ambiguous or when the question concerns diet, movement, or biological relationships. They do not guarantee an answer for every specimen: the relevant tissue must survive, and the sample must be appropriate to the question.

| Method | What it can help answer | Key qualification |
|---|---|---|
| ZooMS | Species or taxonomic identification from collagen peptide patterns | Useful for fragments that are difficult to identify visually, if suitable collagen survives. |
| Ancient DNA | Species, sex, lineage, or questions about domestication | Depends on DNA preservation and contamination control; it is not available from every bone. |
| Isotope analysis | Questions about diet, environment, or mobility | The appropriate tissue and archaeological context depend on the specific question. |
The Council for British Archaeology describes these methods as additional lines of evidence. They complement anatomical identification rather than replacing careful context and documentation.

Radiocarbon dating estimates when the animal died
Radiocarbon dating measures the carbon-14 remaining in once-living material. After an animal dies, it no longer exchanges carbon with its environment, and its carbon-14 decays. A laboratory measurement is used to estimate when that organism died. The U.S. National Park Service’s explanation of archaeological dating includes bone among materials that can be radiocarbon-dated.

A radiocarbon result applies to the sampled material, not automatically to nearby artifacts or the whole site. Its archaeological meaning depends on whether the bone is securely associated with the deposit being studied. An articulated animal skeleton in a primary deposit can provide a particularly useful association, as discussed in the Oxford Handbook of Zooarchaeology glossary.
Radiocarbon dating has a finite reach. The Oxford Handbook glossary discusses faunal radiocarbon dating for material less than approximately 50,000 years old. This is an approximate method boundary, not a promise that any sample in that range can be dated precisely. Suitability and precision depend on the particular material and case; no single precision figure applies to every bone.

Relative chronology places bones in a sequence
Not every chronological conclusion comes from a direct date on a bone. Stratigraphy can show that one deposit lies above or below another, while faunal succession and biostratigraphy can place deposits in a broader sequence using changes in animal remains over time. These approaches rely on intact context and appropriate regional evidence; they establish relationships or sequence, not necessarily a numerical age for each specimen. The Oxford Handbook glossary discusses these zooarchaeological methods.
How to interpret an identification and a date together
Identification and dating answer different questions. Anatomy and laboratory analyses can indicate what animal a specimen came from; radiocarbon dating estimates when the sampled organism died; stratigraphy helps explain where the specimen sits in a sequence. A sound interpretation considers all three without treating one as a substitute for the others.

- Check identification certainty: Is the claim supported by diagnostic anatomy or a suitable laboratory result, and does it match the fragment’s preservation?
- Check what was dated: The result belongs to the sampled organic material. It does not automatically date associated objects.
- Check the association: Was the specimen in a secure deposit, or could it have moved or become mixed with material from another layer?
- Match the method to the question: Species, diet, geographic movement, and chronological sequence are different questions and may require different evidence.
Historic England’s overview of archaeological animal-bone study describes the specialist work involved from project planning through analysis, while the University of Copenhagen outlines the broader interpretive questions that assemblages can address.
