Before buying refurbished or discounted noise-canceling headphones, verify who refurbished them, what was tested, the exact return and warranty terms, and the total price compared with a new unit on sale. Then check condition, accessories, battery expectations, comfort, and the features you rely on. “Refurbished,” “renewed,” and cosmetic grades are not universal promises: the written terms for that specific seller and listing matter.
1. Identify the seller and what “refurbished” means
Start with the actual seller and refurbisher—not just the marketplace or the word on the product page. Look for a written description of inspection, testing, and repairs, and whether replacement parts are original or third-party. A manufacturer program may document its own process; a third-party seller can use different standards.

For example, Bose says products in its direct Certified Refurbished program are restored and tested by Bose, with genuine replacement parts used where needed: Bose Certified Refurbished. Harman says refurbished headphones must pass testing of their original features and specifications: Harman’s headphone refurbishing guide. Those are statements about the named programs, not proof of how every listing is handled.
If the seller does not explain what was tested, ask before paying. Do not assume a refurbishment includes a new battery, new ear cushions, original parts, or a particular level of functional testing unless the listing says so.

2. Read the warranty and return terms for this exact listing
Check the full policy before checkout. Note how long coverage lasts, when it starts, what it excludes, who handles a claim, and whether you pay return shipping. Save the listing and policy at purchase; terms from a different product, seller, or country may not apply.
Manufacturer examples illustrate why checking matters: Bose says purchases made directly through its Certified Refurbished program have a one-year limited warranty and a 30-day return period (Bose). Sennheiser’s Certified Refurbished page states a six-month manufacturer warranty (Sennheiser). Harman’s US support page says refurbished products have a 30-day return period and the warranty conditions of a similar new product (Harman Audio Support). These are current page statements checked on October 7, 2026, not general rules for refurbished headphones.
A return window is especially useful when fit, battery life, or ANC performance is uncertain. Make a plan to test the headphones soon after delivery, while you can still act under the seller’s stated policy.

3. Compare the real price, not the advertised discount
Compare the total checkout cost of the exact model with the current price of a new unit and other listings for that model. Include shipping, tax, missing accessories, and any likely replacement cushions or other parts. A sale can make a new pair cheaper than a refurbished one.
Harman specifically warns that a refurbished product can temporarily cost as much as—or more than—a similar new product on sale (Harman Audio Support). The cited page gives no fixed refurbished discount, so there is no reliable percentage to use as a rule of thumb. Compare what you would actually pay today.
4. Decode the condition grade and inspect what is included
A grade only helps if you can read its definition. Check the listing’s written description and photos, and look closely at the ear cushions, headband, hinges, ports, buttons, and charging contacts. Confirm the exact model number and whether the charging cable, audio cable, case, and other accessories you need are included.

Grading systems can distinguish cosmetic wear and parts differently. eBay publishes criteria for its grades (eBay condition criteria); Harman says its refurbished products may have minor cosmetic imperfections and that needed parts can be replaced (Harman’s refurbishing guide). Read the terms for the specific listing rather than treating a grade label as a promise of pristine condition.

If ear cushions are worn, check whether replacement cushions are available for the exact model. Do not choose generic pads based on appearance alone: fit and acoustic performance can differ. Bose says its refurbished products may receive new ear cushions, but that should not be assumed for other sellers or listings (Bose).
5. Treat battery life as a claim to verify, not a guarantee
Published runtime figures describe model capabilities under manufacturer conditions; they do not establish the remaining capacity of a used unit. Bose lists up to 24 hours of playback with noise canceling turned on for the cited QuietComfort model (Bose QuietComfort). Sennheiser advertises up to 50 hours for its refurbished ACCENTUM Wireless (Sennheiser ACCENTUM Wireless refurbished page). Neither figure promises that a particular refurbished pair’s battery will perform like a new one.

Look for a specific battery-condition promise in the seller’s terms. If you buy, charge the headphones fully and observe their performance during ordinary use while the return option remains open.

Use the return period to check the actual unit, not just its appearance. In a quiet room and with ordinary background noise, try:
- Pairing with your phone or computer, then reconnecting after disconnecting.
- Charging and the charging port or contacts.
- Both audio channels, listening for dropouts, hiss, rattling, crackle, distortion, or unequal volume.
- Noise canceling and transparency or ambient modes, if included.
- Buttons, touch controls, app-dependent functions, and microphone calls.
- Wired listening, if the model supports it and you expect to use it.
- Comfort and stability over a realistic listening session; a poor seal or uncomfortable fit can undermine the experience.
These are practical buyer checks, not results from a test of any particular listing. For the cited Bose QuietComfort model, Bose says audio can play passively after the battery is depleted, but ANC and Active EQ will not work without power (Bose QuietComfort). Check the exact model’s documentation rather than assuming another pair behaves the same way.
7. Compare candidate listings on the same criteria
When several listings look plausible, compare them side by side before choosing:
