The right way to compare banking, defence, power and cement stocks is a two-pass process. First make the numbers comparable: use the same fiscal period, accounting basis, currency, ratio definitions and peer group. Then combine general measures of profitability, cash generation, leverage, liquidity and valuation with operating metrics specific to each industry. A low P/E or P/B is not automatically cheap, and a high-growth story is not investable if cash, asset quality or debt service is deteriorating.
This guide shows which ratios matter in each sector, how to calculate and interpret them, how to build a peer comparison, and which failure signals deserve investigation before you rely on reported profit.

Start by making every comparison like-for-like
A ratio is only useful when its numerator and denominator describe the same economic period and business perimeter. Before ranking companies, record the following for every figure:

- Accounting basis: consolidated or standalone statements, and whether exceptional items, discontinued operations or minority interests are included.
- Currency and units: convert consistently and label whether figures are in millions, billions or per-share units.
- Definition: for example, whether debt includes leases, whether EBITDA is adjusted, and whether average or year-end equity is used.
- Peer set: compare similar business models, not merely companies with the same stock-exchange sector label.
- Forecast status: distinguish reported, annualised, consensus-estimate and management-guidance numbers.
National Institute of Securities Markets (NISM) describes ratio analysis as a way to assess valuation, profitability, liquidity and solvency and to compare companies over time or within an industry. Its definitions and formulas are set out in NISM’s financial-ratio reference.

Use a two-pass worksheet
- Pass one — common ratios: calculate margins, returns, cash conversion, leverage, coverage, liquidity and valuation from aligned statements.
- Pass two — sector operating metrics: add the physical or regulatory measures that explain why a ratio is rising or falling, such as non-performing assets for a bank or tonnes dispatched for a cement producer.
- Reconcile exceptions: investigate a sudden margin jump, unusually low tax, large other income, revaluation gain, one-off provision release or working-capital movement.
- Stress-test the thesis: model higher funding costs, weaker utilisation, delayed contracts, tariff disputes, fuel inflation or a cement downcycle before treating a valuation as attractive.
Core financial ratios that work across sectors
The formulas below provide a common starting point. Use them as a consistent calculation set, then adapt the interpretation to the industry’s economics.
| Ratio | Formula | What it helps answer | Main cautions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gross margin | (Revenue − cost of goods sold) ÷ revenue | How much revenue remains after direct production costs | Different cost classifications can make companies look incomparable. |
| Net margin | Net profit ÷ revenue | How much reported profit is retained from sales | Check tax rates, interest, exceptional items and non-cash gains. |
| ROE | Net income ÷ shareholder equity | Return generated on owners’ capital | High leverage or a small equity base can inflate it; use average equity where appropriate. |
| ROCE | Operating profit (or EBIT) ÷ capital employed | Return from debt and equity invested in operations | Define capital employed consistently and adjust for idle assets. |
| Debt-to-equity | Total debt ÷ shareholder equity | Balance-sheet leverage | State whether leases, short-term borrowings and hybrid instruments are included. |
| Net debt-to-EBITDA | (Debt − cash) ÷ EBITDA | Debt relative to operating earnings | EBITDA is not cash; cyclical peaks can make leverage appear safer than it is. |
| Interest coverage | EBIT ÷ interest expense | Capacity to pay interest from operating profit | Use operating cash-flow coverage as a second test when working capital is volatile. |
| Cash-flow-to-sales | Operating cash flow ÷ revenue | How much sales convert into operating cash | One period can be distorted by inventory or receivable timing. |
| Cash interest coverage | Operating cash flow ÷ interest expense | Whether collected cash, rather than accounting EBIT, covers interest | Exclude unusual cash inflows when assessing a normal year. |
| Debt-service coverage | Operating cash flow ÷ total debt service | Capacity to cover interest plus scheduled principal | Use the actual repayment calendar and include relevant lease obligations. |
| Free-cash-flow yield | Free cash flow ÷ market capitalisation | Cash return relative to the share price | Maintenance and growth capex must be separated where possible. |
NISM also sets out cash-flow-to-sales, operating-cash-flow interest coverage, debt-service coverage and free-cash-flow yield in its cash-flow and coverage guidance. Recalculate ratios from filed statements rather than copying a data vendor’s number without checking its definition.
How to evaluate banking stocks
A bank’s liabilities are largely customer deposits and other funding, so conventional industrial-company ratios can mislead. Begin with asset quality, provisioning, capital and liquidity; then use growth, profitability and valuation to judge whether returns are durable.
Net interest margin and funding franchise
Net interest margin (NIM) measures net interest income relative to interest-earning assets. Compare NIM with the funding mix: low-cost current and savings deposits can support a higher margin than expensive wholesale borrowing, while a high-yield loan book may carry greater credit risk. Track loan growth and deposit growth together. Loan growth that persistently outruns deposits can increase funding costs or liquidity risk.
Asset quality and provisions
- Gross NPA and net NPA: show the stock of stressed loans before and after provisions.
- Slippage: new loans entering non-performing status; rising slippages can precede a visible NPA increase.
- Provision coverage: provisions relative to bad loans; weak coverage leaves future earnings exposed.
- Credit cost: provisions relative to average loans, useful for comparing the current loss burden.
- Recoveries and write-offs: distinguish genuine collection from simply removing old loans from the balance sheet.
Read these measures alongside underwriting standards, restructured loans and sector or borrower concentration. A fast-growing loan book can make current ROE look strong just before credit losses rise.
Capital, liquidity and concentration
Check CET1 and total capital ratios against the applicable regulatory minimum and the bank’s own management buffer. Also review the liquidity coverage ratio, high-quality liquid assets, maturity gaps and reliance on short-term market funding. Exposure limits and concentration by borrower, industry or geography matter because one weak segment can overwhelm an otherwise healthy average. The Reserve Bank of India’s regulatory comparison identifies capital adequacy, NPA classification, exposure limits and liquidity coverage as core banking metrics; see its regulatory material.

Efficiency and returns
Use cost-to-income to assess operating efficiency, but separate investment in branches, technology or collections from structural overhead. Compare ROA as well as ROE: ROA indicates the return earned on a very large asset base, while ROE is affected by leverage and capital levels. A bank can report a high ROE by operating with thin capital, so a sustainable comparison requires capital buffers and asset quality.
Bank valuation: P/B before EV/EBITDA
Price-to-book (P/B) is usually more informative for banks than EV/EBITDA because debt is part of the banking operating model rather than a separate financing choice. Relate P/B to sustainable ROE, expected growth, credit costs and capital needs. A bank trading below book value may be cheap, or it may be signalling that its assets will earn less than the cost of equity or require future write-downs. Compare book values only after checking accounting treatment, provisioning and the proportion of tangible equity.
How to evaluate defence stocks
Defence companies often report lumpy contracts, milestone billing and concentrated customers. An order book is a starting point, not proof of future earnings. Test whether contracts are funded, executable, profitable and collectible.
Order-book quality and revenue conversion
- Reconcile the stated order-book value to disclosed contracts, award dates, scope and delivery schedules.
- Track order intake, book-to-bill and the portion expected to convert into revenue within one year.
- Check cancellation, termination and modification clauses, including customer approval requirements.
- Separate firm funded orders from options, letters of intent, framework agreements or bids that have not become binding contracts.
Large orders can carry low margins if input costs rise, specifications change or penalties delay acceptance. Look for contract-price adjustment or cost-escalation clauses and identify which party bears inflation and foreign-exchange risk.
Execution, working capital and cash
Compare revenue growth with milestone billing and operating cash flow. Rising receivable days can mean accepted work has not yet been paid; inventory growth may indicate production preparation or stalled deliveries. Calculate cash-flow-to-sales and examine advances from customers, contract assets and retention money. A defence company that reports profit while operating cash remains persistently negative needs an explanation tied to contract timing, not just a promise of future delivery.

Profitability, capital intensity and customer risk
Use EBITDA margin, EBIT margin and ROCE, then connect them to engineering content, manufacturing capacity and capex. A high-margin design or electronics business has different capital needs from a heavy platform manufacturer. Measure customer concentration by programme and country, export mix, regulatory approvals and dependence on a single procurement cycle. Delays, budget changes or a change in government requirements can affect an apparently strong backlog.

Defence valuation
Use P/E or EV/EBITDA only on normalized earnings. Remove unusually profitable delivery milestones and account for the cash required to fund inventory and receivables. A low P/E can reflect peak-cycle earnings, a backlog that will not convert, or customer concentration rather than undervaluation. No single defence-sector ratio standard is established here; use each issuer’s filings and procurement disclosures, with definitions and dates shown beside every figure.
How to evaluate power stocks
Power companies must be separated by business model: regulated transmission or distribution, contracted generation and merchant generation have different revenue and risk drivers. Start with returns and debt, then test tariffs, utilisation, fuel economics and receivables.
Returns, leverage and debt service
Pair ROE and ROCE with net debt-to-EBITDA, EBIT interest coverage and operating-cash-flow debt-service coverage. A project may show acceptable accounting profit but struggle to meet principal repayments if receivables are delayed or generation falls. Map the maturity schedule, refinancing dates, floating-rate exposure and guarantees to the cash flows of each project.
Recommended Free Tools
Tariffs, availability and utilisation
- Regulated transmission or distribution: verify the allowed return, regulatory asset treatment and the timetable for recovering approved costs.
- Contracted generation: check power-purchase agreement tenor, contracted capacity, availability obligations and payment security.
- Merchant generation: examine plant-load factor, realised power prices and exposure to spot-market volatility.
- All models: review plant availability, outages, heat rate where disclosed and commissioning progress for new capacity.
Ask whether tariffs permit fuel-cost pass-through and financing-cost recovery. A tariff dispute or regulatory receivable can convert reported revenue into a long collection cycle. Annual reports from the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission and Central Electricity Authority provide sector and regulatory context through 2024–25; consult the CERC annual-report archive and the CEA annual-report archive.
Receivables and fuel economics
Track receivable days by counterparty and ageing bucket, not just the total. Identify overdue amounts owed by financially weak utilities or government entities and any disputed regulatory receivables. For thermal generation, compare fuel cost, heat rate and pass-through clauses; for renewable projects, examine resource variability, curtailment, payment security and debt tenor. New capex should earn a return above its cost of capital after realistic construction delays and operating assumptions.
Power valuation
EV/EBITDA is useful when paired with net debt, but the multiple must reflect asset life, contracted versus merchant revenue, maintenance capex and refinancing risk. A low EV/EBITDA multiple may simply compensate investors for high leverage, ageing plants, weak offtakers or returns below the cost of capital.

How to evaluate cement stocks
Cement is cyclical and asset intensive. Compare companies through a full cycle rather than one strong quarter, and connect financial ratios to tonnes, prices, energy and logistics.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Volume, price and unit economics
- Dispatch or sales volume: shows demand and market-share movement.
- Realisation per tonne: separates pricing power from volume-led revenue growth.
- EBITDA or operating profit per tonne: reveals unit economics before scale and accounting differences obscure them.
- Energy and freight cost per tonne: identifies fuel, power, distance and logistics exposure.
- Capacity utilisation: indicates how effectively the fixed-asset base is being used.
Check whether a margin increase came from price, lower fuel cost, a better product mix or temporary utilisation. Compare integrated plants, grinding units and imported-clinker operations on an equivalent basis.
Capital returns and balance sheet
Use ROCE across the cycle, net debt-to-EBITDA and interest coverage. Include maintenance capex separately from expansion capex and test whether new capacity can earn an adequate return at conservative utilisation and pricing. Operating cash flow should fund maintenance and a reasonable portion of expansion without continuous equity issuance or expensive refinancing.
Issuer-specific illustration: Power Cement FY2025
Power Cement Limited’s FY2025 annual report presents a single ratio table with margins, ROE, ROCE, debt-to-equity, interest coverage, capacity utilisation and production per employee. The reported figures were: plant capacity utilisation 66.51%, ROE 3.46%, ROCE 12.62%, interest coverage 1.50 times and EBITDA-to-sales 18.68%. These are the company’s FY2025 figures, not sector benchmarks; the source is its 2025 annual report. The low utilisation and modest interest cover would warrant questions about cycle position, pricing, debt maturities and cash generation before any valuation conclusion.
Cement valuation
EV/EBITDA should be paired with utilisation, expected realisations, energy costs, freight, maintenance capex and net debt. P/E based on peak-cycle profit can look deceptively low. Compare a normalized mid-cycle margin and stress the business for weaker construction demand, lower prices and higher fuel costs.
Choosing valuation multiples by sector
| Sector | Primary valuation lens | Ratios that must accompany it | Why a cheap multiple can mislead |
|---|---|---|---|
| Banking | P/B relative to sustainable ROE | ROA, NIM, NPA, provisions, capital and liquidity | Book value may be impaired; high ROE may rely on thin capital. |
| Defence | Normalized P/E or EV/EBITDA | Order conversion, margins, receivables, cash flow and concentration | Milestone timing or an unexecutable backlog can inflate earnings expectations. |
| Power | EV/EBITDA with net debt analysis | Tariffs, availability, utilisation, receivables, fuel and debt service | Leverage, regulatory disputes or merchant-price exposure may be underpriced. |
| Cement | EV/EBITDA on cycle-normalized earnings | Volume, realisation per tonne, costs, utilisation, capex and leverage | Peak-cycle margins can make P/E and EV/EBITDA look temporarily low. |
Always align the market-price date with the financial period and state whether the denominator is reported or forecast. Dividend yield is useful only after checking payout sustainability, debt covenants, regulatory capital and the cash needed for maintenance or growth investment.
Best Value
Build a peer comparison that leads to a decision
For each sector, compare at least two genuine alternatives using the same template. A useful table has these columns:
- Business model and geographic exposure.
- Revenue or loan growth and the quality of that growth.
- Profitability: margin, ROA, ROE or ROCE, with a multi-year range.
- Cash conversion: operating cash flow, free cash flow and working-capital trend.
- Balance-sheet resilience: debt, net debt-to-EBITDA, capital or coverage buffers.
- Sector operating measures: asset quality for banks, order execution for defence, tariffs and availability for power, and tonnes and unit costs for cement.
- Regulatory, contract, customer-concentration and cycle exposure.
- Valuation and the explicit reason the company deserves its multiple.
Do not rank solely by the lowest ratio. A stronger company can deserve a premium because it converts profit into cash, carries less risk or earns superior returns on reinvested capital. Conversely, a high multiple requires assumptions about growth, margins and financing that you should write down and test.
Stress tests and warning signs
Use simple downside cases rather than pretending that the latest ratio is permanent:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Higher funding costs: re-run interest coverage, bank NIM and power-project debt service after an increase in borrowing rates.
- Lower utilisation: reduce plant-load or capacity utilisation for power and cement, then recalculate ROCE and cash generation.
- Delayed contracts: push defence milestones and collections back by one or two reporting periods and examine liquidity.
- Tariff or receivable disputes: delay collection of regulatory or utility receivables and test covenant headroom.
- Fuel and freight inflation: increase cement and thermal-generation input costs where pass-through is incomplete.
- Credit deterioration: raise bank slippages and credit costs while holding operating expenses constant to see how quickly capital and ROE change.
Warning signs include profit rising while operating cash falls, receivables growing faster than revenue, repeated reclassification of debt or NPAs, unexplained margin expansion, covenant waivers, large related-party balances, and capex that repeatedly misses its commissioning date. Each requires a filing-level explanation before you treat the headline ratio as reliable.
A repeatable checklist before buying or comparing
- Download the latest annual report, regulatory filing and investor presentation for every company.
- Record period, consolidation scope, currency, units and each ratio definition.
- Recalculate key ratios from the statements and reconcile differences with published figures.
- Build sector-specific peer tables and a separate cross-sector risk summary.
- Read cash-flow statements, debt maturities, contingent liabilities and auditor notes, not just the income statement.
- Check the operating metric that explains the ratio: NIM and NPAs, order conversion, tariffs and utilisation, or tonnes and costs.
- Run the relevant stress cases and note the resulting coverage, liquidity and capital buffers.
- State what is known, what is estimated and which data are stale or definition-dependent.
Ratios describe relationships between reported numbers. They become an investment analysis only when you connect those relationships to the business model, test the cash and balance sheet, and explain why the market price is justified.
