Evaluate it in three linked passes: measure revenue growth and its quality, test whether margins and cash generation are durable, then compare dated valuation ratios with Apple’s history and an appropriate peer group. Apple’s fiscal 2025 filing gives a useful operating starting point: revenue was $416.161 billion, up 6% from $391.035 billion, while Services grew 14% to $109.158 billion.
The worksheet below shows exactly what to collect, how to calculate each ratio, what the fiscal 2025 numbers indicate, and how to turn the results into a dated valuation judgment rather than a guess based on a headline P/E.

What an Apple stock evaluation must answer
A complete analysis answers four separate questions:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Growth: Is sales growth accelerating, slowing, or concentrated in one category?
- Profitability: Are gross, operating, and net margins stable as the business mix changes?
- Cash and per-share value: Do profits convert into cash, and are buybacks changing diluted share count and EPS?
- Price: What expectations are embedded in the current market quote?
Keep operating results and market valuation separate. The fiscal year in Apple’s financial statements has a fixed end date; a stock quote changes every trading day. Record the quote date, currency, fiscal period, diluted-EPS period, share count, cash, debt, and whether every multiple is trailing or forward before drawing a conclusion.

Start with a consistent data set
Use Apple’s latest Form 10-K, quarterly reports, and SEC filings for GAAP income-statement, balance-sheet, cash-flow, and share-count data. For a meaningful trend, place at least three fiscal years in the same worksheet. Do not mix a fiscal-year denominator with a calendar-year price or combine GAAP EPS with an adjusted earnings figure.
Minimum fields to record
- Total net sales and sales by reportable category.
- Cost of sales, gross profit, operating income, net income, and diluted EPS.
- R&D, selling, general and administrative expense, and total operating expenses.
- Operating cash flow, capital expenditures, and the resulting free-cash-flow measure you define.
- Cash and marketable securities, total debt, and diluted weighted-average shares.
- Share price and quote timestamp, plus the fiscal period used for each denominator.
Label one-time items, tariff effects, currency movements, acquisitions, and accounting changes. A ratio is only comparable when its numerator and denominator describe the same period and accounting basis.
Pass one: measure revenue growth and its quality
Apple’s fiscal 2025 sales picture
Apple reported fiscal 2025 total net sales of $416.161 billion, up 6% from $391.035 billion in fiscal 2024. The category detail is more informative than the headline:
| Category | FY2025 sales | Year-over-year change | What to examine |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone | $209.586 billion | Up 4% | Whether unit, pricing, and upgrade-cycle changes support growth |
| Mac | $33.708 billion | Up 12% | Release timing, platform adoption, and comparison with an unusually weak or strong prior year |
| iPad | $28.023 billion | Up 5% | Product refreshes and education or enterprise demand |
| Wearables, Home and Accessories | $35.686 billion | Down 4% | Whether weakness is cyclical, product-specific, or structural |
| Services | $109.158 billion | Up 14% | Advertising, App Store, and cloud-services growth and its durability |
Services represented about 26.2% of fiscal 2025 sales ($109.158 billion divided by $416.161 billion). Its 14% growth was attributed primarily to higher advertising, App Store, and cloud-services sales. That mix can lift companywide margins, but you should test whether growth comes from recurring usage, price increases, a temporary comparison, or a change in reporting mix.
Calculate growth, then test breadth
For each period, calculate:
Revenue growth = (current-period revenue − prior-period revenue) ÷ prior-period revenue
Then calculate each category’s share of company sales and its contribution to the dollar increase. A company can post 6% consolidated growth while most categories decline if one large, high-growth segment offsets them. Conversely, broad mid-single-digit growth may be more resilient than a higher headline driven by one launch.

- Compare the latest growth rate with Apple’s own three- to five-year history.
- Separate price, volume, currency, and mix where management discloses them.
- Check regional performance and channel inventory in the filing and earnings materials.
- Look for growth in both reported revenue and underlying demand, rather than a single quarter.
Questions that distinguish durable from fragile growth
- Is Services growth still healthy when compared with a normal prior-year base?
- Are hardware customers buying more expensive configurations, or are units rising?
- Does a category decline reflect a product transition that could reverse, or a shrinking addressable market?
- Are tariffs, foreign-exchange rates, or supply constraints changing reported growth?
- Is growth broad enough to withstand a weak iPhone launch or a delayed upgrade cycle?
Pass two: evaluate gross, operating, and net margins
Use the three core formulas
- Gross margin:
(revenue − cost of sales) ÷ revenue - Operating margin:
operating income ÷ revenue - Net margin:
net income ÷ revenue
Calculate each for at least three fiscal years from GAAP figures. Gross margin shows product and service economics; operating margin adds R&D and selling costs; net margin also reflects interest, other income or expense, and taxes. Analyze margins in that order so a tax or financing change does not get mistaken for an operating improvement.

What fiscal 2025 margins show
| Measure | FY2025 | FY2024 comparison or context |
|---|---|---|
| Total gross margin percentage | 46.9% | 46.2% in FY2024 |
| Total gross margin dollars | $195.201 billion | Use the same GAAP definition for prior years |
| Products gross margin percentage | 36.8% | Prior-year percentage not stated in the cited filing summary |
| Services gross margin percentage | 75.4% | Prior-year percentage not stated in the cited filing summary |
| R&D expense | $34.550 billion, 8% of sales | Build a multi-year percentage trend from each filing |
| SG&A expense | $27.601 billion, 7% of sales | Build a multi-year percentage trend from each filing |
| Total operating expenses | $62.151 billion, 15% of sales | Build a multi-year percentage trend from each filing |
Total gross margin improved from 46.2% to 46.9%. The segment split explains why mix matters: Services carried a 75.4% gross margin, while Products carried 36.8%. Apple said Products margin percentage decreased mainly because of product mix and tariff costs, partly offset by other favorable costs. Services margin percentage increased mainly because of a different services mix, partly offset by higher costs.
Do not treat the 46.9% figure as a permanent floor. Apple cautions that gross margins can be volatile and face downward pressure because of numerous factors, including those discussed in its risk factors. A durable margin thesis therefore needs several years of results and a sensitivity case for mix, tariffs, component costs, currency, and pricing.
Move from gross margin to operating margin
Operating margin reveals whether Apple is converting gross profit into operating earnings efficiently. Divide operating income by the same period’s revenue, then compare the result with R&D and SG&A as percentages of sales. If revenue grows faster than operating expenses, operating margin may expand; if Apple increases investment ahead of a product or platform opportunity, margin may temporarily contract for a deliberate reason.
Fiscal 2025 R&D was $34.550 billion, or 8% of sales; SG&A was $27.601 billion, or 7%; and total operating expenses were $62.151 billion, or 15%. Those percentages should be recalculated for every historical year rather than assumed to remain constant.

Check net margin and EPS separately
Net margin includes taxes and non-operating items, so reconcile it to operating margin. Then examine diluted EPS and diluted weighted-average shares. A falling share count can make EPS grow faster than net income, while dilution can have the opposite effect. Record net income, diluted EPS, and diluted shares for the identical fiscal period and state whether buybacks, employee awards, or other issuance changed the count.

Pass three: test cash conversion and balance-sheet risk
Accounting profit is more persuasive when it becomes cash. From the cash-flow statement, record operating cash flow and capital expenditures, then define free cash flow consistently:
Free cash flow = operating cash flow − capital expenditures
Compare free cash flow with net income over several years. Investigate a widening gap rather than assuming it is benign: working-capital timing, supplier financing, tax payments, restructuring, or capitalized costs can all affect conversion.

Use net debt in enterprise-value calculations. If cash exceeds debt, net debt is negative and increases enterprise value less than equity value; state that convention explicitly. Do not substitute a vague “cash-rich” description for the actual balances.

Use valuation ratios only after the operating analysis
The cited filing information does not include a live share price or a timestamped valuation table. Therefore, no current Apple P/E, forward P/E, EV/EBITDA, or price-to-free-cash-flow number can be stated here without adding a current market-data source. Enter the quote immediately before publication or before making an investment decision, and label the timestamp.

|---|---|---|---|
| Trailing P/E | Share price ÷ diluted EPS for the last reported period | Shows what investors pay for already reported GAAP earnings | Can look temporarily high after an earnings trough or low at a cyclical peak |
| Forward P/E | Share price ÷ forecast EPS | Tests the market’s price against an explicitly documented next-period estimate | Depends on forecast assumptions; identify the provider, date, and estimate changes |
| EV/EBITDA | (equity value + debt − cash) ÷ EBITDA | Compares operations while reducing capital-structure differences | EBITDA excludes depreciation, amortization, taxes, interest, and capital needs |
| Price-to-free-cash-flow | Equity value ÷ free cash flow | Connects price with cash available after capital expenditures | Free-cash-flow definitions and working-capital timing vary |
| Earnings yield | Diluted EPS ÷ share price | The inverse of trailing P/E, useful for comparing with other yields | Still depends on the selected earnings period and GAAP basis |
Build equity value and enterprise value correctly
- Record the closing share price and exact quote time.
- Multiply price by the chosen diluted share count to estimate equity value; explain whether the count is current or a period average.
- Add total debt and subtract cash and marketable securities to obtain enterprise value.
- Use the same fiscal-period EBITDA or free cash flow in the denominator, and label any forward estimate.
Never present a “live” multiple without a timestamp. A price move, an earnings release, a buyback, or a revised forecast can change the result even when the business has not changed.

Apple’s historical range
Collect quarterly or monthly trailing P/E, forward P/E, EV/EBITDA, and price-to-free-cash-flow observations for a defined five- to ten-year window. Mark unusual periods such as pandemic demand, major product launches, recession fears, or an earnings trough. Compare the current multiple with median, lower-quartile, and upper-quartile levels, but explain why the current growth and margin regime is comparable—or not—to each historical period.
Peer comparison
Choose peers with similar economics rather than simply the largest technology companies. State the inclusion rules, fiscal-year differences, currency, and whether each ratio uses GAAP or an adjusted measure. Compare:
- Revenue growth and the share coming from recurring or service revenue.
- Gross, operating, and net margins, including the effect of business mix.
- Operating cash-flow and free-cash-flow conversion.
- Net debt or net cash relative to operating earnings.
- Trailing and forward valuation multiples on a consistent date.
A premium multiple is defensible only when the company has credible growth, durable margins, and strong cash generation. A discount may signal slower growth, higher risk, a temporary earnings peak, or a data mismatch. The multiple alone cannot identify which explanation is correct.
A repeatable Apple valuation worksheet
- Freeze the date. Write the quote timestamp, currency, exchange, and latest fiscal period.
- Load three or more years of GAAP statements. Enter revenue by category, cost of sales, gross profit, operating income, net income, diluted EPS, and diluted shares.
- Calculate growth. Compute company and category growth, sales mix, and each category’s dollar contribution.
- Calculate margins. Compute total, Products, and Services gross margins where disclosed, plus operating and net margins.
- Explain changes. Attribute movements to mix, pricing, volume, tariffs, component costs, currency, R&D, SG&A, taxes, and share count only when the filing supports the attribution.
- Reconcile cash. Calculate operating cash flow, capital expenditures, free cash flow, cash, debt, and net debt.
- Calculate dated multiples. Produce trailing P/E, forward P/E, EV/EBITDA, price-to-free-cash-flow, and earnings yield with every denominator labeled.
- Run scenarios. Test a slower Services growth rate, weaker hardware sales, lower gross margin, higher operating expenses, and a different share count.
- Compare. Place the results beside Apple’s historical range and a consistent peer set.
- Write the judgment. State which growth, margin, and cash assumptions the current price requires and what evidence would invalidate them.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Using an undated P/E
Problem: A quoted multiple may use a different price, fiscal period, or EPS convention than your analysis.
Fix: Save the quote time, denominator period, GAAP or adjusted label, and source each time you calculate it.
Best Value
Projecting Services growth indefinitely
Problem: A 14% year-over-year increase is treated as a permanent forecast.
Fix: Test several growth rates and examine advertising, App Store, and cloud-services drivers separately.
Ignoring mix in gross margin
Problem: A higher consolidated margin is credited entirely to cost cutting.
Fix: Separate Products’ 36.8% margin from Services’ 75.4% margin and identify mix, tariff, and cost effects.
Confusing net margin with operating performance
Problem: Tax or interest changes are interpreted as better product economics.
Fix: Move from gross margin to operating margin to net margin and reconcile each step.
Mixing share counts
Problem: Current shares outstanding are paired with annual EPS, or basic shares are paired with diluted EPS.
Fix: Use diluted weighted-average shares for EPS and disclose the convention used for equity value.
Treating EBITDA as cash
Problem: EV/EBITDA is read as a free-cash-flow valuation.
Fix: Check capital expenditures, working capital, taxes, and cash conversion separately.
How to reach a dated valuation judgment
After completing the worksheet, write the conclusion as an expectations statement: “At the recorded price, Apple is priced for approximately these revenue, margin, cash-flow, and share-count outcomes.” Then compare those outcomes with the company’s demonstrated history and the peer range.
Call the stock attractively valued only when the required assumptions are achievable with a margin of safety. Call it fully valued when the price already assumes a continuation of strong growth and margins with little room for disappointment. Call it overvalued only when the price requires growth, profitability, or cash generation materially above a realistic base case. If the evidence is mixed, say which variable—Services growth, hardware demand, gross margin, operating expense, or the market multiple—would change the conclusion.
