Evaluate an AI finance tool against a specific decision, not a generic claim of “AI accuracy.” Define what it must forecast or analyze, who will use the output, the time horizon, the cost of a wrong answer, and whether the system only advises a person or can trigger an action. Then test its data, performance, failure modes, safeguards, and ongoing oversight against that use.
A tool that extracts figures from filings, one that forecasts cash flow, and a generative assistant that drafts market commentary do different jobs and can fail in different ways. A polished demo—or a strong result on an unrelated task—is not proof that a tool is fit for your financial decision.

Start by defining what the tool is supposed to do
Write a short use-case specification before looking at vendor claims. It gives your team a fair basis for comparison and makes it harder to confuse one capability with another.
Record the decision and forecast
- Decision and user: Who will use the result, and what action could it affect?
- Target and output: Is the system estimating revenue, cash flow, demand, credit risk, a market variable, or something else? Does it return a point estimate, a probability, a range, an extracted fact, or narrative analysis?
- Horizon and coverage: Specify the forecast period, geography, entities or assets, and historical time span that matter.
- Current process: Record what the organization does now, including any existing model or human review, so the AI can be compared with a relevant baseline.
- Cost of errors: Consider the consequences of over- and under-estimates, false positives and false negatives, and whether those costs differ.
- Autonomy: State whether the system informs a person, drafts material for approval, or initiates an action.
Keep distinct tasks distinct. A forecast, document extraction, filing summary, scenario, and explanation of a result should each have their own acceptance criteria. Success at summarizing a report does not establish forecast quality.

Check the data before judging the model
Data is part of the system being evaluated: weak, stale, unauthorized, or unrepresentative inputs can undermine an otherwise sound method. FINRA’s AI guidance discusses risks from insufficient, invalid, stale, untested, or out-of-distribution data, as well as data quality and access controls.
Ask for data lineage and limitations
- Which sources feed the product, and what is their historical and geographic coverage?
- How often are inputs updated? How are revisions, missing values, transformations, and delayed feeds handled?
- What known gaps, quality checks, and verification processes apply to external data?
- Are the data licensed and authorized for this use?
- Do the inputs represent the entities, customers, markets, and periods relevant to your decision, or could coverage gaps create bias?
Test freshness and accuracy on the actual markets, entities, and periods you expect to use. More data is not automatically better: additional feeds can introduce noise, mismatched definitions, rights issues, or new failure points.
Validate performance on the task you actually have
Ask the vendor for the model’s conceptual basis, design, development data, limitations, and prior performance. Then perform an independent evaluation using relevant cases that were not used to build or tune the system. The Federal Reserve’s model-risk guidance discusses validation and ongoing monitoring for vendor products as well as traditional quantitative models; its principles are not a universal legal rule for every AI system.

Build a fair test
- Set aside test data. Use periods or cases not used in development or tuning. For forecasts, prevent leakage: information that would not have been available at forecast time must not enter the historical test.
- Choose a suitable baseline. Compare the tool with a simple forecast and your organization’s current process under the same conditions.
- Use measures suited to the output. A point forecast, probability, and range forecast do not call for identical evaluation. Select measures that reflect the target and decision, and examine the direction and cost of errors—not just an aggregate score.
- Test difficult conditions. Include volatile periods, unusual events, missing or delayed inputs, changes in coverage, and shifts in the data. FINRA’s guidance describes testing across stressed scenarios and new datasets.
- Record the setup. Preserve the data period, inputs, model version, assumptions, scoring method, and results so another reviewer can understand or reproduce the test.
There is no single accuracy threshold that suits every financial forecast. A tolerable error depends on the target, decision, and consequences. A historical backtest is evidence about performance on its test conditions, not a guarantee of future results.
Probe explanations, robustness, and failure modes
Ask what assumptions and inputs matter, why a result was produced, where the tool is known to fail, and how it behaves when inputs change or become incomplete. Ask reviewers to investigate anomalous outputs and challenge the result rather than accept a fluent explanation at face value.
FINRA recommends considering explainability and human review where applicable. NIST’s voluntary AI Risk Management Framework identifies characteristics including validity and reliability, safety, security and resilience, accountability and transparency, explainability and interpretability, privacy enhancement, and management of fairness and harmful bias. An explanation can help a reviewer inspect a result; it does not prove that the prediction is correct.

Review privacy, security, and vendor controls
Before connecting financial data, establish how the deployment handles it. FINRA identifies privacy, cybersecurity, outsourcing and vendor management, and books-and-records considerations in the securities-firm context. Confirm the actual provider’s terms and technical controls rather than assuming one vendor’s practices apply to another.

Questions to resolve before deployment
- Is confidential customer, firm, or market data retained, used to train or improve a model, shared with subprocessors, or transferred across jurisdictions?
- How are authentication, authorization, encryption, logging, and incident response handled?
- How are model versions and material changes identified and communicated?
- What documentation, support, audit cooperation, continuity arrangements, and exit options are available?
- Can the provider give enough information to support independent validation?
The Federal Reserve says validation applies to vendor products even when proprietary details are unavailable, and calls for understanding design, development data, and performance as far as possible. If a vendor withholds information, document which validation questions remain unanswered and decide whether compensating controls are adequate for the risk. If they are not, do not treat the missing evidence as a pass.
Compare alternatives under the same conditions
Use identical tasks, data, dates, and scoring wherever possible. Keep a written record of what each product can and cannot establish for your use case.

A vendor’s own benchmark can be useful context, but label it as vendor-reported and check whether its data, task, and scoring match your intended use. Do not rank tools on incomparable evidence.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Set governance and monitoring before launch
Assign an owner and define permitted uses, approval authority, human review, escalation, overrides, records, and retirement responsibilities before anyone relies on the output. Match controls to the impact and autonomy of the system: a tool that can trigger consequential actions needs stronger guardrails than one used to draft an analysis for review.
After launch, monitor performance, errors, bias, data changes, drift, model versions, and relevant business conditions against task-appropriate benchmarks. Define in advance when a person must investigate, when use should be paused, and how to roll back to a prior process. FINRA’s 2026 Annual Regulatory Oversight Report specifically discusses logging prompts and outputs, tracking model versions and dates, human-in-the-loop review, and regular checks for errors or bias in GenAI monitoring; apply those practices to the relevant deployment rather than assuming all forecasting systems are generative assistants.

Understand which guidance applies to your organization
FINRA’s Regulatory Notice 24-09, published June 27, 2024, says existing rules and securities laws continue to apply when member firms use GenAI. It describes considerations including technology governance, model risk, data privacy and integrity, and model reliability and accuracy; depending on the activity, supervision, communications, recordkeeping, or fair-dealing obligations may also matter. This is securities-firm guidance, not blanket legal advice for every company or jurisdiction.
The Federal Reserve’s Supervisory Guidance on Model Risk Management page identifies revised interagency guidance dated April 17, 2026. The principles discussed there address traditional statistical and quantitative models and non-generative, non-agentic AI models. NIST’s AI Risk Management Framework is voluntary. Use the guidance relevant to your organization and deployment, and consult qualified legal or compliance advisers when a regulatory obligation is uncertain.
