Then follow the steps for your symptom—launch or in-game crashes, low frame rates and stuttering, or long loading times—and change one thing at a time.
Identify your game build before troubleshooting
CD PROJEKT RED announced the free Remastered upgrade for owners as available on September 29, 2026. Since the publisher’s requirements now cover both existing tiers and minimums announced for a next update, do not assume that a requirements list for one build applies to another. Check the version shown beneath the game title in the main menu and note which storefront you use. The publisher’s system requirements page distinguishes the published tiers; its updated requirements notice identifies the newer minimums as beginning with the next update.

- Record the version/build shown in the main menu and your storefront.
- Note whether you launch in DirectX 11 or DirectX 12, if your installed build offers both.
- Record whether mods, trainers, or console commands are enabled.
The publisher’s support form requests these details and advises updating older builds before reporting a problem. If you deliberately stay on an older build or use mods, note that rather than changing versions as a first troubleshooting step. Back up saves before making changes; the support page lists their location as %userprofile%DocumentsThe Witcher 3gamesaves.
Check requirements for the build you actually run
The requirements page includes legacy DirectX 11 minimum and recommended tiers, as well as DirectX 12 high and ultra tiers. Those older specifications include 50 GB of disk space, but they are not a substitute for the minimums announced for the next update. CD PROJEKT RED’s newer baseline specifies Windows 11, DirectX 12, 12 GB RAM, a 70 GB SSD, an Intel Core i5-8400 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600, and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 or AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT 8GB. Apply that baseline when it is effective for your installed build; do not treat it as proof that every previous installation already requires the same hardware.

- Play as a highly trained monster slayer for hire.
- Built for endless adventure, the massive open world of The Witcher sets new standards in terms of size, depth and complexity.
- The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Game of the Year edition brings together the base game and all the additional content released to date.
The publisher says Windows 7 and Windows 8 support was discontinued on May 21, 2024. Its notice says Windows 10 may still run the game, but it will no longer be tested and future compatibility or performance is not guaranteed. For the exact tier details, use CD PROJEKT RED’s requirements page and match the list to your build.
Storage and performance claims need the same distinction: the updated notice says, “Furthermore, to support the game’s latest technical enhancements, an SSD is now required.” The publisher associates SSDs with faster loading and smoother asset streaming, but that does not establish that an SSD cures crashes or every stutter. Consider a graphics-card upgrade only if your GPU falls below the applicable requirements for the settings you want to use.
Fix crashes or launch failures
CD PROJEKT RED’s crash troubleshooting guidance recommends checking system requirements, closing applications that are not needed, verifying game files, and reinstalling graphics drivers. Work through these steps in order, testing after each one so you can identify a change that matters.

- Close nonessential applications temporarily. The publisher specifically includes antivirus or antimalware software among applications to close for troubleshooting. Restore protection afterward; do not leave security software disabled as a permanent workaround.
- Check the PC for malware or viruses. CD PROJEKT RED notes that malware can sometimes cause crashes; this is a check, not a claim that malware is the likely cause.
- Verify the game files. Use the file-integrity or verification option in your own storefront. The exact menu path differs by store, so follow that store’s current instructions.
- Clean-install the graphics driver. If the crash started immediately after a driver update, try installing the previous driver version instead. Driver changes are troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed fixes.
Improve low FPS, stuttering, choppy play, or long loading
If your PC meets the minimum requirements for the build, CD PROJEKT RED’s performance guidance recommends a clean graphics-driver install, game-file verification, disabling overlays, and closing unnecessary applications. Apply one change at a time and test in the same place or situation where the problem usually occurs.
Rank #3
- Italian edition.
- Clean-install the graphics driver. If the problem began right after a driver update, install the previous version and report the issue to the publisher.
- Verify the game files. Run the verification option provided by your storefront; it checks for damaged or missing files without requiring an immediate full reinstall.
- Turn off overlays temporarily. The support guidance names Discord, Ubisoft Connect, and Galaxy as examples. Disable only the overlays you use, then retest.
- Close unnecessary background apps. The publisher calls out hardware-monitoring software and antivirus/antimalware among examples. Close them temporarily for the test, then reopen them.
- Check loading and asset streaming separately from crashes. An SSD is part of the newly announced minimum and is associated by the publisher with faster loads and smoother asset streaming. That is not evidence that replacing a drive will fix every frame-rate drop or crash.
Do not assume DirectX 11 or DirectX 12 is universally faster or more stable. Where both modes are available in your installed build, compare them only as a controlled test: keep the same location, graphics settings, and other conditions, then switch back if the other mode does not help.

Give support enough detail to distinguish a launch failure from a location-specific or continuous performance issue. CD PROJEKT RED asks players to include a DxDiag report and the game version, platform, DirectX mode, and mod status. Explain whether the symptom occurs at launch, only in a particular location, or throughout play; attach a short video if possible.
- Press
Windows key + R, typeDxDiag, and press Enter. - In the DirectX Diagnostic Tool, select Save All Information… and attach the resulting report.
- If the problem happens in a specific location, attach the relevant save. The support instructions request all files in the save folder and accept a compressed archive.
- Include your storefront, version/build, DirectX mode, and whether you use mods, trainers, or console commands.
