To evaluate an AI model for scientific research, first define the decision it is meant to support, then test it on data and under conditions that resemble the intended workflow. Choose measures that match the claim, compare candidates fairly, quantify uncertainty where possible, and document the full system—not just the model. A benchmark score is evidence about a defined test, not proof that a model is useful or reliable across scientific work.
There is no universal “best” model for scientific research. A defensible choice depends on the discipline, task, data, users, operating conditions, and consequences of error. The process below helps researchers determine what to test, how to interpret the result, and what evidence is still needed before relying on a model.

Start with the research decision, not the model leaderboard
Before choosing an evaluation dataset or metric, write down what decision the model will support and where its output enters the research process. “Summarize papers” or “analyze images” is not yet a testable use case. Specify the input, the expected output, who will use it, what happens after the output is produced, and what counts as a correct or useful result.

These are different tasks, even if both are described as “AI for research.”

Write a use-case specification
- Research objective: What scientific question or operational decision is the system intended to support?
- Task: What transformation does it perform, such as classification, extraction, generation, ranking, or assistance in an interactive analysis?
- Inputs and outputs: Identify the data modality, format, expected output, and any required citations, confidence information, or provenance.
- Users and workflow: Say who sees the output, what expertise they have, whether they verify it, and what downstream steps depend on it.
- Success and failure: Define what useful performance means and which errors are unacceptable, costly, or recoverable.
- Operating conditions: Record constraints such as available tools, retrieval sources, interface, time, compute, privacy, and access to human review.
Separate model capability from system performance. The model is only one part of a deployed workflow: prompts, retrieval, external tools, preprocessing, user interfaces, and human intervention can all change the outcome. If the research question concerns the complete system, evaluate that system as a whole. If the goal is to compare model capabilities, hold the surrounding conditions constant as far as practical.
NIST AI 800-2, an initial public draft dated January 2026, focuses on automated benchmark evaluations of language models and similar text-output general-purpose models. Its scope should not be mistaken for a complete evaluation recipe for every scientific AI system, such as a specialized image-analysis pipeline or an interactive laboratory tool.
Choose an evaluation method that can support the claim
A method is appropriate only if it can answer the question being asked. Automated benchmarks are useful for structured tasks with relevant items and answers that can be checked consistently. They are less able, by themselves, to establish whether a system works in a complex scientific setting involving users, changing context, or consequential decisions.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →NIST AI 800-2 states, “Not all evaluation objectives can be met by automated benchmark evaluations.” The practical implication is to choose a method based on the intended claim, rather than treating a benchmark as the default for every use case.
| Evaluation approach | Best suited to | What it can establish | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Automated benchmark | Structured tasks with representative examples and verifiable or consistently scorable answers | Performance on the selected items under the specified test conditions | Does not automatically establish performance on other populations, tasks, or workflow conditions |
| Human-subject or user testing | Questions about how people interact with, understand, or rely on a system | Observed user or participant outcomes under the study design | Results depend on the participants, tasks, setting, and measures chosen |
| Red teaming | Probing for failures, unsafe behavior, or weaknesses under deliberately challenging inputs | Examples of vulnerabilities or failure modes found in the tested conditions | Finding a failure demonstrates a risk; not finding one does not prove that none exists |
| Field testing | Assessing behavior in a real or realistic operational workflow | Evidence about performance in the observed setting and its practical constraints | Field results may be specific to that context and can be affected by changing conditions |
| Post-deployment monitoring | Tracking a system after it is used in practice | Signals about ongoing behavior, drift, and emerging issues in the monitored use | Requires suitable monitoring and does not replace pre-use evaluation |
These methods can complement one another. A benchmark can screen candidates, while expert review or user testing can examine whether outputs are interpretable and useful. Red teaming can probe risks that ordinary test items miss. Field evaluation or monitoring can reveal problems that only appear in the actual workflow. NIST’s 2026 ARIA manual describes a broader approach that combines model testing, red teaming, and user testing.

OECD’s 2023 report, Artificial Intelligence in Science, emphasizes that scientific evaluations should be justified in relation to their purpose and should document limitations and experimental factors. A high score on a task that differs from the intended scientific use does not establish that the model is useful in that use.
Build a test set that represents the intended workflow
A dataset is not representative simply because it contains scientific material. Its population, time period, domain, modality, and input conditions should match the claim. A set of polished abstracts, for example, may not represent scanned documents, supplementary files, noisy measurements, or the particular instruments and protocols used in a target workflow.
Describe the data before scoring models
- Source and provenance: Record where the material came from, how it was collected, and any permissions or access restrictions.
- Population and domain: Describe what kinds of studies, samples, organisms, instruments, or research settings are represented, as relevant to the task.
- Time period: State when the material was produced or collected. This matters when terminology, protocols, or scientific knowledge changes over time.
- Modality and format: Identify whether the inputs are text, images, sequences, tables, measurements, or mixtures, and note transformations such as cropping or normalization.
- Inclusion and exclusion rules: Explain which items entered the evaluation and why any were omitted.
- Known limitations: Note gaps, imbalances, labeling uncertainty, or other features that affect how results should be interpreted.
Consider whether the evaluation data overlap with training data or material that may have appeared in a model’s development. Public benchmark exposure can make a score difficult to interpret as evidence of generalization. Temporal separation may help when the intended claim concerns performance on later material, but it does not by itself resolve every form of contamination or mismatch.
NIST’s AI Test, Evaluation, Validation and Verification (AITE) program describes the use of blind data in a sequestered environment to mitigate train/test contamination. Its initial science-related tasks include quantum science, genomics, and public-safety image analysis with vision-language models. This is an example of one test design, not a requirement that every research evaluation use a centralized testbed. Program schedules and task details can change, so check the program’s current materials before relying on them.
Keep a final test set separate from development and tuning. If you repeatedly inspect its results and adjust prompts, thresholds, or other choices in response, it is no longer an untouched test for those choices. Use development data for iteration and reserve final evaluation data for the stated comparison. When data cannot be shared, explain the restriction and provide enough metadata or controlled-access instructions to let others assess the evaluation design.

Define metrics that reflect scientific usefulness
Choose primary and secondary measures before examining the final results where practical. A metric should represent a property that matters to the research decision, not merely one that is easy to compute. Explain how outputs are scored, which errors count, and what happens to missing, invalid, or ambiguous responses.
Recommended Free Tools
For a classification task, overall accuracy may hide the difference between false positives and false negatives. For extraction, exact-match scoring may penalize harmless formatting differences while overlooking whether the extracted value is supported by the source. For generated explanations, a fluent answer is not necessarily a scientifically correct one. Select measures with those trade-offs in mind and, where needed, pair automated scores with expert assessment.
Distinguish the measured score from the broader claim
NIST AI 800-3, discussed in a NIST announcement dated February 19, 2026, distinguishes benchmark accuracy—performance on the items actually included—from generalized accuracy—performance over a wider universe of similar items. These are not interchangeable quantities. A model’s observed score describes the benchmark and its conditions; a claim about broader performance requires assumptions about how those items relate to the wider task and how the evaluation sample was obtained.
Make that target explicit in the report. If the evaluation only supports a statement about a fixed set of items, say so. If the goal is to generalize beyond them, describe the target population and the statistical assumptions that connect the observed sample to it. NIST AI 800-3 discusses generalized linear mixed models as one promising approach for evaluation statistics; it does not establish a single statistical method that fits every research task.
Account for variation and uncertainty
Some outputs vary across runs or depend on sampling settings. In those cases, state the number of runs and the inference settings, and report an appropriate summary of variation. Where uncertainty intervals or another justified uncertainty analysis are applicable, include them alongside sample sizes and the score. Explain assumptions behind the analysis rather than presenting a single number as self-explanatory.

A small difference between model scores may not be meaningful, especially when the test set is limited or the results vary across runs or subsets. Avoid declaring a winner from a narrow gap without evidence that the difference is reliable and relevant to the decision. NIST AI 800-3 warns that evaluation analyses can rely on implicit assumptions, conflate different performance concepts, or fail to quantify uncertainty.
Compare candidates under fair, reproducible conditions
A comparison is interpretable only when candidates face equivalent conditions—or when deviations are clearly justified. Decide the rules before running the comparison and apply them consistently. Include strong, relevant baselines rather than selecting only a few convenient competitors. A simple or existing workflow can be an informative baseline if it reflects what researchers would otherwise use.
- Fix the evaluation data and scoring rules. Give each candidate the same eligible examples, answer keys or reference judgments, exclusions, and scoring procedure.
- Standardize prompts and tools. Hold prompt wording, retrieval access, external tools, context supplied, and opportunities to revise outputs constant when the comparison is intended to isolate model differences. If a candidate requires a different setup, report and justify it.
- Set comparable resource constraints. Document relevant limits on compute, time, context, or human review. Different operating budgets can change the result and should not be hidden behind a model name.
- Keep tuning away from the final test. Use separate development material for prompt or parameter changes, and disclose any tuning performed.
- Record intervention. State whether people edited inputs, selected outputs, corrected answers, or otherwise intervened during the run.
- Preserve the configuration. Record each model and version, evaluation date, inference parameters, prompts or templates, relevant hardware and software conditions, and the tools used.
OECD’s guidance for scientific work calls for algorithms under investigation to be treated equally and for limitations arising from algorithmic, implementation, and observation factors to be discussed. Equal treatment does not mean every candidate must be forced into identical settings if that would be inappropriate; it means the comparison rules and departures are transparent enough to interpret.

- Model name, version or release identifier, access date, and configuration.
- Prompts, templates, system instructions, retrieval settings, tools, and inference parameters where applicable.
- Code, dependencies, installation steps, execution order, operating system, hardware, and resource requirements.

Best Value
A 2021 Nature Methods article on reproducibility in life-science machine learning presents reproducibility as graded: public data, models, and code provide a minimum level, while documented installation, execution, system, and deterministic details improve the ability to reproduce work. Its recommendations are specifically grounded in life-science machine learning, but the broader practice of documenting dependencies and execution conditions is useful wherever those factors affect results. OECD’s 2023 guidance likewise encourages sharing as much information as possible, including code and data alongside clear descriptions.
Interpret results without overclaiming
Read an evaluation result as a conditional finding: this system, in this configuration, produced these outcomes on this data, under these scoring and operating conditions. The more a conclusion reaches beyond those conditions, the more evidence and explicit assumptions it needs.
- A strong benchmark score supports a claim about performance on the benchmark as run. It does not alone prove usefulness in a different discipline, dataset, user population, or workflow.
- A failure on a relevant example can identify a practical limitation even when the average score is high. Inspect error types and their consequences, not only the aggregate.
- A close score comparison should be treated cautiously unless uncertainty and practical importance support the distinction.
- A successful user study supports conclusions about its participants and study conditions; it should not be presented as universal evidence for all scientific users.
- No observed failure is not proof that a model cannot fail, particularly when the test set is narrow or the use environment changes.
OECD’s 2023 report frames science as constructing models that predict what will happen in the real world. In an AI evaluation, that perspective is a reminder to connect measurements to the research task rather than treating a score as an end in itself. The report predates current model releases and does not establish present-day model performance.

Use the evidence in stages rather than collapsing every consideration into one leaderboard position. The right balance depends on the decision and the cost of error; the cited guidance does not provide universal weights for the criteria below.
| Decision question | Evidence to look for | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Does the test match the task and domain? | Representative inputs and outputs, clear workflow context, and relevant success criteria | A mismatch can make a high score irrelevant to the intended research use |
| Is the test data independent enough? | Documented provenance, separation from tuning, and consideration of overlap or benchmark exposure | Contamination can undermine confidence that results reflect general capability |
| Does the measure capture the intended capability? | Defined metrics, scoring rules, and an explicit account of what the metric misses | A convenient metric may reward behavior that does not serve the scientific decision |
| Are the results statistically interpretable? | Sample sizes, uncertainty or variation summaries, and stated assumptions | Without these, apparent differences may be unstable or overstated |
| Can others inspect or reproduce the result? | Versions, data and code access, parameters, dependencies, and execution details | Transparent records make scrutiny and follow-up possible |
| Does the task require evaluation with people or in practice? | Expert review, user testing, red teaming, field evidence, or monitoring as appropriate | Some workflow properties cannot be established by automated scoring alone |
A sensible outcome may be to select a candidate for further testing, restrict it to a narrow assistive role, require human verification, or decide that current evidence is insufficient. Treating “not yet established” as a valid result is preferable to extrapolating a benchmark score into a deployment claim.
What the available guidance can—and cannot—tell you
The cited resources provide evaluation methods and documentation principles, not a current cross-discipline leaderboard. NIST AI 800-2 is an initial public draft from January 2026, not a final standard in the material cited here. NIST AI 800-3 addresses statistical interpretation, including benchmark versus generalized accuracy, rather than naming an overall best model. AITE’s blind-testing approach illustrates one way to reduce contamination risk, while its tasks and schedules may evolve.
OECD’s 2023 report is useful for framing evaluation around scientific workflows and reproducibility, but it predates current model releases and cannot establish their current performance. The 2021 Nature Methods guidance addresses reproducibility in life-science machine learning. Together, these sources support a disciplined evaluation process; they do not support a universal model recommendation without a specified task, domain, data, constraints, and evaluation results.
