How Paleontologists Identify Bite Marks on Fossils

Paleontologists identify likely fossil bite marks by combining shape, texture, position, bone response, and context. A tooth trace does not automatically reveal its maker or prove a kill.

Paleontologists identify a likely bite mark by weighing the mark’s shape, dimensions, surface texture, position on the bone, and relationship to other damage or healing. A hole or groove alone is not enough: anatomy, disease, fractures, weathering, and excavation or preparation can leave misleading traces. Even when a feature is convincingly a tooth mark, identifying the animal that made it—and deciding whether it killed the animal or scavenged afterward—requires additional evidence.

What counts as evidence of a bite?

A tooth can leave several kinds of trace. A puncture or pit is a localized depression or perforation; a furrow or score is a longer groove. Serrated teeth may leave fine striations, while forceful contact can crush or impact the bone. These forms are clues, not a diagnostic checklist in which any single feature proves a bite.

Researchers examine the mark as a three-dimensional feature: its outline, length and width, edge shape, depth, and surface texture. They also look at how it relates to neighboring marks. Several marks in a pattern, or marks connected by channeling, may support a tooth-trace interpretation more than an isolated defect would. Still, patterns can be altered by breakage, preservation, or later damage, so they have to be read in context.

A 2020 study of Jurassic theropod traces considered crushing or impact damage as part of identifying bite marks and noted that tooth denticles can produce striations. Those observations show why researchers consider combinations of features rather than relying on a simple visual resemblance. A groove that looks like a tooth score is more persuasive when its form, texture, placement, and associations also make sense as a tooth trace.

How researchers distinguish a tooth trace from a look-alike

The key question is not just “Does this look like a bite?” but “Which explanation best accounts for the feature and its context?” A recent PLOS ONE case study of a Cretaceous Edmontosaurus annectens bonebed emphasizes assessing shape and proportions, margins and depth, surface texture, neighboring marks, anatomical location, and the bone’s condition and morphology. It also warns that normal anatomical openings and pathological lesions can be mistaken for tooth traces.

Possible explanation What researchers assess Why interpretation can be difficult
Tooth trace Whether the geometry, edge form, depth, texture, placement, and any associated marks fit tooth contact. A plausible-looking pit or groove is not decisive by itself; the surrounding bone and assemblage must also fit.
Normal anatomy Whether the feature occurs where an opening or other structure is expected in that bone and whether its form fits the bone’s morphology. Neurovascular openings can resemble punctures or holes.
Pathology or healing Whether the bone shows remodeling or other changes, and whether the feature’s margins and form fit a lesion or a healing response. A real tooth trace may itself be altered or obscured by healing, while a lesion can imitate a tooth mark.
Fracture or other surface damage How the feature relates to broken surfaces, other marks, weathering, and the specimen’s preservation. Fractured bone can complicate the reading of margins and surface texture; badly fractured specimens merit particular caution.
Excavation or preparation damage Fine surface morphology, position, cross-cutting relationships with other features, and assemblage context. Tools used during preparation can create marks that may be confused with ancient traces.

These explanations are compared using overlapping evidence, not a single deciding measurement. For example, the location of a feature may make it anatomically plausible as a natural opening, while its surface texture or relationship to another mark may point elsewhere. A conclusion is stronger when independent observations converge; if the evidence conflicts, a careful description of the ambiguity is more defensible than forcing a label.

Preparation damage is a real interpretive issue, not a theoretical footnote. A 2019 study in Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports examined air-scribe marks using fine morphology alongside their cross-cutting relationships with other surface features, position, and assemblage context. The practical lesson is that a feature’s relationship to the specimen and its other traces can help establish how it formed.

  1. Describe and document the feature. Record where it lies on the bone, its visible shape, and its relationship to fractures, neighboring marks, and other surface changes. Photograph it with a scale and from views that show its outline and depth.
  2. Measure its dimensions. Record length and width, and describe depth and margin form where these can be assessed. Digital calipers have been used in a fossil-bone survey to measure mark lengths; that is a way to document dimensions, not to diagnose a bite.
  3. Inspect the surface closely. Visual examination at suitable magnification can reveal edge form, texture, striations, crushing, or details that are hard to see unaided. Microscopy may also help distinguish a suspected biological trace from preparation damage.
  4. Compare alternative explanations. Ask whether the feature fits normal anatomy, pathology, healing, fracture, weathering, or preparation. Consider where it sits on the bone and how it intersects or relates to other surface features.
  5. Use context to test the interpretation. Consider the preservation and morphology of the bone, the distribution of marks, and the broader assemblage. Similar traces on associated specimens can add useful comparative evidence, but similarity alone does not establish a maker.
  6. State the conclusion at the strength the evidence supports. Separate what is directly observed—such as a puncture with particular dimensions and texture—from the interpretation that it is a tooth trace. If alternatives remain plausible, say so rather than presenting the most vivid explanation as certain.

For researchers, high-resolution three-dimensional surface measurement can make comparisons more quantitative and repeatable. A 2017 Journal of Human Evolution methods study proposed a systematic 3-D approach and reported correspondence with an experienced analyst’s macroscopic identifications on its fossil sample. That result supports 3-D measurement as a useful analytical method; it does not show that a scan by itself can identify every mark or its maker.

What the marks can reveal about feeding

A well-supported tooth trace documents an animal-to-bone interaction. The pattern and location of marks, evidence of crushing, striations, and the wider assemblage can help researchers interpret feeding or scavenging. The evidence becomes more informative when multiple observations fit together rather than when a single mark is asked to carry the entire behavioral claim.

But a bite trace does not, by itself, show that the trace maker killed the animal. The mark establishes contact with bone; whether that contact happened during an attack, feeding after death, or another interaction is a further inference. The 2020 Jurassic theropod study discusses feeding, scavenging, and possible cannibalism as interpretations built from assemblage evidence. Such behaviors should therefore be described as interpretations supported by the broader evidence, not as automatic consequences of finding a bite mark.

Healing can provide another part of the story. Bone remodeling may indicate that an injury occurred while the animal was alive and survived long enough for a response. Yet healing can also alter or obscure a trace, making its original form harder to recognize. Researchers must assess both what the bone’s response may imply and how that response affects identification of the mark itself.

Why naming the animal that bit the bone is harder

Identifying a likely tooth trace and identifying its maker are different levels of inference. Researchers may compare trace form with known tooth morphology, including serration or denticle patterns and spacing. But tooth marks vary with the way teeth contacted and were used on the bone, and preservation may remove or distort the very details needed for comparison.

A 2010 Palaeontology study of mammalian tooth traces on dinosaur and other Late Cretaceous vertebrate bones explicitly cautioned that one taxon can produce a range of mark forms. It avoided definitive taxonomic assignments when the evidence was insufficient. That is why careful descriptions often use phrases such as “consistent with” or “likely made by” rather than naming a species as a certainty.

Attribution is most credible when the mark’s geometry and texture fit a plausible tooth form, the spacing and pattern fit the proposed maker, and the bone and assemblage context do not point to a better alternative. Even then, the conclusion may be limited to a broader group rather than a species. If preservation is poor or several animals could have made similar traces, the responsible result may be “tooth trace, maker uncertain.”

How to read a reported bite-mark claim

When a paper, exhibit, or news report says a fossil has bite marks, check what level of claim is actually being made. “A groove interpreted as a tooth trace” is narrower than “a named predator attacked this animal.” The first concerns the origin of a surface feature; the second adds taxonomic and behavioral conclusions that need separate support.

  • Look for a description of several properties, not just a statement that the feature resembles a tooth mark.
  • Check whether authors considered normal anatomy, pathology, fractures, weathering, and excavation or preparation damage.
  • Notice whether the bone is intact enough for its margins and texture to be interpreted confidently.
  • Separate evidence for a tooth trace from evidence about the maker, feeding behavior, or whether the animal was killed.
  • Pay attention to confidence language. “Consistent with” or “likely” can be more accurate than a definite species-level label.

These distinctions do not make a bite-mark interpretation uninformative. They show exactly what the fossil can establish and where additional inference begins. Fossil traces are evidence interpreted from preserved surfaces, and the quality of the explanation depends on how carefully competing causes and contextual clues are evaluated.
