Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhen a wide receiver’s playing time changes, evaluate his routes and target opportunities—not just his snap count or last fantasy score. A falling snap share matters most when it also reduces routes and targets; stable target earning on fewer routes can point to a different outlook. Check the role, its cause and whether the change lasts before adjusting your lineup or roster.
Start by confirming the playing-time change
Compare the receiver’s offensive snaps and snap share with his own recent baseline. Snap share is the player’s offensive snaps divided by the team’s offensive snaps. Raw snap totals can drop because the team ran fewer plays, so check team plays and dropbacks as well as the player’s share.

A single game is a weak basis for a new projection. An in-game injury, unusual formations or a lopsided score can distort a player’s workload. Look at several recent games and note what was happening in each one. The NFL Analytics usage explainer cautions that roles can change quickly and one game may be shaped by blowout conditions.

Check routes to see whether snaps create passing opportunities
A receiver can be on the field to block or serve as a decoy without running a route. Route participation—routes run divided by team dropbacks—helps show how often he is available as a passing option. Compare it with snap share: a high snap count paired with falling route participation may overstate his receiving opportunity.

Also check targets per route run, calculated as targets divided by routes run. This shows how often the receiver earns a target when he runs a route. A player whose routes fall but whose target earning remains steady may still be effective when deployed; falling routes and weak target earning together point to a more substantial opportunity problem. PFF’s September 28, 2026 Fantasy Football Usage & Production Report tracks snaps, routes, targets per route run and related usage categories.
Measure how much of the passing game belongs to him
Target share is the receiver’s targets divided by team targets. Read it alongside route participation and targets per route run rather than in isolation. If the receiver’s target share and routes both decline, his access to the passing game is shrinking. If target earning per route remains healthy while his routes dip, the issue may be deployment rather than an inability to draw targets.

These measures describe opportunity, not talent by themselves. Quarterback play, coverage and sample size can affect production, so use the numbers to understand a role rather than treating them as a standalone forecast.

Use efficiency and deployment as context
Separate volume—the number of chances a player gets—from efficiency—what he produces with those chances. Yards per route run, receiving yards divided by routes run, provides per-route context. It does not replace route volume: a strong efficiency figure on a small number of routes may not yield dependable fantasy volume.

Route mix can help explain both targets and production. NFL Next Gen Stats classifies wide receiver routes as screen, flat, slant, crossing, out, in, hitch, corner, post and go. Its article reports historical league averages for wideouts during the 2018–19 seasons: go routes were 22.3% of routes and had a 10.8% target rate, while screens were 3.4% of routes and had a 40.7% target rate. Post routes averaged +0.48 EPA per target and corner routes +0.43. These are historical league figures, not current 2026 rates or player-specific projections. EPA per target measures expected points added relative to down, distance and field position at the start and end of a play. See the Next Gen Stats route analysis for its route categories and methodology.
When available, inspect red-zone targets, target depth and alignment too. A role can change in quality as well as quantity: a receiver may run fewer routes but retain valuable usage, or stay on the field while doing less work that creates fantasy opportunities. PFF’s usage report includes these categories alongside situational splits.

Find out why the role changed, then decide what to do
Check for injuries, returning teammates, trades, coaching or scheme changes, personnel packages and game script. A new rotation may reflect a durable shift, or a one-week response to the available roster or matchup. Give repeated changes across games more weight than a single outlier, but update quickly when team personnel or deployment changes.

Finally, translate the role into your league’s scoring and roster decision. Stable routes and target access despite weak recent fantasy scoring can support patience. A sharp, sustained reduction in routes and targets can lower future opportunity even after a productive fantasy week. The right action depends on format, scoring, roster depth and replacement options; the usage measures identify the change, but cannot decide those trade-offs for you.
