A college football spring game is usually a team scrimmage or practice staged for public viewing, not a regular-season game against an outside opponent. It can show which players are getting chances, how well units execute basic assignments, and what situations coaches are emphasizing—but it is only a limited snapshot, not a reliable depth chart or season forecast.
What is a college football exhibition game?
“Spring game” is the familiar name for a public spring event, but teams may describe it as a scrimmage or use their own event name. In most cases, players from the same team compete in a controlled practice setting. That differs from a contest against outside competition: the staff can shape the format, manage contact, rotate players, and choose what to show.

Not every scrimmage is open to spectators, and public events need not resemble a conventional game in every respect. A proposed NCAA legislative definition describes a scrimmage as practice devoted primarily—more than 50% of practice time—to 11-on-11, full-contact tackling to the ground. That is proposal language, not a universal description of every team’s spring game or necessarily a current rule. See the NCAA legislative proposal record.

As of October 4, 2026, NCAA proposals to change out-of-season football activities were not yet effective policy. The NCAA reported that its Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) Oversight Committee adopted a proposal on August 28, 2026, allowing two out-of-season practice periods with 21 on-field practices total. The periods together could last no more than seven weeks, and neither period could exceed five weeks. The Division I Cabinet was due to consider approval at its October 6–7 meeting; check the NCAA’s FBS proposal announcement for the outcome before treating the model as current policy.

The Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Oversight Committee reported a corresponding proposal on September 1, 2026: two practice periods, 21 on-field practices in total, no more than seven weeks combined, and no period longer than five weeks. It too was subject to Cabinet approval. The NCAA described it separately in its FCS proposal announcement; do not assume the status or wording of one subdivision’s proposal establishes the other’s policy.
These are practice-calendar proposals, not rules for how a game is played. The NCAA’s football rules page covers playing rules, rulebooks, and casebooks; it is not a spring-practice calendar summary.

What you can learn from watching
Who is getting meaningful opportunities
Notice which players take repetitions with prominent units and whether newcomers are involved in featured roles. That indicates opportunity and may suggest an active competition, but a spring appearance does not establish who will start. Coaches may be evaluating players, limiting exposure, or distributing work for reasons that are not visible from the stands.
How cleanly the team executes
Watch whether the offense lines up correctly, communicates, and carries out assignments. On defense, look for coordinated run fits and sound tackling within the event’s contact rules. Those details can reveal what the players have absorbed and where execution breaks down in that setting. They do not show how the same units will perform against a prepared opponent.

Whether a position group has credible alternatives
When first-unit players rotate out, notice whether the next players can maintain organization and execute their assignments. That can offer a clue about depth. But limited participation, controlled substitutions, and uneven opportunities can make a group appear stronger or thinner than it really is.
Which situations the coaches emphasize
Red-zone plays, third downs, and other situational work can show what the staff chose to rehearse. How players respond offers a glimpse of preparation and communication. The format is also a coaching choice: a staff may prioritize teaching, protect players, or control which information outsiders can observe.

What a spring game cannot settle
- The final depth chart: Repetitions show who took part that day, not necessarily the staff’s eventual lineup.
- Health and availability: An absence or limited workload alone does not explain a player’s status.
- Opponent-adjusted ability: A controlled scrimmage lacks the same test as playing an outside opponent with a game plan.
- Fall performance: One event cannot establish how spring execution will carry into the regular season.

How to compare two teams’ spring events
A public spring game and a closed or tightly controlled scrimmage are not equivalent viewing opportunities. Before comparing what two events appear to reveal, consider:
- How much contact was allowed and what the tackling rules were.
- Whether likely starters and backups participated.
- How the event was structured and how many live repetitions observers could see.
- Which situations received attention.
- How much personnel information each coaching staff chose to disclose.
Without those details, differences in what spectators observe may reflect event design as much as differences in team quality.
