Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA running back returning to practice is an availability clue, not proof he will play or regain his previous workload. Check the participation trend and final injury status to judge whether he is likely to be active; then evaluate his role and expected opportunities separately. A full practice can raise confidence, but it does not guarantee the same snaps, carries, targets or goal-line work he had before the injury.
What a practice designation tells you
The NFL’s injury-reporting policy distinguishes how much of a player’s normal practice work he completed: Did Not Participate (DNP), Limited Participation (LP), or Full Participation (FP). LP means fewer than 100% of normal repetitions; FP means 100%. Those labels describe practice participation, not a forecast of game snaps or fantasy touches. NFL injury-reporting policy

“Back at practice” can mean limited work, a non-contact session, or participation away from the full team practice. Use the official designation and any team explanation rather than treating an informal update as a clearance or workload report.

Moving from DNP to LP to FP is generally a more encouraging availability signal than one early-week session, but team schedules differ depending on the game day and circumstances. The sequence still cannot establish that the player will be cleared or receive his old role.

Estimate availability from the final report
To answer “Will he play?”, check the final practice report and the team’s game designation near lineup lock. Footballguys says its review of team reports from 2017 through 2023 found final participation to be the most predictive practice report for whether a player suits up. Its detailed probability table is gated, so there is no substantiated percentage to apply here. Footballguys practice-participation analysis

Assess his role if he is active
Being active answers only whether the player is available to play. He could be eased in, share the backfield, or lose passing-down or goal-line work. Compare the role he had before the injury with the most recent evidence about the current backfield.
- Was he the lead back before the injury, or already part of a committee?
- Did a teammate take on a meaningful role while he was out?
- What evidence is there about passing-down snaps, two-minute work, targets, routes and goal-line carries?
- Has the team or coach reported a workload cap, limited package or plan to ease him back in?
- Do current snap share, carry share, targets and red-zone opportunities support the old role?
Use current player-specific information for those checks; practice participation alone cannot be converted into a reliable snap or touch projection. RotoWire’s coverage includes practice reports, depth charts, stats and projections, but the relevant evidence is the current information for the player and his team.

Put injury history in perspective
A 2025 retrospective study of NFL time-loss injuries across the 2017–2018 through 2021–2022 seasons examined 2,523 musculoskeletal injuries, including 578 running back injuries. It reported that running backs averaged 0.7 fewer fantasy points per game in the season following a time-loss injury. That is a season-level comparison, not a forecast for a particular back’s first game after an injury; the authors also note that team factors affect outcomes and fantasy points do not precisely measure injury severity. 2025 NFL time-loss injury study
A separate PFF retrospective published in February 2026 examined ten running backs after serious injuries and found varied outcomes. With a small, selected group, it illustrates that recovery results differ rather than establishing a standard recovery curve. PFF retrospective on running backs after serious injuries

Neither broad result settles an individual start-or-sit decision. Give more weight to current player-specific status and role evidence; if the workload is unknown, reflect that uncertainty with a wider range or lower confidence instead of inventing a precise projection.
Handle concussion returns differently
A concussion has a specific NFL Return-to-Participation Protocol. The player advances through stages only after tolerating each without a recurrence of symptoms. Non-contact football work is not the same stage as full football activity and contact clearance. The club physician makes the return decision, which must be confirmed by an Independent Neurological Consultant. A practice appearance alone does not establish medical clearance. The NFL states, “There is no set timeline for return to play or progression through the protocol.” NFL Return-to-Participation Protocol

Compare him with your alternatives
Use the same evidence categories for the returning back and any available lineup alternative. The table is a decision framework, not a formula for predicting workload.
Quick Recap
| Factor | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | Day-by-day participation and final game status | Helps assess whether he is expected to suit up; it does not predict touches. |
| Workload | Snap share, carry share, routes, targets and any reported limits | Indicates how much opportunity may be available if active. |
| Role quality | Passing-down, goal-line and two-minute usage; current backfield competition | Receiving and scoring opportunities affect fantasy value, and touches are not interchangeable. |
| Recovery context | Injury type, time missed, return stage and team updates | Helps calibrate confidence without treating population averages as an individual prognosis. |
| Lineup decision | Scoring format, alternatives, matchup and roster needs | Determines whether the possible range of outcomes is acceptable for your lineup. |
A quick decision sequence
- Confirm the official designation. Check the team or NFL practice report and note whether the player is DNP, LP or FP.
- Follow the progression. Compare participation across the week and check the final report and game status near lineup lock.
- Check the backfield role. Look for current evidence about competition, snaps, carries, receiving work, goal-line usage and any reported workload limit.
- Account for your alternatives. Weigh the uncertain workload against the scoring format and other options rather than deciding from the practice label alone.
- For a concussion, rely on the official clearance process. Do not infer clearance from a practice appearance.
