Guitar Hero-style games use a chart: timed gameplay instructions linked to the song’s audio. In the familiar five-fret format, colored notes travel down lanes that match the controller’s fret buttons; you press the required button or buttons and strum as the notes cross the strike line. The chart is designed to make a song playable through the game controller—not to show every recorded pitch or provide guitar tablature.
What the notes on screen represent
The audio track is what you hear. A separate instrument chart tells the game when to ask for player inputs. Its notes appear as gems on a perspective “highway,” which is a visual timing aid: the gems approach a strike line, and the game checks whether your input falls within a timing tolerance called the hit window.

The chart is an authored, controller-facing interpretation of the music. Music scholar Kiri Miller described the distinction this way in a 2014 Cambridge University Press discussion of Guitar Hero and Rock Band notation: “the transcription is telling you how to play it on the guitar controller, and not how to play it on the electric guitar.” Chart authors can simplify or reshape musical material to make it playable at a particular difficulty. A chart is therefore not necessarily a note-for-note transcription of the full recording.
How a song becomes chart data
In documented Clone Hero chart folders, the audio file and chart data are separate. The file notes.mid can contain a tempo map, instrument tracks, note events, and other chart information. It uses a multi-track MIDI format with ticks-per-quarter resolution. MIDI Note On and Note Off events can indicate when an event starts and ends, and carry a key number and velocity; the rhythm-game format gives tracks and events their game-specific meaning.

That means a colored gem is not simply a standard guitar pitch rendered on screen. The game interprets chart events as instructions for a particular instrument, difficulty, and input layout. The chart’s timing is set in relation to the song, while the game schedules the gems to travel toward the strike line at a visible speed.
How five-fret notes match the controller
In the conventional five-fret layout, the lanes are green, red, yellow, blue, and orange, matching the five colored fret buttons. When a note reaches the strike line, hold its corresponding fret button and strum. For a chord, press the indicated fret buttons together and strum once as the chord reaches the hit window. Strumming when no note requires it can break your combo.

Exact visual conventions and rules can differ by game and chart format, so a symbol’s behavior should be checked against the specific title’s manual or chart documentation.
Five-fret and six-fret layouts are different
Most Guitar Hero-style controller advice assumes the familiar five colored fret buttons. Guitar Hero: Live introduced a six-fret layout with three lanes and two button positions per lane. Its physical button arrangement is not the same as a conventional five-fret guitar controller, so confirm which layout a game, chart, and instrument support before troubleshooting controls or choosing a controller.

Do you need a guitar controller?
No. In Clone Hero, keyboard and traditional gamepad inputs are alternatives to a compatible guitar or drums. A guitar-style controller does make the standard five-fret actions direct: fret buttons correspond to the lanes, and the strum bar supplies the strum input.
For a controller purchase, check the exact model and intended setup rather than relying on a broad label such as “Guitar Hero guitar.” Verify these points first:

- Layout: Is it a five-fret or six-fret instrument, and does that match the game and chart?
- Platform and game: Is the exact controller model supported by the console generation, game, or computer operating system you plan to use?
- Connection: Is it wired or wireless? If wireless, does it require a particular receiver or adapter?
- Condition and value: Is the instrument new, used, refurbished, or third-party? A community controller guide warns that some used listings can be overpriced and some third-party instruments may be low quality.
A Clone Hero controller guide described the guitar-styled PDP Riffmaster as the only high-quality guitar controller available new when that guide was updated; that is a time-sensitive community observation, not a guarantee of current stock or universal compatibility. The same guide notes that classic instruments are generally found second-hand. Check the guide and the requirements for your particular game and platform before buying.

Clone Hero is a documented example, not a stand-in for every Guitar Hero release. Available chart-format documentation covers a Harmonix/Rock Band MIDI lineage, community extensions, and some older Guitar Hero 1 and 2 differences; it does not establish one identical file format or controller mapping across the entire franchise. Treat compatibility and chart behavior as title-specific, and consult a manual or compatibility reference for the exact release and platform.
