A connection can reveal public wallet information, while a signature, token approval or transaction can authorize actions with funds. If you cannot tell what a prompt permits, stop.
First, make sure you have the right app
“PayFi” does not identify one product or business model. An app may be a wallet-connected payment dapp, an escrow interface, an infrastructure or routing network, or a combination. Before you connect, work out which entities provide each part of the service and which contract, if any, your wallet is being asked to interact with.

For example, Paycifi’s public materials describe USDC and EURC payments, programmable escrow, settlement on Base, a non-custodial wallet using Circle MPC, and third-party wallet, compliance and fiat-ramp providers. Those are company representations, not independent confirmation of how a particular deployment operates. Paycifi also says its regulatory analysis is not a legal opinion.
PayF describes a different model: a stablecoin-commerce routing network connecting issuers, wallets, card programs, payment institutions, software systems and merchants. Its site says it does not custody funds, issue stablecoins or operate payment licenses. Its issuer information describes eligibility expectations such as licensing, reserve attestations, operating policies and sanctions/AML controls. These descriptions help identify questions to ask; they do not independently establish a particular integration’s status.

Verify the domain and operator
Reach the site through a trusted channel
Start from a known official channel, inspect the full domain carefully and bookmark the genuine site for future visits. Look-alike pages can imitate real wallet and dapp interfaces. Ethereum.org’s scam guidance recommends verifying the URL before connecting. Never enter your wallet recovery phrase into a website.
Identify the responsible entities
Find the legal entity operating the app and determine what it actually does: controls software, holds or routes funds, provides a wallet, arranges fiat conversion, handles settlement, or supplies another service. Then identify relevant counterparties, such as the stablecoin issuer, wallet provider, ramp, card program or settlement provider. A brand name or “non-custodial” label is not a substitute for understanding who controls keys, funds and recovery paths.
If the app makes claims about licensing, compliance, audits or custody, look for documentation that identifies the relevant entity, jurisdiction, product and scope. A provider’s own description is a claim to verify, not independent proof of legal status or security.

Know what a wallet connection does—and does not do
A dapp connection commonly lets the site see your public wallet address and related public activity, and lets it propose wallet prompts. Connecting alone does not give the site permission to transfer funds. You still decide whether to sign a message, approve a token allowance or submit a transaction. These later actions have different consequences. A message signature may authorize an action even when no network fee is shown. A token approval can let a spender contract use the approved token; an unlimited allowance may expose your entire balance of that token to that spender. A submitted blockchain transaction, once accepted, generally cannot be reversed by the user. Uniswap Labs’ signature-scam guidance explains why signing should not be treated as harmless merely because it does not display a gas fee.
Inspect every signature, approval and transaction
Before confirming, compare the wallet prompt with the action the app said it would perform. Check the network, action, contract or spender address, token, amount or allowance, and the message being signed. A request that is unreadable, unrelated to the task or inconsistent with the app’s explanation is a reason to stop. If the wallet cannot show a message clearly, or the app cannot explain why the signature is needed, do not sign.

A wallet warning should prompt investigation. The absence of a warning does not prove an app or request is safe. MetaMask describes its security alerts and trust signals as informational rather than guarantees; a missing verified signal alone also does not prove a site is malicious.

For token approvals, confirm that the spender is the contract you intended to use and that the requested allowance is appropriate for the action. Be especially cautious when a prompt requests unlimited access or an approval that the app did not explain. If you are considering more than one app, use the same questions for each. Ask for concrete documentation—such as contract addresses, audit scope and date, fee terms or custody arrangements—rather than relying on trust badges, claimed total value locked, an audit logo or a “non-custodial” label.

For any app-specific judgment, check current documentation: domains, contracts, counterparties, product features, audits, fees and legal status can change. The available examples do not establish the risk, licensing or suitability of an unnamed app or of every service using the PayFi label.
Review permissions after using the app
Check both your wallet’s connected-site list and its active token allowances. Disconnecting a site and revoking an on-chain allowance are separate actions: disconnecting alone does not remove an allowance. Revoke permissions you no longer need using a trusted wallet interface or explorer tool. Ethereum.org’s scam guidance and MetaMask’s dapp guide cover these distinct checks.
A separate or hardware wallet can limit which wallet you expose to a dapp, but it does not verify the app or make an unclear signature safe. Prompt review remains necessary.
