A game subscription is worth considering when the games and benefits you will actually use during a defined period are worth more to you than that period’s full cost. Estimate it by checking the games you want, whether they work on your device and in your region, how much time you have to play, what you would otherwise pay, and what happens to access when you cancel.
Start with a specific plan and time period
Choose the service tier and a period that matches its billing option—such as one month or one year. Include the amount you will actually pay at checkout, including applicable taxes or platform-specific billing, and use the renewal price rather than assuming an introductory offer will continue.

Write down a short list for the month or year you are evaluating. Do not count a title just because it appears in a large catalog: check whether it is currently included in the specific tier, available in your region, and playable on your device. Confirm the edition too, especially if you care about particular downloadable content or other included extras. Catalogs and offers change, so recheck the official catalog before subscribing.

Estimate how many of those games you can realistically finish or meaningfully play in the period. If you have only a few hours a week, a huge library may not add much value. A smaller selection that fits your available time and interests may be the better match.
Compare the subscription with what you would otherwise spend
For each game on your list, ask whether you would actually buy it—or otherwise pay to access it—if it were not included. Add the current cost of only those games. Do not count the full retail price of every catalog game as money saved: an unplayed title you would never have bought creates no avoided purchase cost.

Estimated subscription value = avoided purchase cost for games you would truly buy + value of extra benefits you would truly use − subscription cost.

The result is only as useful as your assumptions. Use current game prices and your likely play list, rather than the catalog’s total size or hypothetical savings.
Give extra benefits value only if you will use them
Depending on your platform and habits, a plan may add online multiplayer, cloud saves, classic-game libraries, downloadable content, trials, discounts, or streaming. Consider which of these you would use during the chosen period and what that access is worth to you. Assign no value to features you do not need.

Plans within the same service can differ substantially. PlayStation Plus Essential emphasizes monthly games and multiplayer, while Extra adds a Game Catalog; Sony describes that catalog as featuring hundreds of games and says PS4 games will be added only intermittently from January 2026. Nintendo Switch Online combines online features with classic-game libraries, while Expansion Pack adds selected catalogs and downloadable content; some features depend on a compatible game or system. Ubisoft+ Premium’s U.S. checkout listed 145+ PC games, day-one releases and early access when available, while noting that some premium editions may not include all premium content. A subscription usually provides access for a limited period, not ownership of every included game. Read the terms for the specific service, plan, and region before you sign up. In particular, check when renewal occurs, how to cancel, when access ends, and whether progress is treated separately from game access.

Because access can end after cancellation, include only the time you expect to use a game while subscribed. If you want to keep playing a particular title later, check whether you would need to buy it separately and whether your progress will remain available.
Compare viable services on the same terms
If more than one service works on your device, compare each against the same play list and time period. Verify specific titles before comparing catalog size; then check compatibility, total cost, renewal terms, usable benefits, and access after cancellation.

Use a short commitment to test your estimate
When a service offers a shorter billing period that fits your plan, it can be a practical way to try a known set of games and reassess before renewing. Record the titles you intend to play and the features you expect to use, then review your actual use before the next charge. Do not assume canceling immediately ends access: Ubisoft says cancellation takes effect at the end of the billing cycle, and EA says canceled members retain features through the membership period. Follow the service’s own cancellation steps and renewal rules for your account.
