Before buying a boat with connected electronics, make the seller demonstrate every important feature underway, verify that the exact devices are compatible, and have an independent marine surveyor inspect the installation. A screen that powers on is not proof that its sensors, network, radio, or app-dependent functions work.
Start with an inventory of what is included
Ask the seller to identify each display, chartplotter, instrument, radio, AIS unit, sensor, network component, app, and remote feature included in the sale. Record the brand, exact model, serial number, approximate age, and available manuals. Ask which charts, subscriptions, accessories, or promised transfers are part of the deal; verify what actually transfers rather than assuming an account or service follows the boat.

Discover Boating recommends listing included electronics and their serial numbers in the purchase agreement. Discover Boating’s used-boat buying guide also recommends checking systems and taking a sea trial.
Require a live demonstration, including underway
Have the seller start the equipment and demonstrate the functions you expect to use. Check the chartplotter, instruments, lights, audio, communications, and each advertised connected feature. Ask for a sufficiently long sea trial: Discover Boating notes that a longer ride can warm the engine and help verify systems, while BoatUS includes electronics and instrumentation among the items to check on a sea trial.

Test the system in the conditions in which you plan to use it. Confirm that navigation data and instrument readings appear where expected, and ask which features continue to work without a phone signal, marina Wi-Fi, or an active subscription. Cloud-, cellular-, satellite-, and app-dependent functions vary by product and installation; there is no universal test that proves them all. For a feature material to your decision, consult the exact manual and ask a marine-electronics technician to verify it.
Verify that connected devices actually work together
Ask the seller which devices exchange data, then have them show that data on each relevant display. A shared brand or a connector that fits does not establish compatibility. Check the exact model numbers against the manufacturers’ compatibility information, including system requirements and specified cables.

Marine multifunction displays depend on connected equipment, network configuration, and installation details. BoatUS warns that ordinary home or office cables may not have waterproofed connectors or marine IP ratings; use the manufacturer-specified marine cables and parts as instructed. See BoatUS’s guidance on adding a second station for why exact requirements and marine-rated cabling matter.

Ask the surveyor to examine accessible batteries and wiring, noting corrosion, loose connections, visible damage, or undocumented modifications. Where the surveyor or technician considers it appropriate, observe whether the equipment remains stable while the engine and other electrical loads are operating. BoatUS includes battery and wiring checks in its boat evaluation checklist and its discussion of the boat survey.

For VHF and AIS, identify the fitted equipment and ask the seller to demonstrate radio transmission and reception and AIS operation. Ask about outages or interference, and have a qualified marine-electronics technician assess antenna placement or suspected interference on the actual vessel. AIS reception can be affected by nearby antennas and electronic equipment, so a powered display alone does not establish that the installation is performing properly. BoatUS explains relevant considerations in its AIS overview and installation guidance.
BoatUS describes VHF as a basic means of communicating directly with other boats or marine rescue organizations. A handheld VHF can be a useful backup, but it does not prove the installed radio works or establish that the boat has equipment appropriate to its use and local requirements. See its basic boat equipment guidance.

- Easy-to-use 9” chartplotter with a bright, sunlight-readable touchscreen display with improved detail, clarity and viewing angle
- Included GT56-TM transducer for Garmin traditional, ClearVü and SideVü scanning sonars
- Built-in Garmin Navionics+ coastal charts with integrated Navionics data
- Built-in Wi-Fi connectivity lets you wirelessly share sonar, waypoints and routes with another ECHOMAP UHD2 chartplotter
- Wirelessly connects to your Force trolling motor to create and follow routes, navigate to waypoints, control speed, check battery life and more
Ask about software, programming, and service dependencies
Ask when the chartplotter software was last updated and whether the seller can show update records. Confirm that the VHF’s MMSI programming is correct for the vessel and ask whether any connected functions require a subscription or account. BoatUS’s spring commissioning guidance recommends chartplotter software updates and checking VHF operation and MMSI programming.

Use an independent survey and specialist checks
A buyer checklist is a preliminary screen, not a substitute for an independent marine survey. Arrange the survey after an accepted offer, allow time to review the report, and make systems accessible for inspection. Ask specifically for practical checks of batteries, wiring, electronics, and appliances. A surveyor works for the buyer and can document condition, but is not a repair technician; record faults and obtain repair estimates from qualified professionals instead of treating an observation as a diagnosis.

For a powerboat, consider a separate mechanical survey by someone trained on the specific engine type. BoatUS discusses the survey’s scope and the distinction between surveying and repair in its survey guide, and its evaluation checklist cautions that a checklist does not replace a competent surveyor or engine mechanic.
Put the equipment and promises in writing
List the included electronics and serial numbers in the signed purchase agreement. Record any promised repairs, transfers, charts, subscriptions, or accessories there as well. This gives both parties a clear record of what was represented as part of the sale.
Compare boats by verified capability, not screen count
When comparing boats, focus on whether the features you need worked in the demonstration, whether devices are compatible and have a workable upgrade path, and what the condition and documentation show. Also establish which functions depend on connectivity or recurring services, and ask a qualified professional to assess repair or replacement needs. Those last costs and dependencies are boat- and product-specific; do not assume they can be inferred from appearance or brand.
