Can AI Prove Theorems? What Automated Proof Systems Can—and Can’t—Do

AI systems can prove specific formalized theorems, but a checked proof is not the same as autonomous understanding of arbitrary mathematics. Here’s what theorem provers verify and where their limits lie.

Yes—AI systems can prove particular theorems when they can express the statement in a formal system and produce a proof that the system’s checker accepts. That establishes the encoded claim from the system’s definitions and axioms. It does not, by itself, show that the encoding captures the intended problem or that the system can prove arbitrary mathematics without human guidance.

What does it mean for AI to prove a theorem?

A theorem is a statement that follows from specified assumptions and rules of inference. In an automated proof system, the claim and its proof are represented in a formal language precise enough for software to process.

Two jobs are involved: finding a proof and checking one. A search system may try tactics, transformations, or candidate proof steps. A proof assistant can help construct a proof object—a formal representation of the argument—and pass it to a checker. A natural-language explanation generated by AI is not equivalent to a machine-checked proof unless it is translated into a formal artifact and accepted by a suitable checker.

How a proof assistant checks a result

Lean is an interactive theorem prover based on dependent type theory. Its small kernel checks proof terms against the rules of its type theory. Tactics and automation can help generate those terms, but acceptance depends on the kernel’s check of the result. The Lean project’s language reference describes this architecture.

This division separates potentially complicated proof search from a smaller trusted checking core. Lean’s introduction to theorem proving distinguishes automated theorem proving, which emphasizes finding proofs, from interactive theorem proving, which emphasizes constructing and verifying proofs within a formal foundation. It describes providing a proof as the gold standard for supporting a mathematical claim.

A checker’s approval has a precise scope: the encoded proposition follows under the formal system’s rules, definitions, and axioms, assuming the checker and foundation are sound and appropriate. The checker does not determine whether someone translated the original question correctly, whether the chosen axioms match the intended mathematics, or whether every component outside the trusted core is reliable.

What AlphaProof and AlphaGeometry 2 achieved at IMO 2024

Google DeepMind reported that AlphaProof and AlphaGeometry 2 together scored 28 of 42 points at the 2024 International Mathematical Olympiad, a silver-medal-equivalent result. This is a result for that competition and system configuration, not a general theorem-proving pass rate. Google DeepMind’s announcement describes AlphaProof as a system trained to prove mathematical statements in Lean.

Google Research describes AlphaProof as an AlphaZero-inspired agent trained with reinforcement learning. It solved three of the five non-geometry problems, including the competition’s hardest problem, according to its publication summary.

The result also depended on a human step before proof search: the official IMO 2024 solution materials state that the English problem statements were formalized into Lean by hand. The agents generated and formalized answers from those inputs. Thus, the score is strong evidence that AI systems can solve difficult, bounded problems represented in a formal language; it is not evidence that they independently interpreted the original contest statements.

What these systems can and cannot establish

What a checked proof can establish

  • The formal proposition follows from the definitions and axioms used by the system, provided the trusted checker and foundation are sound.
  • The proof artifact can be checked independently within that formal environment, rather than accepted solely because an AI explanation sounds convincing.
  • On a benchmark such as IMO 2024, a verified result demonstrates capability on the particular formalized problems and conditions tested.

What it does not establish on its own

  • Correct interpretation: A valid proof of a mistranslated statement, or one missing an intended condition, does not solve the original problem. Formalization is part of the work.
  • General mathematical autonomy: A competition result does not demonstrate that a system can prove arbitrary conjectures or work across all areas of mathematics.
  • Independent research contribution: The cited results do not establish that these systems independently produce new, broadly useful research mathematics.
  • Infallibility: Proof checking is only as sound as the rules, axioms, implementation, and components inside the trust boundary.

How to compare automated proof systems

“AI theorem prover” can refer to tools with different goals, inputs, and standards of verification. A meaningful comparison asks what the system handles and what a successful result actually guarantees.

Question Why it matters
What can it represent? Its formal language, logic, and domain determine which claims it can express.
How does it work? It may search automatically, guide an interactive proof, or combine both approaches.
What does it output? A machine-checkable proof object supports a different level of verification than a natural-language explanation alone.
What must be trusted? Identify the checker or kernel, axioms, solver, and any external components involved.
How much human input is needed? People may formalize the statement, suggest lemmas, configure tactics, or interpret the result.
What was actually tested? Check the benchmark, input format, computational budget, and method used to judge correctness before comparing scores.
