Choose a container by the amount of coffee you normally store, then check the maker’s stated bean capacity. There is no dependable universal conversion from liters to grams: bean size and roast can affect how much fits. If you store a changing supply, use a resealable bag or keep bulk coffee separate from a smaller daily-use container instead of buying one oversized jar.
Start with the amount of coffee you store
- Check the bag weight. Use the quantity you actually keep on hand—not a guessed volume—as your starting point.
- Match it to a published capacity. Look for a manufacturer’s claim about how much coffee the specific container holds. A liter rating alone does not establish bean capacity.
- Account for roast and coffee form. Follow any maker caveat about roast-dependent fit, and check whether the container is approved for whole beans, grounds, or both.
- Consider how you use the supply. If you open the full amount each day, a suitably sized container may be convenient. If you keep a larger reserve, store that separately and transfer a smaller amount for daily use.
These steps are more reliable than applying a single grams-per-liter rule, which the available product specifications do not support.

Use manufacturer capacity examples, not a universal conversion

These are individual manufacturer specifications, not interchangeable measurements. For example, OXO’s 450 g claim applies to its named 1.6 L model; it does not mean every 1.6 L container fits that amount. Likewise, Fellow’s roast caveat is specific to its 1.2 L Atmos. Check the product listing for the model you are considering: OXO Steel Coffee POP and Fellow Atmos.

Choose based on whole beans, grounds, and daily use
For whole beans
Use the maker’s bean-capacity figure when one is available. If the amount you buy varies, a resealable original bag or two appropriately sized containers can be more practical than a large daily-use jar. Meleno recommends choosing a container close to the quantity of coffee; Bean & Burr offers similar sizing guidance. Neither establishes a universal volume conversion.

For ground coffee
Check the container’s intended use rather than assuming a bean canister also suits grounds. OXO says its 1.6 L model works for beans or grounds. Fellow advises using Atmos for whole beans only because fine grounds may clog its intake valve.
For bulk supplies
If you buy a larger quantity than you use at once, keep the reserve sealed and use a smaller container for the active portion. The Australian SITHFAB005 learning guide describes this bulk-and-daily-container approach. It avoids requiring the whole supply to be opened whenever you prepare coffee.

Decide whether a separate container is necessary
A specialty canister is optional if your coffee comes in a resealable, barrier-style bag that still closes properly. Meleno says such a bag can remain the everyday container. A separate container is useful when the bag no longer seals well, when you want a more convenient countertop setup, or when the container’s size better matches the quantity you use.

Place and maintain the container sensibly
- Keep coffee closed, dry, and away from heat and direct light. A cool, dry, dark cupboard is a straightforward storage location.
- If the canister will sit on an exposed counter, light shielding may matter; OXO says the tint on its Steel Coffee POP shields flavor from light.
- Follow the closure instructions for the particular model. OXO describes its press-button lid as airtight; Fellow says the manual Atmos lid must be twisted every 4–5 days to maintain its vacuum seal. These maker descriptions are not the result of a direct comparison test.
- Do not assume a container guarantees a fixed freshness period. Advice varies: PhilMech’s Technical Bulletin No. 9 says opened whole beans exposed to the environment should not be kept for more than a week. The Australian SITHFAB005 Learning Guide, Version 2020.1, suggests buying quantities lasting one to two weeks and says whole beans are ideally consumed within one month of roasting. These are source-specific recommendations, not a universal freshness guarantee.
