Forecast each feature’s monthly source volume, multiply it by the number of target locales, apply the chosen provider’s billing rules and current rates, then add any base fees and separately billed services.
Build the estimate from billable translation volume
For each kind of content, start with this calculation:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Monthly translated volume = average billable source characters per item × monthly items × target languages
Count each distinct translation event that the provider bills. If an item changes and is translated again, include that event when it is billable. Keep separate rows for interface strings, user-generated content, notifications, help content and bulk imports; their frequency and payload sizes can differ substantially.
Use low, expected and high monthly volumes for each row. An early launch month may not represent steady usage, so a range is more useful than treating initial traffic as a reliable average.
Then estimate spend with:
Estimated monthly API spend = usage charges after applicable allowance + subscription or base charges + model, document, image, training or hosting charges + other separately billed cloud services
This is a planning estimate, not a provider quote. Check whether an allowance applies to the specific method, is shared with other products, or offsets usage incrementally; also check for committed tiers.

What changes the billable amount
Every target locale can multiply the volume
Google says batch character volume is multiplied by the number of target languages, and Azure says each target-language translation counts separately. For example, translating a 100,000-character monthly source corpus into five target locales can mean 500,000 billed translations under those rules. Measure the payload, not visible words
Providers meter characters according to their own rules. Google counts code points, including whitespace and untranslated characters that are included in the request; it also counts an empty query as one character. Measure the exact payload sent to the API rather than estimating from word counts or what appears on screen. Google Cloud Translation pricing
Use the rate for the actual method and model
Text translation, custom models, LLM translation, adaptive translation and formatted documents can use different rates or units. Google’s LLM text pricing meters input and output characters separately, while formatted document translation can be page-priced. Do not apply a standard text rate to a different method or feature. Separate API charges from supporting services
Storage and other cloud resources used alongside translation may be billed separately. Include hosting, queues, storage, logging and data egress as distinct lines in a total-cost estimate rather than folding them into the translation rate. Google Cloud Translation pricing

Official pricing details to include in a forecast
The following figures and billing terms are from official provider pages accessed on October 4, 2026. Pricing can change, and applicable rates may depend on region, currency, offer and consumption model.
| Service or method | Published pricing detail | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Google Cloud Translation standard NMT text translation | First 500,000 characters per month are covered by a monthly credit up to $10, with no rollover; thereafter, the displayed USD tier lists $20 per million characters. | The credit is shared between Basic and Advanced and does not apply to formatted document translation. Check the current rate tier and consumption model. Google Cloud pricing |
| Google Cloud Translation LLM text translation | The listed USD rate is $10 per million input characters and $10 per million output characters. | Account for input and output separately and confirm the current method and rate. Google Cloud pricing |
| Azure AI Translator F0 | Two million characters per month free for a combination of standard translation and custom-translation training. | The pricing page accessed showed the F0 allowance, but displayed “$-” for the paid standard per-million amount. Use the Azure pricing calculator for the selected region and subscription rather than substituting an older or third-party figure. Azure pricing |
| DeepL API Pro | Monthly base price plus charges for characters in successful API requests. | The accessed usage page does not state a current per-character price. Confirm the rate and any applicable usage limits or cost controls for your plan. DeepL API usage |
Do not compare these figures as if they were interchangeable: they cover different billing structures, methods and allowances. Google’s price page also notes that applicable rates can vary by consumption model.

Quick Recap
A repeatable workflow for forecasting monthly spend
- Inventory translation events. List each feature, source language, target locale and monthly frequency.
- Measure actual payloads. Count characters in the exact data sent to the API, including markup and whitespace where the provider counts them.
- Expand by locale and repeat events. Multiply source volume for each target language and include changed content, retries and retranslation when they are billable.
- Choose the real method. Identify whether each row uses standard text, documents, images, a custom model or an LLM; check each method’s meter rather than borrowing a text rate.
- Calculate three scenarios. Apply the selected region’s current rates and allowances to low, expected and high usage. Add base fees and adjacent infrastructure as separate costs.
- Attribute production usage. Use provider labels or equivalent dimensions in usage reporting so you can see which feature drives consumption. Google documents request labels for granular billing reports. Google Cloud request labels
- Set controls and revise. Use budget alerts, quotas or provider usage controls where available, then update the forecast as real usage becomes measurable. Google documents quota management; quotas and billing controls are not necessarily the same thing. DeepL documents controls that limit requested monthly usage. Google Cloud quotas · DeepL API usage
