To stop Xbox Game Pass from renewing, sign in to Microsoft Services & subscriptions with the Microsoft account that bought it, open the subscription’s management options, and cancel or turn off recurring billing. Then check the subscription entry: if it offers “Turn on recurring billing” and shows an expiry date, Microsoft says renewal is already off.
Cancel Game Pass from your Microsoft account
- Go to account.microsoft.com/services and sign in with the Microsoft account used to purchase Game Pass. If you have more than one Microsoft account, check the one associated with the subscription.
- Find the Xbox Game Pass subscription and select Manage, then choose Cancel or the option to turn off recurring billing. Wording can vary. Follow the on-screen prompts through the confirmation step.
- Return to the subscription entry and check its status. If it now offers Turn on recurring billing rather than Manage, Microsoft says recurring billing is already off; the displayed expiry date is when the subscription is scheduled to end.
Microsoft also says cancellation or turning off recurring billing is available on an Xbox console. Use the subscription controls shown on your console, or use the account page above if you cannot find the controls. Microsoft’s Services Agreement says you must cancel before the next billing date to stop being charged for continued service.

What happens after you turn off renewal?
Turning off recurring billing normally stops the next automatic payment without ending prepaid access immediately. Microsoft’s cancellation guidance says subscription benefits continue until the subscription expires. The expiry date shown in your account is therefore important: you can generally keep using Game Pass until then, subject to the games remaining in the catalog.

Game Pass library access is not permanent ownership. Microsoft says access lasts only while the subscription has not expired or been cancelled, and an individual game can also leave the catalog. If the account offers an immediate cancellation tied to a refund, read that option carefully before confirming; accepting it may end access sooner than simply turning off renewal.

Renewal off versus immediate cancellation

Can you get a refund for Game Pass?
Microsoft’s Xbox guidance says the most recent recurring charge may be refundable if you cancel and request a refund within 30 days after that charge. This is a possible eligibility window, not a promise that every cancellation qualifies. Microsoft’s general subscription refund policy says eligibility depends on factors including timing, subscription type, and country, and that not all cancellations result in a refund. Follow the refund prompts in the Xbox account flow and check the local terms that apply to you.

If you cannot find the subscription
- Check other Microsoft accounts. Game Pass may be attached to a different email or account than the one currently signed in.
- Check where you bought it. If the subscription was purchased through the Apple App Store or Google Play, Microsoft says to contact that store to cancel or request a refund.
- Investigate an unfamiliar charge. For an unrecognized Microsoft charge, use Microsoft’s refund help and its Manage your payments route to review the transaction.
Deleting a payment card, uninstalling the Xbox app, or removing a game does not cancel the subscription; use the subscription management flow or the store where you purchased it.
