Connected Car Apps vs. Phone Navigation: Which Shares Less Data?

Phone navigation is not data-free, and connected-car services may collect vehicle-specific details too. The difference depends on the exact service, feature, and privacy setting.

There is no universal winner. Phone navigation can send a provider your location and route details; connected-car services can handle those same categories and, depending on the vehicle and features, vehicle status or driving data too. What shares less depends on the exact service and whether you mean less data transmitted, less data linked to your account, less data retained, or less data passed to another party.

What “shares less” means

A navigation provider receiving information is not the same as that information being tied to your name, retained indefinitely, or disclosed to another company. Privacy notices describe these separately, and the examples below do not establish a single cross-industry ranking.

“In-car navigation” can also mean different things: a phone app projected to the dashboard, Google Maps built into a compatible car, or an automaker’s connected service. Each can involve a different provider, policy, and set of controls.

What the named services say they collect

Service example Documented data categories Account, sharing, and controls
Automaker connected services: Toyota, covered U.S. vehicles and services Toyota’s notice lists vehicle location, vehicle status, driving data, and—on vehicles with user profiles—saved locations and map search and routing history. Toyota describes Vehicle Connectivity Consent and a Privacy Portal in its app. The notice says declining consent disables Connected Services and data transmission under the described conditions. Scope, vehicle, and service exclusions apply. Toyota Connected Services Privacy Notice
Phone navigation: Apple Maps Apple lists authorized device location, map areas viewed, searches and other interactions, and route-request details such as origin, current location, destination, and transport mode. Apple says many personalized features are generated on-device, but also documents data sent to Apple. Route Sharing with a vehicle through CarPlay is optional. Apple Maps & Privacy
Phone navigation: Google Maps Google lists GPS location, route details, and device sensor data during navigation. Some Maps activity, including direction searches, may be saved to a Google Account when relevant history settings are on. App location permission and account history controls address different data flows. Google Maps navigation data and Maps history settings
Navigation built into a compatible car: Google Maps Google lists GPS location, route taken, road descriptions, vehicle sensor status, and some connected-device sensor data. Shared EV data may include battery and vehicle information. Google describes a car-based Privacy center and related controls. Availability and functionality depend on manufacturer, region, and data plan. Google Maps built into your car

These are specific examples, not stand-ins for all phone apps or automakers. Toyota’s notice is a U.S. example, not a universal rule for connected vehicles.

How the data flows differ

Automaker connected services can cover more than navigation

Toyota’s U.S. Connected Services Privacy Notice, updated July 1, 2026, applies to specified U.S. territories and covered services; it notes geographic and other exclusions, including qualifications for rental vehicles. It lists VIN-linked vehicle information, location, and status such as doors, windows, odometer, oil life, fuel economy, trip distance, and distance to empty. Driving data can include acceleration, speed, travel direction, steering, braking, and sensor readings. On vehicles with user profiles, the notice also describes linked music preferences, saved locations, and map search and routing history. Toyota says interior-image data for the features it describes remains stored in the vehicle and is not transmitted to Toyota. These statements apply to the covered Toyota services and equipped vehicles, not other manufacturers.

Toyota says users can manage Vehicle Connectivity Consent and transmission preferences in the app’s Privacy Portal. Under the notice’s stated conditions, declining consent turns off vehicle data transmission and Connected Services. If a user takes no action, Toyota says it continues using non-precise location, driving, and vehicle-health data for internal research and analysis while Connected Services are unavailable. See the notice for its scope and conditions.

Phone navigation still sends location and route information

Apple’s Maps disclosure, dated September 14, 2026, lists request time, device and software details, language, authorized device location, visible map boundaries, and Maps interactions such as searches and places viewed. Navigation requests can include origin and current location, destination, transport mode—including CarPlay status—and a random session identifier. Apple says individual usage metrics use an identifier that rotates multiple times per hour and is not tied to an Apple Account. That account-linkage detail does not mean Maps sends no location or route data to Apple.

Apple says many personalized features use data generated on-device. If Preferred Routes and Predicted Destinations are enabled, route geometry is sent to Apple; Apple says it takes steps within 24 hours so it does not learn that submitted geometry was a preferred route or predicted destination. When CarPlay Route Sharing is enabled, Apple says route origin and current location, destination, and route line go to the vehicle for navigation and driver-assistance support. Apple says that information is not tied to the Apple Account, while the vehicle’s use is governed by its own privacy policy. The Apple disclosure names a setting to disable Route Sharing for a vehicle.

Google says its phone navigation collects GPS location, route details, and device sensor data during navigation for real-time functions such as routing and traffic. Turn-by-turn collection begins shortly after Start and stops after arrival or when navigation is stopped. Google says data used for map updates is not associated with the user’s Google Account or device, while other Maps activity may be account-associated. Its history help page says searches and directions may be saved to an account when Search Services History is on, and notes that relevant settings are being updated. Check current app and account controls rather than relying on a fixed menu path.

Built-in Google Maps is distinct from phone projection

Google’s in-car documentation concerns Maps built into a compatible vehicle, not every automaker service or a phone app projected onto a dashboard. Google lists GPS location, routes, road descriptions such as signs or lane markings, vehicle sensor status such as wiper state, and data from connected devices such as a phone barometer or compatible vehicle wheel speed. It says trip and sensor data used for map updates is not associated with a Google Account or vehicle, uses a securely generated identifier that resets regularly, and is deleted after processing. Separately, Google says shared EV data may be saved on its servers and used for range and charging features.

How to reduce the data you share

  1. Identify every service in use. Check whether the car uses an automaker companion service, embedded Google Maps, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, or several at once. A phone connection does not make their privacy policies identical.
  2. Review phone location permission. For the specific navigation app, check whether location access is limited to while the app is in use. Google says denying location disables real-time features such as turn-by-turn navigation, so weigh that trade-off before changing it.
  3. Separate live navigation from account history. Review Google Maps history and Timeline controls separately from location access for navigation. History settings concern account-associated activity; they do not by themselves describe every live navigation data flow.
  4. Check Apple Maps features individually. Review location access, Preferred Routes and Predicted Destinations, and CarPlay Route Sharing if you want to limit those particular flows.
  5. Review the car’s own controls. Check connected-service consent, location and trip sharing, driver profiles, and third-party app permissions. Menu names and consequences vary by model; consult its manual.
  6. Clear vehicle data when ownership changes. Before selling or sharing a car, remove profiles and reset stored information as directed for that vehicle. Ford’s U.S. privacy notice recommends a master/factory or connectivity reset when a vehicle changes hands because preferences and imported information may remain stored. Ford also notes that third-party services connected to its products are governed by those providers’ policies. See Ford’s U.S. Privacy Policy.

What the evidence can—and cannot—settle

The reviewed disclosures do not provide a common measurement of data volume that would show which option sends less overall. Nor does account unlinking alone establish that a service is more private: the provider may still receive information for stated functions, and collection, account association, retention, and onward sharing are distinct questions. Compare the policy and settings for the exact app, car, feature, and region you use.
