Estimate the energy your devices will use over the entire time between recharging opportunities, then compare that total with a power bank’s usable energy in watt-hours (Wh). Your trip length alone does not determine the battery size: navigation habits, camera use, tracking, messaging, device efficiency, and chances to recharge all matter. Plan a margin for charging losses, and keep navigation and lighting backups independent of your phone.
1. List the devices you will actually power
Include only electronics you expect to use or recharge on the trip. Depending on your setup, that might mean a phone, GPS, satellite messenger, watch, camera, or rechargeable headlamp. For each device, note its battery capacity and how you will use it.

Include the activities that draw power, not just the device name: offline navigation, GPS tracking, photos, messaging, screen time, and overnight operation can change the estimate. A device you will not charge or use electrically does not belong in the power budget.
2. Estimate the energy needed before you can recharge
Work out the expected use over the whole itinerary, or over the longest stretch between reliable recharging opportunities. Estimate how many full-equivalent charges each device will need, or estimate its operating energy in Wh if that information is available. Add the device estimates to get your trip load.

REI’s starting formula is device power needs × number of needed recharges = required power capacity. Its guide illustrates the arithmetic with an iPhone 14 battery listed at 3,200 mAh: two full-equivalent charges produce an estimate of 6,400 mAh. That is an example, not a universal trip recommendation or a measured backpacking result, and mAh alone does not account for voltage or charging losses. REI’s portable power bank guide also cautions that a 2,000 mAh bank will not fully recharge a 1,000 mAh device battery twice.
3. Compare energy in watt-hours, not just mAh
Watt-hours measure energy and are usually the clearer basis for comparing batteries with different voltages. If a device or battery lists only milliamp-hours and nominal voltage, convert it with:

Wh = (mAh ÷ 1,000) × nominal volts
Use the battery’s nominal voltage for this calculation, not simply the USB output voltage. When both the device battery and power bank have Wh ratings, compare those figures first, then account for energy lost in conversion and charging.

For example, Anker explains that a 20,000 mAh power bank at a nominal 3.7 V represents 74 Wh of stored cell energy. That is not the same as 74 Wh delivered to devices. The company uses an illustrative 82% bank-conversion efficiency and about 15% device-charging loss in its explanation; these are vendor assumptions, not guaranteed performance for every bank, cable, device, temperature, or charging condition. Use manufacturer guidance and your own prior use to choose a conservative margin rather than relying on a universal efficiency percentage. Anker’s power-bank capacity explanation describes the conversion example.

4. Size the power bank around the load and the route
Once you have a trip-load estimate in Wh, choose a source with enough usable energy for that load and a margin appropriate to your devices and conditions. Capacity is only one part of the choice:
- Mass: extra capacity adds weight, so a larger bank is not automatically better.
- Outputs and compatibility: check ports, connector types, and voltage compatibility for every device.
- Charging speed and replenishment: consider how quickly the bank can charge devices and how you could recharge the bank on the route.
- Weather and handling: make sure the setup suits expected exposure and how it will be carried.
- Mobility: a compact bank, larger bank, or bank paired with a panel suits different trips. REI advises considering likely device use, number of devices, time off-grid, and whether you will be mobile or stationary. REI’s power-bank buying advice discusses these trade-offs.
There is no reliable universal mAh capacity or per-day Wh allowance for backpackers: the right amount depends on your own device list, use, and recharge opportunities.

This makes it the perfect solar powered power bank for long-distance hiking, camping, backpacking, and home emergency preparedness kits.
5. Reduce avoidable drain without weakening your safety plan
Download maps before leaving, limit unnecessary screen use, and use airplane mode when appropriate. In areas with weak or absent coverage, a phone searching for service can drain power quickly. Great Smoky Mountains National Park describes cellular service as extremely limited and recommends airplane mode when relying on a phone. Great Smoky Mountains National Park’s backcountry guidance also advises matching supplies to outing duration and individual needs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPower budgeting does not replace independent safety equipment. The National Park Service’s Ten Essentials guidance includes navigation by map, compass, or GPS, and recommends an extra phone battery; its illumination guidance calls for a flashlight or headlamp and extra batteries. Yellowstone says backcountry cell service ranges from limited to nonexistent and warns against relying on phones for navigation or emergencies. Carry appropriate independent navigation and lighting, such as a paper map and compass and a dedicated headlamp with spare batteries. NPS Ten Essentials guidance and Yellowstone backcountry hiking guidance provide the relevant safety context.

Whether for daily use, travel, hurricane preparedness, or outdoor activities like camping, cycling, fishing, hiking, and kayaking, this portable power bank will be an essential part of your travel kit
6. Treat solar as a conditional supplement
A solar panel may help when your electronics use exceeds what you can carry in stored battery power, but its contribution depends on sunlight, weather, route, panel placement, and compatible regulated output. Do not budget a specific daily harvest unless you have trip-specific evidence for the setup and conditions. Check the manufacturer’s guidance before charging small devices directly; a compatible power bank may be a more practical way to store intermittent solar input. REI’s portable solar charger guidance discusses solar as a possible supplement and the importance of regulated USB output.
Quick Recap
A practical calculation to complete before leaving
- Write down each powered device and its battery Wh rating, or its mAh rating and nominal voltage.
- Estimate full-equivalent charges or operating energy for each device over the full time between recharges, based on your planned navigation, tracking, photography, messaging, and screen use.
- Convert mAh to Wh where needed using the device battery’s nominal voltage, then total the device estimates.
- Choose a power bank or other source by usable energy, mass, outputs, compatibility, recharge speed, and weather suitability; allow for conversion and charging losses.
- Decide what you will conserve and what will remain independent of the phone, especially navigation and lighting.
- Add solar only if the route and conditions support it, and treat its output as supplemental rather than guaranteed.
