Sony lists the original dimensions and mass in its 2020 PS5 launch specifications and the Slim measurements in its 2023 Slim announcement. These are manufacturer figures, not third-party measurements.

How much smaller and lighter is the Slim?
Disc-equipped models
The Slim disc model is about 32 mm shorter, 8 mm narrower and 44 mm shallower than the original disc model. Its listed mass is 1.3 kg lower: 3.2 kg instead of 4.5 kg. That makes it easier to accommodate in a tighter setup, though the console still needs suitable clearance for ventilation and access to its ports.

Digital models
The Slim Digital Edition is about 32 mm shorter, 12 mm narrower and 44 mm shallower than the original Digital Edition. Its listed mass drops by 1.3 kg, from 3.9 kg to 2.6 kg. Because the Slim Digital Edition is thinner than the Slim disc model, the two Slim configurations do not have identical dimensions.
Does the PS5 Slim have more storage?
Yes, by advertised capacity: Sony specified an 825 GB SSD for the original PS5 at launch and a 1 TB SSD for the Slim models in the 2023 announcement. The nominal increase is 175 GB.
Advertised capacity is not the same as free space for games. Sony says some storage is reserved for system administration, maintenance and options, so usable capacity is lower and can vary. Check the console’s storage settings for the space available on a specific unit.
What changes with the disc drive?
Original PS5
The original disc edition has an integrated Ultra HD Blu-ray drive. The original Digital Edition has no disc drive listed and is intended for games obtained digitally; the Slim detachable-drive accessory is not a way to add a drive to that original model.

PS5 Slim
The Slim is available in a drive-equipped configuration, and the Slim Digital Edition has a port for Sony’s detachable Ultra HD Blu-ray drive, which is sold separately. Sony’s Slim announcement describes this option. Before buying a drive, confirm that the console is a compatible Slim model and that the accessory listing matches it. Sony’s CFI-ZDD1 disc-drive manual lists PS5-format Ultra HD Blu-ray and compatible PS4-format Blu-ray discs, among other disc types.

If you own games on disc, the drive decision matters more than the chassis. Sony said in its 2020 PS5 FAQ that more than 99% of its 4,000+ PS4 games can also be played on either PS5 console. For a PS4 Blu-ray game, however, the Digital Edition requires a download; a drive-equipped PS5 can use the disc. Physical PS5 games likewise require a disc drive.
- Choose a drive-equipped PS5 if you want to use compatible game discs or prefer not to depend on downloads for those titles.
- Consider the Slim Digital Edition with its optional drive if you want a digital console initially but may need disc access later. Include the separate accessory in your decision and check model compatibility.
- Choose a digital-only setup if your games are acquired digitally and disc access is not important to you.
Does the Slim run games faster?
The cited Sony announcements establish differences in size, mass, advertised SSD capacity and disc-drive configuration; they do not establish that the Slim runs games faster than the original PS5. These form-factor changes alone are not evidence of a performance upgrade.
