To estimate carbon stored in a woodland’s living trees, define the area, divide it into reasonably consistent stands, inventory the trees, estimate their stem volume, convert that volume to whole-tree biomass, and then convert biomass to carbon using a stated method. Record the assessment date, boundaries, assumptions and uncertainty. A tree-only estimate is not the same as total woodland carbon, future carbon uptake or a carbon-credit calculation.
Estimate living tree carbon in six steps
The Forestry Commission’s Carbon Assessment Protocol sets out a five-stage assessment: define the area, stratify it, estimate stem volume, allocate biomass among tree parts, and convert biomass to carbon. The practical steps below add the reporting details needed to make an estimate interpretable.

- Define the boundary and question. Map the area and say whether you are estimating living tree biomass, all woodland carbon pools, or a project’s carbon change over a period. State the assessment date and area. Woodland Carbon Code baseline guidance also calls for a description of site condition and the carbon pools included (baseline guidance).
- Divide the woodland into stands. Separate areas that differ substantially in species, age or structure, or management. Estimating each reasonably consistent stand avoids masking meaningful differences with one woodland-wide average.
- Inventory the growing stock. Collect the tree data required by your chosen method to estimate stem volume by species or species group, and, where the method calls for it, by size class. The protocol describes this as a distinct assessment step; a general carbon-per-tree shortcut is not a substitute for a suitable inventory.
- Estimate whole-tree biomass. Apply the selected method to account for the tree components it covers, such as stems, branches, foliage, stumps and roots. Stem biomass alone is not whole-tree biomass.
- Convert biomass to carbon. Apply the carbon conversion specified by the method and report the units and calculation basis. Keep carbon mass distinct from carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e): converting carbon to CO₂e is an additional reporting transformation, so identify it explicitly.
- Document assumptions and uncertainty. Report the boundary, strata, species groups, inventory and measurement approach, equations or calculator version, included pools, assessment date and limitations. The sources cited here do not establish a universal uncertainty percentage, so do not present one as a standard.
Why species, age and management matter
A woodland’s species mix, stand age and structure, stocking, management history and growing conditions can change the estimate and any projection of future growth. Forest Research says UK forest growth models require information including species, age, initial spacing, management and yield class (growth-model information). This is why a single generic carbon value per tree is not a dependable estimate for a mixed woodland.

Treat these as general observations, not a quantified forecast for a particular site.

Tree carbon is only one part of woodland carbon
A living-tree estimate covers tree biomass, not necessarily the woodland’s total carbon stock. Woodland Carbon Code baseline guidance identifies additional pools: litter and deadwood, non-tree biomass above and below ground, and soil. Forest Research’s UK forest statistics show soil is a substantial part of the national forest stock (2025 statistics). Label the result as a tree estimate if those other pools have not been included.
National figures provide context, not a substitute for measuring a site. Forest Research estimated the UK’s total forest carbon stock at 4.1 billion tonnes of CO₂e in 2025, including 2.8 billion tonnes in soils and 0.9 billion tonnes in living woody biomass. The total was around 3.2 billion tonnes of CO₂e in 1990. These are UK-wide aggregates, not typical values per woodland or per hectare (Forest Research, 2025).

When a project carbon calculator is the right tool
A standing-stock estimate answers how much carbon is present in the trees at a given time. Project accounting instead assesses changes in carbon stocks over time and may include establishment and management emissions. The Woodland Carbon Code calculator is designed for that project-accounting purpose (Code guidance on carbon sequestration); it should not be treated as interchangeable with a simple estimate of current tree stock.

Official guidance identifies Carbon Calculation Spreadsheet version 2.4.1, dated April 2024; check the Code’s current materials before operational use, as versions can change. The Code is a standard for woodland creation projects, not a general label for an existing woodland’s stored carbon: the Forestry Commission says it does not cover existing woodlands or carbon stored in forest products (Forestry Commission guidance). Do not describe an existing-stand estimate as a Code credit or unit calculation without checking eligibility and current requirements.

What to include in a useful report
- Assessment date and mapped boundary, with area and units.
- Whether the result covers living trees only or additional carbon pools.
- Stand divisions and the species or species groups assessed.
- Inventory measurements, estimation method, equations or calculator version.
- Whether the result is carbon or CO₂e, and the units used.
- Key assumptions, limitations and uncertainty; do not imply greater precision than the data supports.
A diameter tape can help collect stem measurements during a field inventory, but it is only a measurement aid. The assessment protocol and the data collected—not the tape itself—determine how those measurements become a carbon estimate.
