To keep a Texas home cooler without running the air conditioner constantly, block sun before it reaches indoor spaces, limit heat produced inside, and open windows only when outdoor air is cooler and its quality is acceptable. Fans can make occupied rooms feel more comfortable, but they do not lower the room temperature. In hot, humid weather, these steps can reduce avoidable cooling demand, not guarantee a safe substitute for air conditioning.
Block sunlight before it heats the room
Close blinds or drapes on windows before direct morning or afternoon sun reaches them. Shading the glass from outside—using an awning, louvers, or solar screens—generally blocks more heat than an interior covering, because the sun is intercepted before it warms the window. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends exterior shading, and the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs lists solar screens among its weatherization measures.

If you are considering an upgrade, compare exterior and interior options by the window’s orientation and sun exposure, fit, compatibility with window operation and emergency egress, weather durability, installation needs, and cost. There is no established product-specific performance rating or guaranteed household savings figure for these measures.

Open windows only when conditions favor cooling
Use outdoor air for ventilation only when it is cooler than the air inside and local outdoor air quality is acceptable. Close windows again once the outside air becomes warmer. During hot, humid Texas weather, ventilation may do little to cool a home: the U.S. Department of Energy cautions that it is not an effective cooling strategy in hot, humid climates.
#1 Best Overall
- 3-in-1 Portable Air Conditioner: Enjoy cool air (64°F- 90°F) during hot summer days, plus dehumidifier and fan modes for comfortable air circulation when temperatures are milder. Everything you need for year-round comfort in one AC unit
- Comfort Sleep Mode: Sleep mode and programmable 1-24 hour timer maintain your ideal room temperature automatically. Ultra-quiet operation below 50dB won't interrupt sleep, while two adjustable fan speeds let you customize airflow
- Quick Window Installation: Comes ready to install with exhaust hose and adjustable window kit that fits widths from 20.48 to 39 inches. No handyman skills required—set up completely in just minutes and start cooling immediately(for small windows, trimming may be necessary)
- No-hassle Maintenance: Advanced Self-evaporating operation effectively reduces the frequency of manual water draining. The washable filter captures dust effectively and slides out easily for quick cleaning whenever needed—keeping air fresher longer
- Room-to-Room Versatility: Lightweight with smooth-rolling casters, this compact AC moves effortlessly wherever cooling is needed. Perfect for bedrooms, living rooms, garages—any space up to 750 square feet
That means opening windows at night is not automatically helpful. Check the actual outdoor temperature and air quality rather than relying on the time of day. If outdoor air is warmer or unsuitable, keep windows closed and rely on shading and other measures instead.
Use fans for comfort, not to cool an empty room
A fan moves air across the skin and helps sweat evaporate; it does not cool the room’s air. Use one in an occupied room if it helps you feel more comfortable, and switch it off when the room is empty.

The EPA advises against relying on a fan in a closed room and says fans will not prevent heat illness when room temperatures are in the mid-90s°F or higher. If indoor conditions reach that level, or anyone feels unwell, do not treat a fan as a replacement for air conditioning or a cooler location.

- Turn off lights that are not needed.
- Run large appliances in the morning or at night, rather than during the hottest part of the day.
- Replace HVAC filters monthly, as TDHCA recommends. The Texas Department of Insurance also advises checking filters, outdoor condenser coils, and drain lines.
These steps address avoidable indoor heat and equipment problems; they do not establish a particular reduction in AC runtime or a guaranteed energy-bill saving.

Follow a simple routine through the day
- Before direct sun reaches a room: close its blinds or drapes. Consider exterior shading for windows that repeatedly receive strong sun.
- During hotter hours: keep windows shut whenever outdoor air is hotter than indoor air. Limit unnecessary lighting and postpone large-appliance use.
- In the cooler morning or evening: open windows only if outside air is cooler and local air quality is acceptable. Close them when conditions change.
- While using a room: use a fan for personal comfort if needed, then turn it off when leaving.
- If the home becomes dangerously hot: stop prioritizing lower AC use and move to air conditioning or another cooled location.
When to prioritize air conditioning and safety
Passive measures are not a safe replacement for cooling in every Texas heat wave. The Texas Department of State Health Services identifies older adults, young children, people with chronic diseases, and people without air conditioning as groups at higher risk. If indoor heat is dangerous or someone is vulnerable, use an air-conditioned home or public cooling location.
Texas DSHS says people can call 2-1-1 and select option 1 to locate cooling centers; the Texas Division of Emergency Management also maintains a local center map. Confirm current local availability before traveling. Check on older friends, neighbors, and relatives. For heat-illness symptoms, DSHS advises moving to shade, drinking water slowly, and seeking medical attention if symptoms do not improve. Call 911 for heat-related illness, as the EPA directs.

If power fails, use shading and ventilate only when outdoor conditions are suitable. Never run a fuel-powered portable generator indoors, in a garage, or in another enclosed space; the EPA says to operate it outdoors at least 20 feet from buildings.

For longer-term improvements, TDHCA lists storm windows or window sealing, weather-stripping exterior doors, attic, wall, or floor insulation, HVAC filter replacement, and solar screens. Eligible households may be able to get assistance through the Weatherization Assistance Program. Use TDHCA’s Help for Texans page and select Weatherization, or call 2-1-1 to find referral options. Eligibility and provider availability depend on local circumstances.
The DOE says a combination of insulation, efficient windows and doors, shading, daylighting, and ventilation can reduce the need for air conditioning, while noting the limits of ventilation in hot, humid climates. Its HomeCooling101 infographic gives a broad estimate that high-efficiency air conditioners combined with other cooling-cost actions can reduce AC energy use by 20–50 percent. That is not a guaranteed result for any single behavior or Texas household.
